    Yellow Rose

    By C.W. Laurie

A flower shape floats in my mug like a stranded plant drifting in a lake of hot chocolate. It makes me think of Rose, my ex-girlfriend. That time we went to Sunrise Rose Fields and lay on an empty patch of grass between the roses. Cloud gazing whilst holding her hand in mine. I reached over to grab a yellow rose because that was her favourite and she took it from my hand, placing it on her heart as she leaned over to kiss me. I grabbed onto her pink frilly dress by the waist, pulling her into my chest so there was no space between us. That was one of the rare occasions she wore a dress on one of our dates. It was special. One of the best days of my life and one we would both remember forever.

I think of her all the time, the way she would look at me with her mysterious eyes; her hidden thoughts that I could never grasp. The way she would press her hand to her mouth to stop herself from laughing. I will never forget the way she made me feel. It’s been a year since we ended our relationship. I’m turning twenty-one in less than a month.

I’m hoping to settle down with my new girlfriend Emma, who is sitting with me in the Cat Cafe, where we come regularly to get our morning coffee or tea. Emma has wavy brown hair down to her shoulders, pale skin, and square blue glasses that makes her look even more adorable. She’s wearing a cute brown dress with a white flower pattern design, though she usually wears casual jeans with a checkered top. Lit-up cat lights are hanging from the display windows of the cafe and balls of cat string dangle from the ceiling like chandeliers. The cats sleep on a large white sofa placed along the side wall next to the tables. Pet toys litter the floor. Even the tables have painted cat paw prints on them. We both love cats, so this is our favourite cafe.

I met Emma at the LGBTQ club at college. It was during my first year and I was just starting to get
