Ruth Moore
Born and raised in the Maine fishing village of Gotts Island, Ruth Moore (1903–1989) emerged as one of the most important Maine authors of the twentieth century, best known for her authentic portrayals of Maine people and her evocative descriptions of the state. She wrote thirteen novels throughout her lifetime, and was favorably compared to Faulkner, Steinbeck, Caldwell, and O’Connor. Moore and her partner, Eleanor Mayo, traveled extensively, but never again lived outside of Maine.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Very much enjoyed this book. I am a huge Elisabeth Ogilvie fan of Maine coastal fiction....but then i heard about Ruth Moore.....so i started gathering up her books...but they never quite got there....but this one did. I never wanted to put it down, and only did so because i had to...u know....life and all. But the ending was not at all what i expected....I'll not be a spoiler....but the book was full of hope...and i cheered hope on......but...... Oh, well, that is a bonus........ i finished it hours ago, and I am still thinking about the ending...wondering what they all did next......the island community life is just mesmerizing to me, and the history and character pitfalls of the Chin Island's residents was vivid, entertaining, believable (mostly), and admirable. Someday......I'd love to take a year and live on an island off the coast of Maine....and since I've read so many books...I think I'd be golden!!! Glad i read this!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It took me a very long time to read this book; not because of the writing but because I'm going through chemo and the concentration wasn't there. I put it aside because I knew it would be worth it when I was better.I loved this book. The hard scrabble life; the small village day to day goings on and the pettiness of people and the greatness of others. Miss Greenwood was such an inspiring character. Her love for life and nature was amazing. This book will hold a special place in my heart always.Thank you to Islandport Press and LibraryThing for a copy for my review.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The book is a story of life in a small community where everyone knows everyone else. It reminded me of where I grew up and where I wanted to get away form as fast as possible.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A re-released novel about a small island of the coast of Maine, and an interesting character study of its inhabitants. It's a simple quiet story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A nice read about life on an island off the coast of Maine. Yes, it's hard, yes, it's past it's prime, and yes, life is difficult for all. And that is exactly what the book is about. No intrigue. No Just daily life on an island and that is what makes this book special.Thank you to Librarything.com and Islandport Press for a copy of this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Delightful, well-written slice of life on a small island off the Maine Coast. Its slow pace gave an outstanding insight into the villagers' day-to-day lives. These people consist of several families who chose to stay on the island after its glory days came and went, plus a transplanted eccentric spinster lady and her mother--still considered after many years "summer people." At a Christmas program cum potluck supper, animosities begin to fester. They are fanned into the flames of outright hostility and polarization between heretofore friends and family members. Eldridge Gilman, who stays above the row tries to bring the factions together peacefully without success. Will a tragedy heal the rift? The author also wrote marvelous descriptions of both the weather and of nature through the seasons.
