Dr. Barroca, a professor of Spanish and Portuguese, taught at several colleges and universities in the United States and at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. For his doctoral thesis "Vida y Obra de D. Cristobal de Monroy y Silva", at the University of Sevilla, Spain, he made a thorough study of the life and literary work of Monroy. He published "Monroy, Uno de los Olvidados", in the Journal of Australian Universities Language and Literature Association, (AULLA), in 1973, a paper he presented at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. In 1976, his "Dos Comedias ineditas de Monroy" was published by Estudios de Hispanofila, University of North Carolina. Dr. Barroca retired in 1988. When not travelling with his wife or writing, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as visiting his relatives in Portugal.

Biografía
Don Cristóbal de Monroy y Silva nació en Alcalá de Guadaira y se bautizó el 24 de octubre de 1612 en la Iglesia de Santiago, según la información del Padre Leandro J. Flores, quien leyó la partida de bautismo del poeta antes de la destrucción de los documentos religiosos en esta comarca durante la guerra civil española.
Sus padres fueron don Bartolomé de Monroy, descendiente—según se cree—de la noble casa de los Monroy de Extremadura, y doña Maria Navarro de Silva. Don Cristóbal fue el hijo mayor del matrimonio, siguiéndole un hermano de nombre Bartolomé Rodríguez de Monroy, casado con doña Ana Perea y Parraja, natural del Arahal, y una hermana doña Sebastiana de Monroy.
Don Cristóbal vivió la mayor parte de su vida en Alcalá de Guadaire, donde sus padres tenían unas casas en la calle que lleva hoy su nombre, y las cuales habían comprado a don Pedro de Bercendona y su esposa doña Maldonado, junto a las moradas de otros distinguidos señores, las familias Sánchez Pinzón y los Quintanilla. Allí mismo, en Alcalá, habría aprendido sus primeras letras en uno de los conventos de la villa, cambiándose luego al Colegio Mayor de Santa María de Jesús, es decir, la antigua Universidad de Sevilla, donde se matriculó el 11 de agosto de 1629 para estudiar artes. Terminado el primer año universitario se fue a la Universidade de Salamanca en donde se matriculó el 13 de noviembre de 1630, en la facultad de Cánones. Por haber aprobado le vemos de nuevo matricularse en el tercer año, el 17 de noviembre de 1631, para el curso de 1631-32, en la misma facultad de Cánones. Este, posiblemente, sería su último año en Salamanca puesto que en los años siguientes ya no figura su nombre en los libros de matrículas de esta universidad.
En Salamanca escribió La Canción Real de la Vida de San Pablo, la cual ofreció a doña Juana María de la Concepción y Carmona, como reza en la dedicatoria a esta señora. Fue la obra impresa en Sevilla por Simón Fajardo, en 1633. El poema debiera haberse escrito por los años 1631-32.
Dudamos que terminara la licenciatura, puesto que nunca lo menciona. Tampoco sus amigos le tratan de licenciado. En 1635 muere don Bartolomé de Monroy, su padre, designando por albaceas en el testamento, entre otros, a doña María Navarro de Silva y a su hijo don Cristóbal de Monroy. El año siguiente, el 10 de diciembre de 1636, don Cristóbal trató casamiento con doña Ana Arias Salvador, con quien se casó en la parroquia de Santiago de Alcalá, el 12 de enero de 1637. La dote que recibió doña Ana fue de tres mil ducados. De este matrimonio nacieron varios hijos pero todos murieron de corta edad. El treinta de julio de 1649 sabemos, por el testamento de doña María Navarro, que don Cristóbal y su mujer tenían entonces una niña de nombre Ana Manuela, a quien la buena señora dejaba una colgadura de doceles sobremeca y colcha
, así como dos almohadas de terciopelo por el amor y voluntad
que le tenía. Ana Manuela se murió a los pocos días del fallecimiento de su abuela. Cuando se murió Monroy esta niña ya no vivía y, por su testamento, sabemos que su mujer se quedaba de nuevo embarazada.
Monroy fue bastante activo en la política de su villa. Según don Cayetano A. de la Barrera y Leirada, don Cristóbal fue nombrado regidor perpétuo
de la villa de Alcalá de Guadaire, aunque por ahora no podemos confirmar tal nombramiento. En primer lugar es raro que el padre Flores, el autor que mejores datos nos ha proporcionado de la biografía de Monroy, no indique esa regiduría. Es curioso, porque Flores ha utilizado documentos, como se ve, por ejemplo, en las fechas de muerte y testamento, y es sospechoso se le escapara un dato tan interesante como éste. Por otra parte, hemos consultado los libros capitulares del Ayuntamiento de Alcalá y no hemos encontrado su título de nombramiento de regidor. Téngase en cuenta que la noticia de la Barrera procede de una fuente literaria, de una silva a la muerte del doctor Juan Pérez de Montalbán, silva ésta que no hemos podido localizar.
