Raffles fluisterde deze woorden bijna zonder de lippen te bewegen, terwijl hij, als een echte man van de wereld, in zijn leunstoel achterover lag.
Dit gesprek had plaats in de eetzaal van het Hotel „Sint Petersburg", het voornaamste van de stad Irkoetsk.
Voorname kalmte heerschte in de groote zaal, waar een zwaar, Oostersch tapijt elken voetstap dempte en de kellners zich geluidloos bewogen.
Onder de elegante verschijningen die zaten aan zwaar met kristal en zilver beladen tafeltjes, bevond zich ook John C. Raffles.
Schijnbaar in gedachten verdiept, luisterde hij toch zeer nauwkeurig naar het gesprek aan het naburige tafeltje.
Een tweetal heeren zaten daar druk te redeneeren.
De een droeg de rijk versierde uniform van een Russisch generaal, de ander was in smoking.
Het gesprek werd op gedempten toon gevoerd en scheen voor geen vreemde ooren bestemd.
Charly Brand, de vriend, of, zooals hij genoemd werd, de secretaris van den lord, had zich schijnbaar geheel verdiept in de „Nowoje Wremja", doch in werkelijkheid luisterde hij echter ook naar zijn buren.
Hij verstond evenwel geen woord van het gesprokene.
Verscholen keek hij dan weer naar het gelaat van Raffles, dat ijzig kalm was en wiens oogen onverschillig rondkeken.
Maar Charly kende het gebarenspel van zijn vriend veel te goed om niet terstond op te merken, dat aan het naburige tafeltje een gesprek werd gevoerd, dat Raffles niet alleen levendig interesseerde, maar dat hem ook toornig maakte. [2]
De beide heeren staakten thans hun gesprek en verlieten de eetzaal.
Nauwelijks was dit geschied of Raffles riep den kellner.
Deze verscheen terstond.
„Wie zijn die beide heeren, die zoo juist de zaal verlieten?"
„Zijne Excellentie de gouverneur van Irkoetsk Ortschkoff en graaf Barjatinsk, zijn districtschef."
„Waar logeeren ze?"
„Kamer 38 en 39 op de eerste etage!"
„Dank je!"
De kellner ging.
Charly Brand kon zijn nieuwsgierigheid niet langer bedwingen.
„Edward, zei hij, „wat ben je van plan?
Hij beefde van opwinding, want het koude, sfinx-achtige gelaat van zijn vriend, dat als uit marmer gehouwen was, vertelde hem maar al te duidelijk, dat Raffles weer iets buitengewoons in het schild voerde.
Hij begreep, dat zijn vriend het gesprek van de heeren had gehoord
Maar lord Lister was er de man niet naar om met zijn geheimen te koop te loopen, zelfs niet tegenover zijn vriend Brand, die, zooals Raffles zei, „zoo schrikkelijk nerveus was."
„Edward, ik smeek je! Vertel mij toch, wat er gebeurt! Ik beef voor je leven!"
Lister lachte.
„Poeh! Jij beeft altijd, Charly. Dat moet je afleeren. Je verandert mij toch niet!"
„En waarom niet, Edward? Dat is geen leven om altijd vol angst en zorg te zitten. Staak die gevaarlijke ondernemingen toch! Ik ben er van overtuigd, dat je hersens weer de een of andere dolle streek hebben uitgebroed!"
„En als dat nu eens zoo was?"
„Dan zou ik je willen verzoeken om die dolle plannen te laten varen in je eigen belang, of—"
„Of?"
„Of ik moet je verlaten!"
„Je bent een groot kind, Charly!"
Raffles stak een sigaret op.
„Neen, Edward, ik ben geen kind! Integendeel! Ik zie verder dan jij! Jou zullen je streken
