About this ebook

Follow the life of Sakamo Ryu on Earth, where he is Sakamo Ryu, a fifteen-year-old boy with an ascendency of English-Japanese.
His other life is as Alex Brim, a Hero for Hire in the Magical World Azurath where he can travel by using a magical pendant.
His help is needed from time to time because of the Magical Voids that appear in the sky from where Monsters fall, making the lives of the different species that live there a very hard one.
...

Surprising everyone, Alex shouted to the Orc, “Eat him already! He is in my way! I want your head and that pretty Magical Orb you have inside you! You are not dead already because that dumbass is still there, but as soon as you kill him, you are all mine!“

The Orc let his hostage go, letting him fell to the ground with a muffled bump. He then raised his mace to the sky and screamed, giving the signal for the Goblins to attack.

At the same time, Alex whispered, “Give me a little of your strength, Shinatobe.”

A small dot of light near his right ear answered in a low voice, “As you say, Master.”

    Chapter 1 – Quest in Azurath 1

Alex Brim was finishing his lunch, together with his Party for that Quest. Gabriel Dawson got up after finishing his meal and said, Before anything else, I need to pee. I will be right back to help with tidying the campsite.

The Fairy Wenammy spoke while disguising a smile and trying to remain serious, If you get in trouble, try not to scream like a little girl. It’s kind of embarrassing hearing such a big man scream like that.

Gabriel grunted. I didn’t scream like a little girl when those Goblins attacked us in the morning. I made out a very virile scream because of surprise!

He went to the nearest bunch of trees as fast as he could while the others were laughing their hearts out.

Alex Brim munched on another piece of bread while glancing around to their partners, that hired him to help them in getting rid of a group of Goblins that terrorized that region of the ‘Kingdom of Bouria’.

Their Leader, James Macdonald, a Human Mage that paired up with Bethany Matthews, a powerful Mage woman. He was strong with Water Spells, but she was dangerous with Fire and Wind Spells. When she combined some of them against the Goblins she faced in the morning, those ugly things did not stand a chance.

Pearl Pearson, an Elf woman with incredibly beautiful golden skin and green hair that acted as an archer together with another woman, Anika Wright, a Mermaid archer with white skin and blue hair that could use a lot of Water Spells.

The Fairy Wenammy acted as a close combat fighter and used her Wind Spells to increase her speed and strength more perfectly and powerfully than the screaming Human, Gabriel Dawson, a man that also used Wind Spells in his close combat fighting.

James Macdonald noticed Alex’s gaze and asked, What is in your mind, Mister Rented-Hero? You seem worried about something. You are looking at all of us very suspiciously. I do hope you are not thinking about doing something stupid, like robbing us, for instance.

Alex took a sip of his tea and answered to the puzzled looks upon him, You are mistaken if you think I would ruin my reputation by robbing you guys of the handful of tiny Orbs we took from those Goblins. My contract was very clear, five gold coins and one Orb of my choosing. Nothing more, nothing less. I was just thinking that I did not choose my Orb and strangely, those Goblins this morning did not have a leader, as they normally have. Besides, you should be more worried about your partner, Mister Gabriel Dawson. Unless he has some problem with his bladder, he is taking too long for a mere piss. Unless he was lying, and he has a… smelly problem.

Before James Macdonald could say anything more, a girlish squeal filled the air for a brief moment, going silent immediately. Alex got up and kicked the edge of his shield that was on the ground next to him that went up and, after a couple of turns, his left hand grabbed the strap while his right hand took the sword. He then turned to the group of trees to where James Macdonald went minutes ago and saw the foliage of the nearby bushes shaking strongly. The others grabbed their weapons as well and saw in horror a group of twenty Goblins emerging from the bushes, followed by a huge Four-Armed Orc that was carrying a big wooden mace and dragging by his right foot the fainted Gabriel Dawson.

Everyone stood still for a moment until the big Orc slowly raised Gabriel while looking at Alex. He pointed the mace at him, and then at the members of his Party, one by one.

Alex squeezed the hilt of his sword and said, There’s my Orb. You guys take care of his friends, the big one is all mine.

Alex then shouted to the Orc, surprising everyone, Eat him already! He is in my way! I want your head and the pretty Magical Orb you have inside you! You are not dead already because that dumbass is still there, but as soon as you kill him, you are all mine!

The Orc let go of Gabriel’s foot, and he fell on the ground with a muffled bump. The Orc raised his mace to the sky and screamed, giving the signal for the Goblins to attack. At the same time, Alex whispered, Give me a little of your strength, Shinatobe.

A small dot of light near his right ear answered in a low voice, As you say, Master.

Alex became surrounded by an almost imperceptible light glow, and from his belt, he took daggers after daggers that he threw in quick succession, aimed at the Orc’s legs and arms, making him scream in pain and losing the mace.

That was the signal for the group of archers and Mages that began shooting arrows to the farthest Goblins while the Fairy Wenammy joined Alex on his run forward, landing a punch on a Goblin and a kick on another, opening a path for Alex that went straight to the Orc.

