    It was Christmas 1895 – all the awfulness ahead of us – unknown- and I was a young man.

    I looked at Milly and we caught each other’s eyes.

    The fire roared and cracked, spinning and dancing with red hot life, and chestnuts began to pop and burst and Elizabeth – the young always know best – grabbed one, opened her hand, immediately dropping it, blowing, and exclaiming, onto her hand.

    I hadn’t met your mother yet – that was the next thing to come.
