Chapter 1: Monster Hunters
If you’re scared… I can sing a song?
A young-faced man by the name of Miller, casually dressed, said as he shakily strolled through the dark streets that had recently been suddenly abandoned.
I think you’re the scared one, Miller…
A rough-faced man who stood slightly in front of him said, tightly wielding an AEK-971 rifle in his hands as his eyes darted around as they scanned the dark invisible area. He was ex-military, and he always asked to be referred to by his first name, Logan.
I’m not scared, I just want to sing… everyone likes to sing.
I’m not everyone,
The tension between the two whispers was drowned out by their heavy reinforced footsteps. The steps of three people as they carefully walked kept their minds focused with jittery eyes.
Guys…
The final guy in this trio of characters, a man in a baggy stereotypical camouflage military uniform, that seemed far too scared for the uniform he claimed to wear, Scott. Shouldn’t you be quiet? What if it hears us?
Hell no!
Miller blasted out without missing a beat, I’m not being silent in this nightmare. In every horror film, people are always silent. Why would you stay quiet? The best way to deal with fear is to keep yourself talking. Talk to yourself and sing a little song to keep your mind sane whilst the world around you breaks apart and everyone else dies. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not an idiot… I know when to be quiet, But since we are safe, why stay silent?
Clearly you don’t know when to be quiet…
Logan joked as Scott shakily smiled as he walked with jelly-like legs.
And then, before Miller could continue speaking.
SPLASH!
Damping his entire hidden trouser leg, Scott dropped his leg into a large puddle that was invisible due to the dark clouds above.
Oh, come on…
He said as he shook his leg like a dog, trying to fling off the droplets of water he splashed against himself.
He looked to his companions in fear, worried of the impression he was giving off. But all he got was an intimidating stare from Logan, and Miller who was trying not to laugh.
It happens to everyone…
Miller said as if he wasn’t always looking down to avoid this situation.
Not everyone…
Logan’s deep voice interjected again, causing Miller’s face to drop as he watched Logan carry on moving.
The three of them stepped down the street carefully looking into the musty windows of the houses they stepped past.
Logan led the charge as he tightly held the heavy rifle in his hand, always looking forward like a wild animal on the hunt, as if he had found his prey.
Stomp!
Logan stomped his right foot, alerting Miller and Scott who faced the front with him, reaching down into the holsters on their waists as if that was normal for them. Scott’s was always visible, ready to reach whenever he needed, but Miller had his covered by his dark blue coat.
The two of them pulled out their AMT Auto-mags, semi-automatic pistols, quietly holding them down, tightly, in their hands as they looked at each other in worry.
And then…
Silence…
Logan had stopped moving. It was like the air was taken out of the room as Scott’s gulping could be heard by all.
It took Miller all his energy not to say something…
And that didn’t work…
What are we doing?
He whispered but got no response from Logan who still faced forward.
So he tried again…
Hello, Mr Logan, Sir?
Logan still faced forward, as still as a statue, and then continued walking again.
So, it’s nothing…
Miller said as if Logan had done this a few times already.
You’ve always got to be alert,
Logan said, Oh, and Miller, please shut up for once in your life.
Not as long as we are stuck in this hell hole.
They continued their steps, watching as they moved through what quickly became a minefield of puddles. Circular and oval puddles scattered around far too frequently to be a coincidence.
When did it last rain?
Logan asked as Scott just looked at Miller as if asking him. But the two just shrugged their shoulders, unable to tell him
Useless…
Miller sighed as he looked down to his gun, thinking of just
