Teaching Tara - Jeri Lynn Stone
Evil can lurk in the most innocent of young, wounded hearts.
Detectives Tara Woods and Matt Dobbs signed in at the murder scene, both sleep deprived.
The weekend night was muggy. A summer downpour was forecasted for some time before daylight. Clouds covered the moon and stars. The police cars’ blue strobe lights danced with an eerie ballet across their faces and the large, three-story, red brick home in front of them.
Tara rubbed the goose bumps from her arms and counted four police cars called to the scene. The Medical Examiner's van sat against the curb in front of the house. Behind it was the forensic van.
Someone thought it was the perfect night for a double homicide.

# 2 NOVEL IN THE TARA
SERIES
CHAPTER ONE
Evil can lurk in the most innocent of young, wounded hearts.
In the darkened foyer, Bob Chambers prepared to punch in his home security code. Sensing a malicious presence next to him, his hand stilled. Before he could shout a warning to his wife behind him, he felt a sharp object plunge into his stomach. A piercing pain stunned him. The air exhaled from his lungs.
He yelled out in fear and struggled as hard as his eighty-five year old feeble body could manage.
He had to protect his wife of sixty years. Had to.
The struggle earned him a hard blow to the head. He heard his beloved Edna scream as his knees hit the marbled floor, the object ripping through his chest. Moaning, he tried to rise.
That's when he saw through the bloody haze another masked assailant stab his wife with repeated thrusts. He screamed and cried out as she fell to the floor, the blood draining from her limp body. Nooooooo. Edna? Please, not my wife. Please God. Please God. No.
He prayed.
The knife entered his body, over and over.
Knowing his life was soon over, his hand reached out for his love, one last time.
CHAPTER TWO
Detectives Tara Woods and Matt Dobbs signed in at the murder scene, both sleep deprived from their last case they’d recently solved and closed.
The weekend night was muggy hot. A summer downpour was forecasted for some time before daylight. Clouds covered the quarter moon and stars. The police cars’ blue strobe lights danced with an eerie ballet across their faces and illuminated the large, three-story, red brick home in front of them.
Someone thought it was the perfect night for a double homicide.
Tara rubbed the sweat from her hands onto her blue jeans and counted four police cars called to the scene. The Medical Examiner's van sat against the curb in front of the house. Behind it was the forensic van.
Tara and Dobbs pulled out their protective gloves and boots from their bags and put them on before entering through the front door.
What do we have, Ben?
Tara asked the medical examiner squatted beside the male victim. She thought the examiner looked a lot like the handsome Russell Crowe, her favorite actor. She rubbed her eyes and covered a yawn as she looked around the scene.
Ben Marks glanced up as they drew near and nodded his head in a greeting. Tara. Dobbs. I see you two drew the short end of the stick and won the case. We have a husband and wife, both I would say in their mid-eighties stabbed multiple times. The wounds are consistent to the depth of a long-bladed pocket knife.
Dobbs glanced up. A stiletto switchblade, maybe? Gang related?
From the slices made, that's the weapon I would put my money on. Autopsy may change my mind, but I doubt it. As far as gang related, that's your expertise.
Ben continued. The blood is confined to the front entrance of the home. By the bruising on the man's face and a deep gash on the back of his head, he struggled with the killer before being overpowered. The woman shielded her face and body. Her arms, hands and shoulders had several deep cuts across them from the effort. The blade was plunged into her stomach four times and twice into her lung area. She collapsed to the floor, gone in an instant. I would put their deaths around ten or ten-thirty this evening. I'll pin it down to more of an exact time and cause when I do the autopsy.
Thanks, Ben. That's around the time the security company called it in.
Careful to stay away from the evidence, Tara stuck her gloved thumbs into her jeans front pockets and circled the two bodies lying on the tiled floor.
The elderly man, gray-haired and close to Dobb's height and build of 6' 2" and a hundred and eighty pounds lay on his side. His hand reached toward his wife as if to protect her. Drying blood pooled around him.
The woman, who looked a little smaller than Tara's 5' 6" and one hundred and twenty-five pounds laid a few feet him in a bloody, crumbled heap. A few hairpins littered the floor causing her gray hair to escape the stylish bun and partially cover her face. Parts or her blue gown was now red.
Both victims wearing evening clothes looked to be returning home from a night out. It was evident from their location and the blood splatter on the wall and floor that as soon as they both entered the elegant, multi-million dollar home, they were murdered.
Tara nodded to the officer working the case. Jackson, what have you found?
Officer Jackson, a twenty-five year veteran pulled his pants up and over his large belly before he walked over to Tara and Dobbs with his notebook in hand. I would say, from where the male victim lay, he entered first and the wife came in behind him. They were attacked from the front, so the killers were already inside. There were two killers. Two weapons. Each killed their own victim. She would've either helped her husband to fight his assailant or ran back out the door for help if there were only one. She did neither. No struggle marks on her body, only defensive. But, there are on his. Unless, she was involved and they turned on her after killing the old man.
Dobbs agreed. Possible. Won't rule it out.
His brows gathered as he studied the couple. Tell me something. I don't know much about it, but what woman would dress for a party in a long, expensive looking designer gown and not adorn themselves with jewelry? I've never met one, anyway.
Tara glanced down and studied the couple and nodded in thought. You're right. Not even a wedding ring, but you can tell by the indent on her finger she wore one. Robbery gone bad?
Maybe.
Dobbs pointed at the controls on the wall. State of the art security system with motion sensors. Best money can buy and the killers still got inside without sending an alert. The alarm sounded after the couple entered and they were murdered before they could punch in the code to reset it. This means, the robbers turned it off before they entered and turned it back on as they were leaving to not raise suspicion. The couple must have arrived home earlier than expected and surprised them as they were leaving.
Or, the female vic let them in.
Dobbs nodded with hesitancy. Or, she let them in.
But, you don't think so.
I don't know. It's looking more like a robbery to me.
Dobbs started toward the living area. Let's see if we can find out what else is missing besides the jewelry.
Tara followed and saw one of the police officers making notes on the destroyed room. It looked like a tornado had come through, she thought. A long, soft blue, cloth-covered sofa and a matching chair were turned over on their backs. A broken Tiffany lamp lay on the carpet. A small round table sitting between the sofa and the chair lay on its side. A pair of reading glasses, books and magazines were lying beside the table.
Nothing else was left in the room. The walls and mantles were bare. No paintings. No knick knacks or any type of valuables were lying around. On one wall a safe stood open. On closer inspection, Tara saw it was empty, which with everything else proved Dobbs' theory of a possible robbery.
Tara approached the rookie deputy. Banks, what do you have?
Banks glanced up from his notes and greeted them with a youthful, shy smile. Tara. Dobbs. The victims are Boyd and Edna Chambers.
As in Senator Chambers’ parents?
Dobbs asked.
Banks nodded. Yep.
Tara swore and rubbed her neck. I thought they looked familiar. This isn't going to be good. All hell is going to break loose when the Senator gets the news.
Guess we need to warn Chief Haynes.
Dobbs pulled out his cell and began punching in the numbers.
Tell him you're taking lead in this investigation.
Tara said.
Like hell I am. They don't call the Senator
Ball Buster Chambers for nothing.
CHAPTER THREE
A little after midnight, Teach stared at his reflection in the mirror as he loosened his silk tie, blue to match his eyes. He was pleased with his appearance. The Italian suit he wore for the party tonight cost him a small fortune, but well worth the price. He'd get his money back on the clothing.
At twenty-five, his six foot stature, street toned body, blonde hair, strong chiseled chin, sensuous smile and charming ways added up to what women lusted after and men envied. And, they let him know it.
He never