An endless rush of slashes cut off the Orc’s arms, one after the other, while Alex used his shield to fend off the powerful punches the Orc tried to land on him, and a powerful kick to the Orc’s groins made him bend over.

Alex approached the Orc and looked into his eyes, This is payment for all the Farmers and villagers you and your group killed.

A side slash took the Orc’s head, which rolled on the floor. The Goblins that were still alive looked back, staring in surprise at the head of their powerful Leader, making them forget the fight and being killed easily by the others.

Alex stuck his sword in the Orc’s chest, a few centimetres below his heart and used the sword as a lever, to take out the Magical Orb that was, as usual, attached to the heart like if it was some weird extra organ that granted Magic to some Magical Monsters and that was probably the reason for the extra pair of arms.

Alex grabbed the Orb and cleaned it on the Orc’s loincloth. He took a quick look back to see if the others needed his help, and after checking that they were also removing the Orbs from the Goblins, he approached Gabriel Dawson and checked his wounds. A bump on his head was probably the reason he got knocked out, because there were no more wounds or blood.

After a few slaps, Gabriel woke up and looked around, a little confused. I… didn’t have time to react. When I saw one of them, I felt a pain in my head and everything went dark. They used me as a hostage, right?

The big guy tried, but I told him I didn’t care less if he killed you or not. He got confused and angry, and he let you go, becoming an easy target for me. Can you get up? I want to take his arms and legs with us. We can sell his meat in the City.

Gabriel grabbed the helping hand and wondered how that boy could lift him so effortlessly. He then asked, while picking up two arms, What about the rest of his body? We will leave it like this?

Why not? The wolves and the crows deserve to eat as well. They liked to eat people, let them become food as well. Unless you want some pork chops, and if that’s the case, you don’t need my help for that, right? I already did a lot, by saving someone that screams like you! Man, you really need to do something about your scream. It doesn’t go well with your enormous size and beard!

Gabriel made an awkward smile and asked, trying to change the subject, Did you really kill him all alone? This guy was huge. I don’t know if I could defeat him, less alone kill him!

That’s why I am worth every gold coin. I could even kill all his friends before going to the Orc, but I don’t like to embarrass my employers. Besides, they also need to get some Magical Orbs to pay for expenses till their next Quest, right?

Like if you don’t need them! You also have expenses, right?

Alex shrugged. I guess, but the gold coins I am getting help me while I wait for my next contract. Besides, I don’t have so many expenses as you may think, and I don’t have an addiction that makes me waste money, like drinking or women.

What about… your family? They could use…

Alex raised his right palm to shut him up. Remember the clauses of my contract, Mister Gabriel. Personal inquiries are not needed. Now, more work and less talk, or we will not continue our voyage before nightfall! Man, I really need a bath, right now!

Gabriel nodded and held the Orc’s arm that Alex was giving him, wondering how the heck he was able to cut those arms and legs large as logs so easily, and carry them like if they were nothing, while he was having difficulties walking just with three Orc arms.

When they finished and were tying the meat on the mules’ backs, Bethany Matthews and Anika Wright approached and Bethany asked, You want to join us, Alex? We all need a bath right now, but in your case, it’s more urgent. You are all red, and you will be horribly smelly in a few minutes.

Alex smiled, and Anika untied the first knot in his shirt. Let me help you. It will be faster if you get rid of these clothes. I can wash them aside very quickly.

Alex gently removed her hands from his chest and said with a slight smile, Don’t seduce me so shamelessly like that, you beautiful Mermaid. At least pay me a drink before taking out my clothes! I just need a quick bath from one of your beautiful Water Spells and a fast dry with some Fire and Wind Spells with Miss Bethany’s help.

Anika Wright made a kinky smile and caressed Alex’s left cheek. You don’t need to be so shy near me. Life is too short for you Humans to be attached so strongly to your morals and shyness.

Alex grabbed her hand and kissed her fingers gently. I am not shy, beautiful Mermaid, I am just afraid of falling in love with you when we just met a few days ago. I know little about you, and you know nothing about me.

That only made Anika approach even more, stopping only at a few millimetres from his lips. And whose fault is that, Mister secretive? You puzzle me, and I am not easily puzzled. That makes you even more appealing to my eyes. But I won’t push myself on you. This is enough for now. We will have more opportunities in the future, and maybe on our next encounter, you will be more willing to accept my kind offer to share a bed with me.

Anika was pulled away by a Fairy that was rolling up her eyes. Wenammy poked the Mermaid’s cleavage and spoke, Stop pushing your big tits against him, you horny Mermaid! Let the man breathe, will you?

Anika poked Wenammy’s flat chest and answered, Jealousy is such an ugly sin, you flat board!

What did you call me, you cow? You need to be milked or what?

Anika tilted her head sideways and asked, You are strangely protective. Are you in love with me? Or with him?

Wenammy turned bright red and stuttered, N-no… I am n-not… in love with… h-him… n-no way! Or you! Take care of the Water, you annoying fish!

