The dark alley swallows me whole and shuts me out from downtown nightlife just blocks away. I wrap my coat around myself a little tighter. Chilly autumn air finds a gap of skin between my stockings and the bottom of my coat. My long hair drapes over and warms my ears and cheeks, but my nose and red-tinted lips are numbed to the frostiness.

A spooky fog settles in the alley from businesses venting out the back. Other than curls of exhaust dancing in the narrow passage, I am alone. I pull my hair around my ear and check behind me again.
