Wilma stepped out from the quaint-looking apartment building, clad in blue running tights and a top. Her running shoes were the latest, hovering over the ground for maximum comfort. The air was chilly, with a sharp autumn bite to it. The smell of too-ripe prunes made her want to gag. In the city, there were no prunes, fresh or rotting.

The courtyard was surrounded by similar-looking apartment buildings to her own, two-storey red-brown brick buildings, with slanting red tile roof. In front of her, a couple of swings dangled in the wind. Grass grew in the sand beneath. No children played in the playground.

Stretching, and involuntarily scratching her hands against the rough red-brown brick building, she contemplated her recent move. It certainly wasn’t a straightforward choice, moving out into an apartment several hundred years old, in a sleepy residential area where she didn’t know anybody. At the same time, that was the charm, escaping all painful memories