Anika shrugged. That’s a pity. I think you are rather pretty. I wouldn’t mind sharing a bed with him and you.

Alex choked, and Wenammy froze. Anika raised both arms and mumbled her Spell. An enormous ball of Water formed at three meters high, and when she winked at Alex, the ball fell, washing them all by enveloping them and twirling, taking the blood from their bodies and clothes. The ball dispersed on the ground, and Bethany Matthews coughed. Cough! Cough! At least give a warning before doing that! I thought I was going to drown!

Anika looked back with a predatory expression, and her answer made Bethany shiver. I always like to drown my victims before eating them. Why would I warn my food?

James Macdonald placed one hand over Anika’s left shoulder and squeezed it a little. Stop that! You know Bethany is afraid of you! Bethany, she was just joking. Take a deep breath and dry us up, okay? Or we will get a fever if we travel like this.

Bethany Matthews slowly nodded and mumbled her Spells. A circle of Fire surrounded them, and a gentle breeze pushed the heat against their bodies. In minutes, they were all dry, and she dispersed the Fire. Alex asked James Macdonald while pointing with his thumb at the throwing-eye-daggers women behind him, Those three are always like that? Because if they argue for the pettiest thing, and they don’t trust each other, sooner or later things are going to go wrong.

They like to mess with each other, but I wouldn’t want anyone else covering my back. Our voyages are always fun, like you noticed over the last few days that you were travelling with us because long voyages tend to be quite boring if there is no action in the middle. With them around, we always have plenty of opportunities for a laugh. You should worry about yourself because when a Fairy or a Mermaid set their eyes on a target, they don’t give up easily. And it seems you became a target for those two.

Alex asked while going for his horse, What do you suggest I do? I can always flee and avoid them forever.

That won’t work. They will outlive both of us, and they will eventually catch you. Either tomorrow, ten or twenty years from now. Time doesn’t matter to them. Besides, why would you want to escape? The love of a Mermaid or a Fairy can increase your life expectancy tremendously, and not every Human can make them fall in love. Unless, you already have a woman. That would be surprising for someone as young as you, but I couldn’t also believe when everyone at the Guild of the Adventurers recommended you.

    Chapter 1.1 – Quest in Azurath 1.1

Alex skilfully avoided the questions by talking the least possible about him while riding his horse next to James Macdonald. I am used to having my employers doubting my skills in the first job, but then they realize I am way more powerful than the money they paid for my services, and they always hire me again.

Well, I will be one of them, for sure. Your services were extremely useful, and we completed this extremely dangerous Quest with none of us dying, and… I was told that you are also a powerful Mage, but I only saw you using a sword, daggers, bow, and your shield. I noticed you glowing a little with Magic when you were running at an incredible speed to that Orc, but it was only that time.

Alex nodded with a serious face. Lucky for you, because if I needed to use my Magic, that would mean that we were in serious danger.

You think we weren’t in danger this morning when those thirty Goblins ambushed us in that passage in the mountains?

No, that was only a warmup. I am used to more dangerous things. Goblins and Orcs are only threatening while their leader is alive. When he dies, they don’t know what to do, and they become easy prey.

I see… You are indeed very knowledgeable regarding Monsters, for someone of your age.

Alex went silent for a while, and he then said, I have far more experience than I should… Do you mind if we go faster? We are still at one day’s ride from the City, and I was hoping to arrive by tomorrow morning.

James Macdonald kicked his horse’s sides and signalled the others to follow them. Sure! I also want to celebrate this finished Quest and get our payment!

At night, Alex was in the middle of his guard shift while everyone else was sleeping. The Orc’s meat got smoked, and he could finally relax when the Mermaid and the Fairy went to sleep and let him alone, it was tiring him having to avoid their advances. A low voice whispered near his right ear, I thought they would never leave! So annoying!

Alex caressed the tiny head of his Wind Spirit, seated on his shoulder. Jealous are we, my cute Shinatobe? You know I only have eyes for you.

The Spirit of five centimetres tall, with long blonde hair and dressed in a long white dress slapped his index finger. You only say that because Sarutahiko Okami is not here. Fortunately for me, that annoying Spirit of the Earth went to visit Suijin, the Spirit of the Water, to see if he already made a contract with a Mage Summoner or not. If he is still free, maybe she can convince him to meet you.

What about Kagu-tsuchi, the Spirit of Fire?

He keeps on avoiding me. I guess he is still a little annoyed because I am spending a lot of time with you, and he may feel a little lonely. I am entitled to be at your side, considering that I inherited you. But I miss my kind Master, Yahei Brim. How is he?

My father is well. He sent you a kiss last time I talked with him, and I already gave you that kiss. I also miss my gentle Earth Spirit. She was the first Spirit to approach me not because she had to, but because she wanted, remember? You keep saying that you inherited me, like if I am a huge bother. I also inherited you when my father gave me this pendant and taught me how to travel to this World, or did you forget already?

