The Penzance Smash: A story of one loft, one race and one family
()
About this ebook
Through this setting, the author evokes a very moving and visual tale of the hardships faced by one family and recounts how one man brought up two young boys, giving them the best life that he could. There were no manuals or self-help groups then, but this man quietly went about raising his boys and teaching them the values that he believed would be necessary for their futures. He taught them to be independent, to be respectful and to never give up matter what life threw at them. Most importantly, he showed them what real love is.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to the memory of my late father, Joe. This man brought me and my brother up on his own after the tragic death of our mother when we were very young and without him, we would not be the people we are today. We can never repay him for all that he gave us.
It is also dedicated to the memory of my late mother, Minnie. Although our time together was short, her influence, gentle ways and love have never been forgotten.
It is dedicated to my big brother, Adrian, who also lived this story and who I look up to, to this day.
Finally, it is dedicated to my wife, Anne, the love of my life; our four children, the first unfortunately born asleep but never forgotten, followed by Zara, Laura and Ruth and our five grandchildren Jon, Sara, Joe, Ben and Alex.

The Penzance Smash
Introduction
This short story is best described using the words of the great American singer-songwriter, Kris Kristofferson. It is partly truth and partly fiction.
Whilst some of the pigeon names and details have been changed, it is based on true life events. It is a family history of sorts, telling of real people and of a sport which, once extremely popular, has now, sadly, almost disappeared.
It tells of working-class people who took great care of, and pride in, their families, their homing pigeons, and who also displayed exceptional levels of sportsmanship.
This pastime they shared was not about money – as there was not much. It was about caring for their birds, racing them, and trying to create a bloodline suitable for certain types of races. The sport is full of stories of great love, dedication, and bravery, of never giving up, and overcoming the harshest conditions the elements can throw at you. In many ways, it mirrors life itself.
What follows is a story of one loft, one race and one family.

The Loft
Joe Moffatt had been breeding and racing homing pigeons since he was just a little boy. It was a hobby inherited from his father and it fascinated him. He was keenly interested in birds bred to fly long distances and loved to hear the older fanciers tell stories of their prized birds flying home from such far-off places as
