Lucy
Smoothing her apron, Lucy started to load the up the cart in front of her with coffees her mother had prepared and baked goods her brother had made. Her family’s coffee shop was fuller than usual today due to a festival being held at the park across the street. Her dad was trying to hand out the orders as quickly as possible, but the shop remained consistently full.
The coffee shop had always been pretty successful, thanks in part to its well-chosen location. However, with the park so close, it became the go-to shop whenever there was an activity held there.
Considering that happened about once a month, there was always a few days of mayhem to look forward to. Her family was used to it and handled it well, but Lucy didn’t like it as much when it was this hectic. For her brother, Roberto, it was just a routine day. He was in charge of baking and was able to zone out when he was working on what they were making for the day. He always said the kitchen was the job to do, he didn’t often have to deal with the customers directly.
Lucy’s mother and father helped in the kitchen, but primarily ran the front of the shop and they loved it. Their favorite days were days when the shop was packed and there was a line waiting for tables. Lucy had always told them this was the perfect setting for them since they thrived in all the noise and chaos.
Lucy, on the other hand, felt very differently than her family on this point. Busy days were her least favorite. She preferred Sundays mornings when it was quiet and calm. There were only ever a few customers and they were always half asleep. That peaceful atmosphere was where she thrived. She dreamed of finding her own perfect setting. As much as she loved working with her family, this was not her ideal workplace. She’d been working with them for the last five years, ever since she graduated high school. Since she began working, she had been saving her money to open her own business in the future. Her parents had always known this was temporary and they were supportive, as always. Her brother was happy to keep working the kitchen, so they knew they wouldn’t need to hire a whole new staff when Lucy moved on.
It was time to take the cart to hand out their daily orders. The coffee shop was on the ground floor of a nine story building that housed a finance company. They had worked out a deal where Lucy and her mother would bring food orders directly to the employees. This gave the coffee shop consistent customers and the company’s employees didn’t have to waste time walking down to the shop several times a day. Because of the additional customers today, Lucy knew her mom wouldn’t be able to help deliver the orders today like normal, yet she was relieved to be able to get out of the loud coffee shop for a little while. Once the cart was ready, Lucy went to her mother and told her, I’m going to hand out the orders on my own. You stay here and help Dad. He can really use you right now
. Her mom’s blue eyes shined with gratitude. Lucy looked back with her dark brown eyes and her mom gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before turning to get