Shinatobe pouted. I just don’t like the way Sarutahiko Okami is always flirting with you. I never said you were a bother, did I? I wouldn’t make a contract with you if I didn’t want to, no matter who your father is. It’s just… Sarutahiko Okami is older than me, and she always says she is way more experienced, regarding matters of the heart, and that annoys me so much…

Alex caressed the Spirit’s left barefoot, making her smile from the tickles. You could talk with her. I think she wouldn’t mind teaching you some of her experience.

Shinatobe spoke, regretting immediately what she said, Nah, I prefer learning from you, if you don’t mind. Oops… I said this out loud, didn’t I? Now, this is awkward…

I can pretend I didn’t hear it if that makes you feel any better.

Yes, please do. It’s probably better if I go for a night fly before I say something embarrassing again.

Alex made a slight smile. Or, and this is just an idea, you could sing for me one of your beautiful songs. You know how much I like to hear you sing. And we can talk some more after that, to forget this awkward moment.

Yes, I can do that. I will sing something that doesn’t make you sleepy, okay?

Alex stared at the fire in front of him, listening to the song of his Wind Spirit. A song about times long gone, when Spirits roamed carefree, without fearing the Monsters that came from the strange Magical Voids in the sky that began appearing four hundred years ago.

His stepfather told him how a small dot of light appeared to him in his youth and gave him the pendant that granted him passage to that World, through any door on Earth. With his stepfather’s explanations and after talking with Shinatobe, Alex understood that time was different between both Worlds. One hour on Earth was equal to ten hours on Azurath, but if he used the pendant, he could travel through both Worlds instantly, as if time didn’t pass on the World to where he was travelling.

That concept of Magic on doors that granted passage between Worlds through time and space was so unbelievable, that the first time he tried to calculate the amount of energy to do such a thing, he got a huge migraine. He had to accept what his stepfather told him, that World needed help, and he used to travel there when he was younger, but when he got older and it was too dangerous for him to rush into Quests, he kept the pendant hidden, until he found a worthy replacement. And he chose his adoptive son for that task.

Shinatobe finished her song, and they talked for quite some time about her life and adventures. Between her songs and stories, morning came, and Alex began preparing breakfast for everyone so that they could continue the voyage.

The day went by with a fast trot of the horses and a few quick stops for resting in the middle, and a pleasant lunch with the Mermaid and the Fairy messing with each other.

By dinnertime, they entered the gates of the ‘City of Keldunes’, the Capital of the ‘Kingdom of Bouria’.

At the Guild of Adventurers, James Macdonald showed to the receptionist the pile of tiny Magical Orbs his Party took from the Goblins, and Alex Brim pointed to the big Orb on his hand that he took from the Four-Armed Orc, putting it on his belt purse again. The receptionist signed the Quest form and put a stamp on it, delivering the original to James Macdonald and keeping the copy for the records of the Guild. She then gave him the payment, and James Macdonald delivered the three gold coins that he owed to Alex, plus his share of the Orc’s meat. He paid in advance two gold coins when they first met, and with that last payment, Alex’s contract ended.

Alex made a deep bow and said, It was a pleasure working with you and your Party, Mister James. If you need my services again, please contact my agent.

James pointed to a little girl of eight years old dressed in a long white dress and with long blonde hair and green eyes that was smiling at them from a nearby table. You mean her, right? How did such a young girl become your agent, and why you let her accept Quests on your behalf? Do you trust her that much? Because she can one day make a blunder and accept a Quest or a job that is too dangerous because of her inexperience.

Alex waved at the smiling blonde little girl and answered, I trust her with my life, Mister James. Now if you excuse me, I must go.

Suddenly, Anika Wright put her hand on the back of Alex’s head and pulled him near, giving him a long kiss. She then let him go and said with a kinky smile, Until we meet again, Alex. Perhaps on our next encounter, we could talk some more, because I really enjoyed our talk last night. I bet the flat-board Fairy is throwing daggers at me with her eyes right now, but I don’t care. It’s not my fault if she is so shy for her age.

Alex poked Anika’s nose. You should be a little more prudish, beautiful Mermaid. Kissing a man like that can give him the wrong hint.

I know very well what I am doing, Alex, and so do you. Besides, if I don’t do things like this, you might think that I am joking, when I am not.

Anika winked one eye and left to join the other members of her Party at a table in the left corner of the room, with Wenammy looking angrily at her, that she quickly changed to a timid smile and a wave towards Alex when she saw him looking.

Alex waved back at her and her companions and went to meet his agent, the Wind Spirit Shinatobe, disguised as a little girl. He kissed her forehead and sat at her side.

Alex lowered his voice and asked with a smile, Hello, pretty one. You waited for me for how long?

I flew ahead of you and arrived minutes ago. I already checked your rented room, the cleaning lady was there and cleaned the mess you made last time.

Yeah, that was stupid of me, trying a new Wind Spell and using so much Magic. I should have started with just a small whirlpool instead of that big tornado. I didn’t even have time to clean everything, because it was time to talk with Mister James Macdonald because of his Quest. Thanks for dispersing the Magic before I broke this Guild.

