Floyd Willmore

The author was born in Pocatello Idaho in 1934. He grew up in a farming community near Rexburg where he began a lifetime of thinking about God and God's ways. After high school he served three years in the army then studied physics and mathematics. His working life was spent teaching mathematics and he is now retired. Inspirations to write this story began when he was five years old attending Sunday school with his mother. Those inspirations matured and accumulated for another sixty years. His study of mathematical foundations introduced some ideas that motivated him to think about the logic used to understand religion. His selection of a dialogue style for the literary vehicle is intended to make the reading easy and entertaining. He now spends his days seeking the meaning of life and he prays every night to a God he knows nothing about.

This story analyzes the use of faith as part of the thinking process used by mankind to collect information about eschatology. Eschatology is the name of the subject given to the study of death, resurrection, judgment, immortality and the doctrines thereof. Eschatology is a topic of concern by every religion and each religion is defined and determined by its eschatology. The existence of an afterlife and the form it takes is a question with many answers! That is what this story is about!

Man has vexed and waxed for centuries about his origin and his destiny and has generated a large diversity of religions to explain his purpose on the planet earth. Over the centuries; religions have come and gone and have developed splits that generate more religions. The number of religions is ever increasing even though it is logical the number should decrease! The longer man studies eschatology the less he knows!

One might expect organizations that study eschatology and use it to guide them through life would work together in search of information but they seldom make any such attempt! Instead; each religion clings to the notion that its particular information is more sanctioned by Deity than that of the others. It is rare for religions to merge or combine their knowledge. It is far more likely they will split into different faiths with each having a distinct understanding of their accumulated information! Their accumulation of knowledge is an unnatural diverging process! The large number of religious beliefs causes one to wonder why there are so many!

Man also searches for information using science. When the scientific community investigates a topic and members of the community are not in agreement they embrace the notion that they are brothers in search of truth. The tendency is to find common understanding! Different researchers may at times disagree but they use logic and science to work together and eventually find common understanding. Their accumulation of knowledge is a converging process!

People not familiar with a given religion may find its beliefs bizarre and farfetched yet readily accept beliefs they have known from childhood that are equally farfetched. Religious organizations accumulate information then use faith to extend their knowledge beyond that found by using logic and common sense. They use the power of faith!

The most natural urge for living things do is to stay alive. Most living things do not think about staying alive but simply try to do it! Humans know that nothing lives forever so it is natural for them to look and think beyond mortality and search for the hereafter. That search has developed many ideas that describe existence beyond death. The ideas generated by religion concerning the afterlife make a long list that includes resurrection and reincarnation. The existence of an immortal soul in some form is common and comes in a variety of incarnations.

Horses are living things and it is natural for them to cling to life. If humans have an immortal soul then it is reasonable that horses also have one! This story is about two horses from the planet Kolob that come to earth to learn about immortality and the afterlife. They ask for guidance from an eleven year old boy who agrees to help them. They are soon joined by three more beings from of Kolob and the six of them search to learn about God and the afterlife. Together they explore eschatology by looking at religions from various times and places.

The story is told by using philosophical dialogue and magical realism. It is told through the conversations of the six characters along with voices from scripture, philosophy, history, and science as they undertake a rambling study of eschatology, metaphysics, history and science. They eventually come to some conclusion about the meaning of life!

Such questions and speculations have been explored by more serious writers but this inquiry is unique in its attempt to address the concerns by beings other than humans and to include faith as an extension of the logic processes!

The dialogues are playful and sometimes irreverent. They are intended to liven up the message! The boy in this story acquires the ability to make scholarly statements about religion and history beyond what might be expected from a young boy! His statements are taken from sources the author considers reliable! There are no footnotes since the story is not intended to be a research paper but simply a story. The story rambles because strangers in a foreign land never know what to expect next!

Chapter One

THE APPEARANCE OF TWO FLYING HORSES STARTLES THE BOY NAMED JODEL! HE IS ABSOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED WHEN THE HORSES TALK!

Dyolf: Hello! My name is Dyolf and I am from Kolob! I am here with my brother to learn about immortality and the afterlife!

Yar: We want to know how to be immortal and live forever! Do people here know about such things?

Jodel: Some say they do! Many things have been written and talked about regarding the afterlife! What is Kolob?

Yar: Kolob is the center of the universe!

Dyolf: Kolob has no beginning and no end! One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth.

Jodel: How many people live in Kolob?

Yar: There are no people!

Dyolf: Kolob is populated by horses, mules and donkeys. Mostly mules!

Yar: And one unicorn. Her name is Redael!

Jodel: Kolob sounds interesting. Tell me more about Kolob!

Yar: The mules are Terrestrial and do all of the work although there is little work to be done. They are nice but boring!

Dyolf: They spend most of their time studying mathematics! They have wings and can fly but seldom do so. They are brown.

Jodel: What about the donkeys?

Dyolf: The donkeys are the bosses and they are Celestial. They have short wings and never fly. They say they can fly but I have never seen one do it! They have great virtue. They sing and pray and are colored white.

Yar: They say they are pure white but they actually have a bit of black!

Jodel: That is the nature of bosses everywhere! What about the horses?

Dyolf: We horses are Telestial. We are fun loving, enthusiastic and athletic, but not very smart! We have long powerful wings and can fly to anywhere!

Yar: We are colored black.

Jodel: Who can fly and run the fastest?

Dyolf: Yar is the fastest runner!

Yar: Redael has four powerful wings and she can fly the fastest!

Dyolf: She is very nice! She is Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial all at the same time and she knows everything. Everyone likes Redael.

Jodel: I have never seen a unicorn! What does she look like?

Dyolf: Her front wings are white, her back wings are black and the rest of her is brown!

Yar: Except her horn. It is a twist of black and white. She is very beautiful!

Jodel: Why have you come here? Don’t they know about immortality in Kolob?

Yar: The donkeys say
