Chapter One – Inescapable Foreboding
Tuesday June 21, 2005
Just as Cassandra Foreshadow woke from a pleasant dream she was whisked off to another time and place. She was watching from above as a scene played out before her. A spell was invoked:
Blast the obstruction.
To its destruction.
So I can progress
without distress.
The door to her home at Number 10 Witch Hemlock Court was torn off its hinges and cast aside. It was nighttime and she saw her Aunt, Helen Roberts, downstairs in Number 10, standing by herself in the dimly lit entry hall. Cassandra was certain that no one else was in the house. Through the front door 4 spotted hyenas and a gigantic growling grizzly bear trotted into her house followed by two extremely powerful and hostile witches. Minerva Foretelli Rival, a Level 10 Seer and her sister Missy Rival, a Level 8 Seer were determined to steal an old wooden chest. The magical animals served Minerva and were growling and menacing Aunt Helen. The scene paused; all characters frozen in place. Cassandra knew that the outcome was in doubt and could be altered, and it must be changed because Cassandra knew her Aunt Helen was in extreme danger and unless Cassandra acted quickly and changed her short term tactics and her long term strategy, Aunt Helen would not survive the encounter. Being a Level 10 Seer herself, Cassandra also knew that another scene occurred first and would directly result in this deadly confrontation.
Again, she was transported to another time and place where she was watching from above a room of one hundred men and women, with Max Solution and herself sitting together. Everyone was facing an elevated stage where a lady was speaking, The next item up for bid is on page 34 of your auction program. One extremely weathered wooden chest circa 1700. Do I hear $3,000?
$3,000,
a young woman in the front row shouted as she held up a small sign with the number 23 printed on it.
Cassandra concentrated on the woman bidder and the scene stopped, frozen for 5 seconds. She knew this chest was the most valuable item up for auction today and she must buy it, and even more importantly, keep it out of the reach of the woman in the front row. She knew that woman auction participant number 23 was an experienced level eight seer and a formidable opponent and none other than Missy Rival.
Do I hear $4,000?
the lady auctioneer spoke into the microphone.
Cassandra saw herself raise her sign with the number 10.
Do I hear $5,000? Please let me remind everyone that only cash will be accepted, and all sales are final and must be settled immediately.
$5,000,
the young woman in the front row said even louder this time as she looked back to see who was bidding against her. The crowd whispered to each other, surprised this beat up chest would garner such interest.
$45,000,
the sitting Cassandra auction bidder said loudly, drawing oohs and aahs from the auction attendees and a hostile glare from woman bidder number 23.
Excellent, do I hear $46,000?
the lady auctioneer said smiling, happy there was interest even in this lowly weathered chest. She hesitated as she looked to lady number 23 for her response and then she continued, going once… going twice… sold to gentle lady number 10 for $45,000,
as she banged her gavel down emphatically. The auction crowd clapped, and a few whistles were heard.
Immediately, the scene ended, and Cassandra sat up in bed knowing exactly what she had to do. She had today to prepare. She knew that Missy Rival a.k.a. lady bidder number 23 would bring only $44,000 in cash while Cassandra would bring more than enough money and magical muscle to buy and keep the hidden prize that both women wanted so badly. Cassandra knew this confrontation and her exposure to such a dangerous risk was necessary and unavoidable if her family was to
