    Dedication

To the Magical Child in all of us.

The hills of the enchanted isle are green, white foam rings it round, and if you are near enough you may see the tossing arms and golden hair of the Mermaids by the water’s edge washing their glittering jewels, and hear the singing birds, and smell the fragrant scent of flowers. But as the first rays of the sun rest upon its highest hills, it sinks into the deep, deep sea.

    CHAPTER 1

    CAILIN MCALLISTER

    C:\Users\starg_000\Downloads\wave-1641793_1920.jpg

The young Druid boy, Cailin McAllister, looked out on the choppy waters of the Irish Sea, whose surface was lifted into jagged peaks by the cold winds that swept down from the icy climes to the north. He lived on the Isle of Man, a green and pleasant land, rich in magical history. Cailin was 12 years old and afraid of nothing.

A gangly boy he was; his arms and legs looked a bit too long for his skinny body, but he would grow into himself in a few more years. He had a shock of blonde hair and wide eyes that were made of golden amber, speckled with a touch of moss green.

Sitting down on the gritty sand, still damp from the retreating tide, the kingdoms of air and sea stretched far out before him, reaching to the distant horizon. He liked to wake up early and come down to the seaside at dawn, for that was the only time when all things looked brand new, and smelled brand new, and the world was given another chance to make things right.

A searching tentacle of golden light softly emerged from his curious mind and carefully traced the rugged outcrops of rocky cliffs, while another one plunged fearlessly into the wild water, probing the inky and mysterious depths. But when a blast of chill air suddenly forced his attention back to his body, he diverted his gaze towards the earthy tangle of gnarly branches behind him, and to the many small walking trails that meandered away from them, reaching back towards the woodlands of the Glen.

The brisk sea air seemed to pass unhindered through his head, clearing out the cobwebs and making space for an onrushing tide of fresh new dreams and ideas. He imagined that he was a relative of Merlin the Magician, legendary Wizard of Druid history, and envisioned himself as being just as inscrutable and wise as that venerable figure.

Cailin secretly believed that he also held mystical secrets in the centre of his heart and a magical energy in the palms of his hands and that one day he would share them eagerly with the rest of the world.

The Isle of Man, the sea-bound kingdom where he lived, had always been shrouded in enchantment and mystery. It had a long history of conquests, kings, and ancient peoples, and many Celtic legends had been imprinted into the landscape by the heroic figures; their feats of magic were enacted upon the very vistas he now gazed upon, in silence and in awe.

Miracles seemed possible in this place, especially at dawn, when the ancient magic still hovered in the air above him. It whispered to him that anything was possible… anything!

At only thirty miles long the island was small, but it had been blessed with a larger-than-life character. It seemed to have been somehow captured in time; a mystical land where terrifying sea monsters still lurched out of the briny deep and where heroes of legend still rose up bravely, sword in hand, to battle with them.

Cailin was a child of earth, sea and sky but he was also kin to another strange kind of magic that had crept invisibly into his blood and began to twirl endless spirals inside his flesh. His Druid heritage was a strong influence on the boy and never too far from his thoughts, and his blood hosted a mixture of Irish, Welsh and Scottish inclinations.

Garwick Beach, where he sat, was as quaint and as picturesque as a postcard. It lived up to its name, which means ‘pleasant bay’ in