Shinatobe made a proud pose by looking to the side and raising her chin. That was nothing for a being as powerful as me! You are returning to your place, right?

Yes, I need to sleep early. Tomorrow is my first day in School and I can’t be late. I already missed the reception, I can’t skip the first day of class as well!

Shinatobe nodded and took a sip of the juice in front of her while pointing to a cup next to it. Have a drink with me and relax for a while, then you can go.

Alex grabbed the cup and took a big gulp. He then faced Shinatobe and said, Even if I stay on Earth for a month, you won’t notice, right? Because when I come back, the time will be the same.

Yeah, it will only pass one or two seconds. But for you, it won’t be. You could even forget everything about me if you take too long to return.

Never, my cute Shinatobe, never. Here, this big Magic Orb is yours. Eat the Magic when no one is around and keep the crystal for me. I need to find an artisan to make me something from it.

Shinatobe giggled and took another sip of her juice while quickly grabbing the Orb. They talked for a while and when she noticed that the Mermaid Anika Wright was looking at them for far too long, she signalled Alex to go. He kissed her forehead again and went to the upper floor and opened the second door on the right of the corridor where the rooms for rent were.

After closing the door and the curtain of the window that led to the main street, he touched the pendant that was hidden under his shirt, and right before opening the closet door, he whispered, By the power of the fallen Spirits, open a Passage to Earth!

When the closet opened, a faint glow was inside, instead of the empty space to put clothes like in any other closet. Alex entered, closing the door behind him. Another door appeared in front of him, and when Alex opened it, he entered his room on Earth. He stretched his arms and said in a low voice, I should have eaten something before returning, but Shinatobe was getting annoyed by the stare of that crazy and extremely beautiful Mermaid. Well, time for a quick bath, and then I am going to make a snack before doing some work. I have some reports to finish so that tomorrow I can focus solely on my new life as a High School student.

Alex Brim looked at the big mirror on the wall and untied his low ponytail, smiling at his Earth persona, Sakamo Ryu. I hope you are as excited as I am, Ryu! So, bath, eat, work!

Sakamo Ryu took off his clothes and weapons and put them in the closet and went to the bathroom for a well-deserved bath.

Chapter 2 – First day of High School 1

In the morning, Sakamo Ryu grabbed his new School bag and left his house. His new School was only a six-minute walk, that was one of the reasons why he rented that house. The other one was that the real state agency also informed him that there was a nice family restaurant nearby and a small market.

In the street, there was a familiar man disguised in a municipal uniform, sweeping the floor. Sakamo Ryu made a slight nod, and the man returned it.

Ryu walked and looked left and right, trying to find a place where he could have breakfast, considering it was still early for School, and he couldn’t eat breakfast at home because he didn’t buy groceries for his new house.

He finally found the market. It was close to his house like the agency told him. He went in and checked the shelves, grabbing two pieces of bread, a juice, and an already prepared boxed lunch. After paying, Ryu continued on his path along the still empty small street that would end in the main street, eating his breakfast while walking.

Right at the corner, he saw the family restaurant, and looked to the window to check the menu. A lot of tasty dishes. I think this will become my canteen every night if the food is well made. I can also cook from time to time, considering my kitchen is fully equipped.

A woman’s voice called his attention, No one ever complained about my dishes. At least, not to my face. Are you a new resident?

Ryu looked to his left, and a petite old lady was smiling at him, next to a short and fat boy of probably Ryu’s age, with short hair and red cheeks. The old lady was dressed in a very simple Yukata, and the boy was wearing the same uniform that Ryu had. Ryu made a deep bow and smiled back. Yes, I am. Nice to meet you, I am Sakamo Ryu. I moved yesterday to a house in the middle of this street.

Welcome to the neighbourhood, then. I am Takechi Hanpeita, but you can call me Grandma Takechi-san like everybody does. This is my grandson, Takechi Hito. It seems you both are attending the same High School, judging by your uniform.

Ryu nodded. Yes, Tokyo Metropolitan Nishi High School. I missed the reception yesterday because I had too many things to take care of with the moving and all, so I think I will be a little lost today.

Grandma Takechi-san elbowed her grandson, and he spoke in a low voice, I can help you with that. I have an extra map and I can point you to the places where you need to go, if you want.

Thanks, that would be a tremendous help. I saw some photos online of the School, but having a guide would be better.

The old lady pointed to the grocery bag Ryu was carrying. If I am not mistaken, that is an already made lunch box, right?

Yes, I didn’t buy groceries yesterday, so I couldn’t prepare one at home. I hope I have time to buy some things today, or I am going to have this kind of boxed lunch tomorrow again!

Grandma Takechi-san winked. Well then, you can’t eat things like that every day. What about if you come to our restaurant today for dinner? If you like my food, I can prepare a boxed lunch for you, and you can get it in the morning, before going to school. For a reasonable price, of course.

