I used Power Spanish 1 and got a lot out of the program. I then bought Power Spanish 2 looking for more of the same and got more than I expected. I really like the native expressions and have tried them out on several trips to Latin America with great success.

Language Learning Is Simple for Those Who Follow These 7 Easy Steps

Step 1: Capitalize on Cognates.

If you really want to learn how to speak languages quickly, you’ve got to capitalize on cognates. A cognate is simply a foreign language word that sounds like the English word. Here’s an example of a cognate in Spanish: to order – ordenar

See. It looks and sounds somewhat like English. Ordenar = To order. And here are a few more examples of cognates.

The English word interesting would be interesante in Spanish - interesante in Italian - intéressant in French - interesante in Portuguese. Even the word telephone in Italian, sounds like English and is a true cognate: telefono in Italian. And German is one of my favorites for cognates: coffee – Kaffee / beer – Bier / water – Wasser.

See. When you use cognates you already know a lot of foreign language words, don’t you?

Step 2: Make and Correct Lots of Mistakes. In Language Learning, Mistakes Are Good.

You’re like a child learning to walk when you begin learning a new language. Don’t stop the first time you stumble, or you’ll never even get to Kindergarten. Learn to view each failure as a stepping-stone to eventual fluency in your new language. The more you make and correct mistakes, the faster you learn!

Step 3: Remember While You Learn.

In foreigh language learning, nothing is more important than remembering while you learn. If you can’t remember it, you can’t use it. Step 6: Learn to Create Simple Original Sentences.

To begin this process, learn how to say I want in the language of your choice. Every three-year-old in the world knows how to say I want in his or her own language. So let’s learn that first: I want in Spanish: Quiero. I want in French: Je veux. I want in Italian: Voglio. I want in Portuguese: Quero. I want in Mandarin Chinese: Wǒ xiǎng. I want in German: Ich möchte.

Then learn how to say a few verb infinitives. Remember, all infinitives in English begin with to. For example, to walk, to talk, to eat, and to order are all English infinitives. They personalize the fast and easy sentences that you can learn how to create.

Learn to say (in the language of your choice) I want and then simply add an infinitive: to order in Spanish: ordenar, to order in French: commander, to order in German: bestellen, to speak in Mandarin Chinese: shuō, to go in Portuguese: ir.

To make an original sentence, simply put the two together: I want to order in Spanish: Quiero ordenar. I want to order in French: Je veux commander. I want to order in German: Ich möchte bestellen. I want to speak in Mandarin Chinese: Wǒ xiǎng shuō. I want to go in Portuguese: Quero ir. I want to pay in Italian: Voglio pagare.

Step 7: Build Upon Your Simple Sentences with High-Frequency Vocabularly and Enhancers

High frequency means used more often. Here’s an example: The English word now is used much more than the English word straightaway. Now is thus a more valuable high-frequency word because it is used all the time in regular speech by native speakers of English.

By simply adding a few common high-frequency enhancers, you can quickly and easily make your comunicative ability in any language explode higher and higher. Here are a few examples of high-frequency enhancers in Spanish: please: por favor – something: algo – now: ahora.

Now let’s create an original sentence in Spanish. First, select a modal verb: I want: Quiero. Next, select an infinitive to make your simple sentence original: To order: Ordenar. Then simply put the two together, and you have your original sentence in Spanish: I want to order: Quiero ordenar.

To make this sentence even more interesting, add something: I want to order something: Quiero ordenar algo. To make it even stronger, add the word now: I want to order something now: Quiero ordenar algo ahora. Then add a little politeness by saying please: I want to order something now please: Quiero ordenar algo ahora por favor.

Prologue

It is 8 a.m. in a middle school safely nestled in a small town in the Midwest. A young 13-year-old teenager is desperately trying to take a French class when he is told by his counselor that he can’t because his algebra scores are too low.

Frustrated and disappointed, he waits another year and finally gets into a French class only to discover that his French teacher doesn’t even speak fluent French. What’s more, she’s teaching French using grammar, and this kid doesn’t even know grammar in English, much less in French.

He loves the language tapes with the real French speakers, but somehow the worn-out method that they’re using just isn’t giving him results, and the grammar along with the conjugation of verbs is killing his grade. He gets a D in French at the end of the year.

That summer, he goes to Europe with the Explorer Scouts and discovers real French students in a youth hostel. No one in his group, not even the A students can speak to them, so he goes forward with his one year of D level French and begins to speak with the popular guitar-playing leader of the French group, in French.

Amazingly, he is understood, and the boy with the D suddenly realizes that everyone had been wrong. His Algebra scores had nothing to do with speaking French. Grammar had nothing to do with his ability to communicate in another language.

All the people who had controlled his language learning up to this point had hidden an amazing truth from him that he just discovered: Language learning is a natural human ability, common to all people, exclusive to none.

Armed with this great truth, the boy goes back to school and later majors in foreign languages in college, becoming fluent in seven of them, including French. As a graduate teaching assistant he is even rated as an excellent instructor by his French students at the University of Illinois.

He goes on to write and widely publish language books and record language programs that are so successful that he ends up selling his entire language program system to Macmillan Audio of New York and even works as their language consultant for several years in Midtown Manhattan.
