    fingerspelling

Fingerspelling is a basic skill of American Sign Language (ASL). It is not appropriate to fingerspell every word during a conversation with another ASL signer. Imagine having a conversation with another person in which you voiced every letter of every word you wanted to say. It would not be efficient.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when using fingerspelling during a conversation.

Use fingerspelling for names, places, or words you do not know the sign for. This will help with clarity.

Do not move your hand all over when fingerspelling. Keep your hand in one place.

Form each letter clearly, especially when fingerspelling the letters e and o. Sloppiness on your part will make communication difficult.

Don’t mouth or voice the letters or block your face with your signing hand.

Don’t worry about how fast you can fingerspell. Clarity is more important