Really? That would be amazing! Home-made food for lunch, and eating at this pleasant restaurant at dinner? I think I will accept your offer.

Good, I will wait for you then, maybe at eight?

Yes, I think I can finish some reports that I need to read and after sending a couple of emails, I will come.

The old lady made a puzzled face. Today is the first day of School, and you already have reports to read? You are an excellent student, it seems.

I guess so. Now, if you excuse me, it’s probably better if we go. I need to have a meeting with the Principal before going to my class, to apologise for my absence yesterday and to introduce myself. I got an email from him yesterday, complaining.

Grandma Takechi-san waved at them and went inside. While walking along the main street, Takechi Hito asked, Why the Principal sent an email complaining, Sakamo-san?

He wanted to call me to do a speech at the reception yesterday, but I didn’t go, and I didn’t tell him. Like if I would know that he wanted me there! And call me Sakamo-kun. We have the same age, right?

Ok… In that case, I will allow you to call me Takechi-sama!

Sakamo Ryu looked at Takeshi Hito, surprised by his answer, and saw him looking back with a smile and a proud pose, with his chin high and both fists on his waist. Sakamo laughed at the weird answer, Ahahah! You are funny, Takechi-sama. If you allow it, then I shall call you like that, from this day onward! Guide me, oh Great One! Show me the ways and the intricacies of our new School! May your wisdom and caring be my lighthouse on this new chapter of my life!

I suppose I can find an opening on my extremely busy schedule to help you with that! Does this mean we are going and coming from School, every day, from now on? Because it feels awkward. We would look like a couple. Not that I think you are ugly. You are a very beautiful girl, but you are not my type.

Sakamo Ryu frowned. What are you talking about? The last time I check, I am a boy. You can also see that I am wearing trousers instead of the short skirt of our School’s uniform, right?

Takechi Hito raised one eyebrow while checking Sakamo from top to bottom. Really? Because you could fool me. You don’t have noticeable boobs, but a lot of girls develop later. You have a beautiful face, you are tall, with a good complexion, you have long hair tied in a pretty braid… are you sure you are not a girl? Because if you are a boy, the girls at our School will go crazy about you!

I am a boy, but I am flattered if you think I am beautiful. I am sorry, but you are not my type as well, so if your heart is beating stronger because of me, tell him to calm down. Or, and this is just an idea, if you think girls will go crazy because of me, you could help me out on making my School life easier by pretending to be my boyfriend. What do you say? Are you up for the task?

Nah, I pass. You did that when you were in Middle School? You pretended to be dating a boy so that girls would leave you alone?

Sakamo Ryu shook his head. No, I didn’t need to. I was homeschooled. This will be the first time I go to a School with boys and girls of my age.

Takechi Hito disguisedly signalled with his head to the group of girls ahead of them on the sidewalk and lowered his voice, Judging by the way those girls are giggling and looking back at you, you are going to be a huge success, I bet.

Sakamo elbowed Takechi while they approached the School’s gates. What are you talking about? They are surely looking at you, you pop-idol! Now, point me to the Principal’s office, okay? It’s still early, and if you don’t mind waiting for me, I could use a brief tour around.

Sure, I will wait outside the Principal’s office, like if I am some sort of delinquent, waiting to be punished!

Sakamo thought for a moment that Takechi Hito was worried, but he was smiling a lot. He seemed happy with the idea of giving out a certain air of a bad boy. Then, Sakamo noticed another familiar man on the right side of the School’s gate, looking at him, dressed in a dark blue suit. The man made a slight bow and said, as soon as Sakamo and Takechi were near him, Good morning, Sakamo-san. If you can be so kind as to lend me your home key, I will have some people taking care of the moving guys with your belongings. I will bring back the key as soon as everything is finished.

Sakamo nodded and gave him the key, with Takechi wondering what was that about. When the man put the key in his pocket, Sakamo said, What about my new training apparatus?

A delivering company will also deliver them today. I already looked at the plant of your house with your recommendations for the position of the several apparatus, so I am sure that when you return home, you will be satisfied. I also took care of hiring a cleaning lady and told her your requests. Do you also need a cook?

Sakamo shook his head. That won’t be needed. I took care of that, moments ago.

Very well. If you excuse me, I shall take my leave now.

The man made another slight bow and left, entering a grey car that was parked nearby with a driver in a dark blue suit at the wheel. Takechi frowned and Sakamo shrugged, pulling him through the School’s gates.

When they entered the room that acted as a reception, Teacher’s lounge and meeting room, a middle-aged woman was there, turning on her computer. She looked up when she heard the door opening and raised one inquisitive eyebrow.

Sakamo smiled and after bowing, he said, Good morning, I am Sakamo Ryu. I wish to talk with the Principal if that’s possible.

The woman opened her face in a big smile that surprised Takechi Hito and said, Sakamo-san, welcome to our School! I will warn the Principal if you don’t mind waiting for a moment!

