Introduction
Emotional intelligence is a different view of the human psyche. It takes all we know about our thought process and emotional state and changes them. People always believed that the thought process or rational thinking trumps emotions and the thought process is not affected by emotions. The erroneous thinking believes that rational thinking is always in charge and if we show emotions, it is because we allow it.
When an emotion strikes, especially a strong one, it takes over our senses and prevents us from rational thought until it has passed. Emotions show up physically, bypassing our rational thinking process altogether. It is only when we are calm that rational thinking returns. This is why it is important never to make a vital decision in the midst of an emotional moment. The reaction to emotions or our response to them keeps us from thinking rational at times. We may think it is appropriate to suppress the emotions to allow us to think clearer, but emotions are not supposed to be suppressed. Suppressed emotions lead to health issues caused by stress from holding the emotion and keeping it from a true release. If an emotion appears, it needs releasing. The key is to release these emotions with a cool head, having a response and reaction that keeps us from losing control.
The concept and theory of emotional intelligence is relatively new. It was not until the mid 1980's that the term was ever heard and the theory studied in greater detail. Unfortunately, most of those in charge of educating our children still overlook emotional intelligence. School systems do not teach or train about it, when in fact it is a vital part of who we are. If all academic institutions and organizations realized the vital link between successful leadership and a high emotional intelligence, they would promote developing it as they now promote raising the IQ. They would plainly see that people with high emotional intelligence are more often than not very successful in all aspects of their lives, including their careers and relationships.
Many believe we can do nothing about our emotional outbursts. The thought is we just have to weather then and then move on; however, the truth is while we cannot control the actual emotion we can control our reaction to them. They do not realize that there is indeed a way to manage the emotions and control our reactions. Society today focuses in on people's emotional ills, such as depression and anger and offers prescription medications to mask the pain
instead of teaching a way to release, let go and choose a better response.
This book talks about emotional intelligence, giving a clear definition of it along with a detailed view of each level and element of it. Full detail of the four branches that makes up the emotional intelligence are given. Chapters detail the development of the ability to release negative emotions and on how to develop a higher emotional intelligence. It is the hopes of those who fully believe in the power of emotional intelligence that people will be learn how to live richer and fuller lives with this knowledge.