The woman left in a hurry to a door at her right marked with a sign with the name of the Principal, making Takechi wonder why so much reverence for a mere student. Now that was strange. She looked annoyed when we entered, but when you said your name, she completely changed. Are you someone important or what?

Probably she thinks I am. I guess we can seat on these chairs, right?

As soon as Takechi sat, the Principal barged out the door of his office and made a profound bow. It is indeed an honour to have you attending my School, Sakamo-san! Please, come in, I was hoping I could talk with you before classes started!

Sakamo got up and waved both hands. Please, Principal, treat me like any other student. It will be difficult for me if you keep doing that!

Ok, but please, do come in.

As soon as the door closed, Takechi asked the woman behind the desk, What was that about?

He got a shrug from the woman, who quickly returned to her annoyed look. Takechi went silent, thinking.

Inside the office, Sakamo sat on the empty chair in front of the Principal’s desk, who asked with a smile, Well, if I can be so bold on asking… Why didn’t you come yesterday to the reception of the new students? I hoped you could make a speech to the other students, considering that you got the highest grade on the admission tests, this year.

I apologize for that, but I had a lot to take care of yesterday, because of the moving to my new home. I was living in a hotel while doing the admission tests for this School and to the others that I applied to, but only yesterday I moved to a house near this School.

The Principal slowly changed his smile to an inquisitive look. You applied to other Schools? This was not your first choice? And if I may ask, what was your score on the other admission tests?

I applied to every High School in Tokyo, public and private. I got the highest score on all of them, but I chose this one not only because of the classes and the Teachers but also because I liked the house that I found and this was the nearest School.

Chapter 2.1 – First day of High School 1.1

The Principal gulped. Applying to the admission tests of all the High Schools and getting the highest score on all of them was not a simple task. Having such a student attending his School would also be good for him, not only to increase the status of the School, but because he could also brag about having an amazing student under his care.

I see… I thank you for that choice, and I hope we don’t make you regret it. It will be an honour to have you here, and I do hope we can help you in your future when you graduate.

As do I, Principal. By the way, I may need to be absent one or two days every week because of my part-time job, but I will compensate with my grades, don’t worry.

Well, we are a little lenient with allowing students to have part-time jobs instead of concentrating solely on their studies, but I hope it doesn’t make you fall behind in classes.

Sakamo shook his head with a serious look. It won’t. You don’t need to worry. Besides, if I didn’t have a part-time, I couldn’t attend School, considering it is how I earn my money for my daily expenses because I live alone.

You don’t have family in Tokyo? We have some students also in that situation, but they have family nearby.

No, I am all alone. My family is in Nakanojo, in the Gunma district. A little far for help, if it’s not an emergency, but I can manage. It will also be easier to study, because there are no family members to distract me, like some of the other students.

The Principal intertwined his fingers over his desk and leaned forward a bit. Yes, you have a point. And that student outside, he is your friend?

I hope he will become one. He is my guide for today. I meet him today when I was coming here, and he offered to show me around before classes started because I missed the reception yesterday.

The Principal got up with a smile. I shall not take any more of your time, then. Enjoy your tour, and if you have any doubts or problems, my staff and I are at your disposal.

He quickly continued, when he saw Sakamo rolling up his eyes. As we are always at the disposal of our students, of course!

Of course… Thank you for understanding my situation. I shall take my leave and let you work.

Sakamo exited the office, leaving behind a smiling Principal that was already thinking about the amount of prestige such a student would grant his School.

Takechi got up as soon as he heard the door opening and asked, All done? Because we have little time to look around. It’s probably better if I show you where the cafeteria is, the library, and the Gym, considering those are the most important ones. After the Gym, I can take you to your classroom, just to make sure you don’t get lost. Perhaps you could look at the map that I gave you while we walk so that you get used to the corridors.

As you wish, Takechi-sama! Please, lead the way to this humble servant of yours, oh Great One!

Takeshi Hito laughed when he noticed the surprised look the woman behind the desk was making. Ahahah! Yes, I will allow you to worship me like that! Continue, worship me more!

Sakamo opened the door that exited to the main corridor and made a deep bow while pointing with his open right palm. Guide me through these unknown corridors, Takechi-sama! This humble servant will follow you anywhere!

Ahahah! This is funny! okay, the cafeteria is over there.

Takechi noticed that there were groups of girls giggling and staring at them as they walked, and he lowered his voice, See what I told you, Sakamo-kun? All the girls go nuts with you!

I still think it’s because of you. I once saw a pop-idol that looked just like you. Maybe they are your fans.

Takechi frowned a little. Yeah, that would be cool, and if you were not so good-looking, I could be the target of their interest. I am feeling a sudden urge to squeeze your neck…

Sakamo placed his right arm over Takechi’s shoulders. Don’t threaten me, Takechi-sama, or you may find yourself looking at a pool of your blood on the floor!

Takechi glanced at Sakamo, and saw him making a big smile but with a scary glow in his eyes, that made him ask, You… are joking, right?

Probably, but you were also joking, right? Save your rage for your enemies, Takechi-sama. You don’t need to pick a fight with me. Unless you want me to remove your heart from your dead body and eat it!

Takechi Hito gulped. Sometimes you say things in a way that I don’t know if you are joking or talking seriously…

Sakamo made a big smile. You are the one at fault, you teased me first. Next stop, please!

They walked along the several corridors of the School, with Sakamo greeting with a smile every time a girl looked at him, making them turn bright red and wave back with an even bigger smile. Every time he did that, Takechi grunted, receiving a tap on his back from a laughing Sakamo.

When they were in the Gym, the bell rang and Takechi dragged Sakamo out from the pull-ups bar where he was hanging upside down by his legs. Let’s go, or we are going to be late! Our classrooms are on the other edge of the School, I totally lost track of time!

Sakamo ran after Takechi, having to slow down a lot because Takechi’s short legs didn’t grant him enough speed to win against the speeder Sakamo.

Takechi stopped in front of a door and pointed at it while trying to catch his breath. This… is yours… class 1-A. I am… two rooms… ahead, class… 1-C. Try… to make some friends… okay? I will… come to see you at the break…

You need to train more, Takechi-sama. You are almost dying just for this small run. Thanks for your help, we will meet later.

Takechi raised one thumb while forcing a smile and walked to his classroom door. Sakamo took one deep breath and knocked, receiving an order to enter after a couple of seconds.

When he opened the door, he saw a Teacher standing near his desk at the front, looking at him with a puzzled look. He looked as if he was forty years old, or a little more, dressed in jeans and a light blue shirt untucked.

Sakamo took a quick glance at the other students, and they were all staring at him. He entered the room and after making a deep bow, he said, I am sorry for my delay, sensei. I arrived early, but I had a meeting with the Principal then I went for a quick tour of the School, and I was at the Gym when the bell rang. I am Sakamo Ryu, nice to meet you.

The Teacher raised one eyebrow at that name, and the other students whispered. Sakamo could hear small bits, and he remained still, looking at the Teacher. No way… he is that guy, the one with a perfect score… he didn’t come yesterday… he is beautiful… such long hair…

The Teacher looked at the list of names that was on his desk and nodded. Yes, you are in the right class. I just finished the calling, and I thought you were absent. Try to be on time, from now on. There is an empty desk over there, near the window.

Sakamo did another deep bow. Thank you for understanding, sensei.

Sakamo went to the desk that the Teacher pointed out, and as he was walking there, all looks were upon him, together with the sighing of the several girls in the class.

Sakamo kept on smiling while looking at his colleagues and after seating, he took out his books and notebook, staring at the blackboard, where the Teacher was already writing his name and some equations. My name is Kaishu Katsu. You can call me Kaishu-sensei. I am responsible for teaching you all, the amazing world of Mathematics. For your first assignment, I want everyone to copy these equations and try to solve them. I need to evaluate your knowledge, to know from where I must start.

A boy complained, from the centre row, Kaishu-sensei, equations right on the first day of School? Can’t we relax for a bit and talk about us, for example?

Kaishu Katsu looked back with a slight smile and said, You are free to do that, as I am to evaluate you on your conversation instead of your Math knowledge. Right from the bat, I can say you will fail this class, just by hearing your annoying voice instead of the noise of your pencil, solving these equations.

The boy gulped and grabbed his pencil in a hurry. At the back, Sakamo finished the equations and was whispering to his notebook, This was way too easy. My father warned me about this, maybe I am really ahead with my knowledge for a normal High School. Now, what do I do… I wait for everyone else… or…

Sakamo wrote a quick and very long equation in his notebook and began solving it.

Kaishu Katsu was walking among the desks, looking at the work of his students, and he noticed how Sakamo was so concentrated on his work and went to him. He stood right next to his desk, looking at the notebook, and frowned.

After a few seconds of waiting for his student to notice him, Kaishu Katsu asked, What are you doing? Those are not the equations on the board.

Sakamo looked up with a surprised look. Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you there, sensei. I already finished those equations, and I was getting bored.

Kaishu Katsu raised one eyebrow and pointed at the board. Really? Then you won’t mind going to the board and show everyone how to solve those equations.

Sakamo blinked and looked around. But… did everyone finish? The equations were supposed to let sensei know what the knowledge of everyone is, right?

That is true, but I never liked know-it-all students. You could have gotten the highest score on your admission tests by pure luck. I want to check correctly your amount of knowledge.

Sakamo answered in a low voice while getting up, Sensei, it will be a bad idea to underestimate me. You know nothing about me, and it will be terrible for your image in front of everyone if you make a fool of yourself. I will do my best not to embarrass you during class, but don’t test my patience.

Kaishu Katsu frowned at the way Sakamo was speaking and how he looked at him from the corner of his eyes. Sakamo went to the board and quickly solved all four equations. He then faced his Teacher and waited. Kaishu Katsu frowned and said, "That is correct. Now sum the first results, divide by the square root, multiply by the sum of the last two
