    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I know that I have been a very fortunate person to have a family who never said, a discouraging word concerning my writing. My wife and my son, who is a professional firefighter, have stood by and cheered me on. I am deeply fond of my personal former Guardian Angel, at my former publisher. Megan McGowan. She has been a guiding light, and the mental force keeping me aware of what needs to be done in the correct sequence. I consider her a friend and confidant; I am fortunate she was my voice at my former publisher. I wish her all the best in her new endeavors.

    PROLOGUE

Angela Amato and her best friend from when they were in grade school, Barbara Wells, Flee the suburbs of Newark New Jersey, and her Father, who is the Don of the reputed Mafia Family. This criminal and soulless man has set a marriage between Angela and another Knuckle Dragging mafia thug. The girls in their late twenties, flee on the morning of the so-called announcement of marriage that was to be known at a party for the elite of local and federal politicos, who are on the payroll of this mafia don and his criminal empire. Their journey takes them from New Jersey to Canada, and across the ocean to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Switzerland and beyond. They are helped and protected by our old friends from the Guardian Co. John Braz and his amazing team of Women Warriors. They find a wealth of intimacy with this newly found freedom, and barely escape the clutches of the American FBI, controlled by a Liberal and socialist American Congresswoman, who would bring down the country and adopt a communist type of society. The many facets of this journey, including Angela and Barbara falling for the same man, untangle with happy results.

    CHAPTER ONE

WHERE ARE YOU? Looking from her bedroom window to the garden courtyard below. Angela Amato, a very worried and somewhat impatient pretty Italian girl, was scared out of her mind. Clutching her cell phone so hard, she feared the heat from her hand would melt it. At the other end her best friend and confidant, Barbara Wells, very calm and totally in possession of her faculties answered, keep your shorts on, I will be there in a minute. I am turning in to the back entrance to the garden now. Honey get your stuff down the back stairs now; I can get us out in less time it takes to pee. The big black Lincoln limo pulled up to the back door as Angela pushed thru it. Barbara jumped out, opened the back door, and helped her friend with only one rolling suitcase, saying get in before we are seen. I don’t want to get shot by one of your Fathers goons? Wheeling the big limo to the right thru the stone paved back drive, they were narrowly missed by the big box truck. The driver flipped them the bird, and Barbara had a few choice words for him. Two minutes later, on the street outside the walled mansion, built over a hundred years ago by Anthony Amato, Angela’s great grandfather. Barbara drove like a woman possessed back to her family home, where they would change vehicles and leave Newark New Jersey forever.

Wearing an oversized beach hat and polarized sun glasses, slumping down in the seat, do you think anyone but those Spanish caterers saw us she said to the smiling and super confident Barbara. No I was checking all the time we flew thru the back garden. Thank god she said, all the time I was on pins and needles, waiting for Gino, to come knocking on my door with a dress only a hooker would wear. He actually thinks this fake party was for me to announce my engagement to that knuckle dragging slob Dom Genova? I would rather be dead than let that filthy slob ever touch me. Gino thinks if I married into the Genova Family, he could take over their business and take all of their millions, that bastard would sell his soul to the devil for money, he is so greedy. Gino Amato is a higher up made man in the New Jersey Mob. He controls most of all the government paving and concrete projects, in and around northern New Jersey, parts of New York, and Pennsylvania. He is also reputed into Drugs, Prostitution, and loan Sharking. Angela the youngest of three children, Her brother Anthony, moved to Nevada to play Baseball, her older sister Gina, got out as soon as she turned eighteen, she joined the Marine corps, knowing Gino could not contaminate her there. The all hated the terrible way Gino treated their mother. Philomena, a beautiful lady with the classical features of an aristocratic goddess.

Every one calls her Phil, short for her given name. Unfortunately, after bearing three children, she became addicted to prescription drugs, supplied by her own husband. Whom she so loved dearly. She is now an empty shell of once was a wonderful mother. At one time she was renowned for her fabulous parties and entertainment expertise. Now she is just a pretty canary in a gilded cage. She does have her own cars, a Cadillac and a Buick SUV with a driver, all the money she can spend, but it’s all wasted. Angela hates her for what she became, almost as much as she hates Gino.

She has been planning this escape for a long time, she thought she might do it when she was in college, but her courage failed. When she realized Gino would find her. She could not go to the University she wanted, because her High School sweetheart. Bobby Madison Whom Gino hated and swore he would kill him, attended school there. Gino forced her to go to St. Mary’s college in Maryland, far from Philadelphia. Where Bobby Madison went to Villanova. When she graduated and wanted to be an elementary school teacher, he screwed up those plans, more in retaliation for her older sisters joining the Military. He more or less threatened to harm her Mother if Angela did not work for him, she knew he would do it so she just abided and prayed for guidance.

Taking her Mother for her scheduled hospital appointment, she was not surprised when the Oncology Surgeon told her. That Philomina had less than a few months to live. That’s when Angela and Barbara started making plans to leave the country. Both girls had more money than they could spend in a lifetime. Angela’s Grandfather left her and her Brother and sister tremendous amounts in trust funds that made millions of dollars. Barbara’s people were fortunate to have a lot of old money, made in the time of the Robber Barons, Barbara would never have to work for a living. She has a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and Architecture, from the University of Pennsylvania, she spends her time when not with Angela, in Museums and Historical places. So she was happy to go on this flight, to where ever they landed, Barbara is an unusual person for she is what is called HSP a highly sensitive person. Her sense of smell is far beyond that of a normal person, She is aware of subtle nuances, like changes in attitudes, moods, and personality differences. She knows if a person is happy, sad, afraid or troubled, hostile or friendly, also tastes, all by just being in their presence. That is why she is so happy to get them both out of harms way. Barbara truly loves Angela like she never loved anyone as much. Her only drawback is wondering if she is gay. All thru high school and college, she never witnessed or participated in any gay social interaction. Both Families are as straight as the culture in and around Newark dictated, This was the early seventies, and Catholicism prevailed in the areas both girls associated in.

Angela hated to leave the beautiful old and stately Mansion left to her Mother’s family, and eventually appropriated by that evil Gino, Her Great Grandfather started out with a pushcart, selling fruits and vegetables at fifteen years old. The astute and entrepreneurial young man became a millionaire by the time he was twenty-one years old. Assuring the Family’s financial position far into the future.

It made no difference to Barbara where they went, their family is the complete opposite. They loved Barbara, her Brother Billy and Billy’s wife Gwen. Formerly Gwen Jones. Barbara is ecstatic just to be able to spend her time day and night with her beloved Angela. Barbara did not date much, she seemed to have little interest in the opposite sex. If it be known, she probably dated only a dozen times in her life. She was not a virgin, it happened one time when too many bottles of wine were consumed .The music of Saturday Nite Fever and the disco gyrations of John Travolta and his sexy partner, gave way to the temptations of nude bodies.

    CHAPTER TWO

Barbara drove them as fast as she dared, she did not want to be pulled over by the local police, for Gino would know in a minute. She drove the family Lincoln to the back of their also large and stately home, in the garage waiting for them was a new GMC Tahoe truck that Barbara has just purchased yesterday. Telling no one what she did. They quickly loaded all the luggage which consisted of only two roll about airline type suitcases, and their purses, containing enough cash to last a month or better, and their passports. Five minutes later they were headed to the Delaware Water Gap leading in to Pennsylvania and up route 81 to Canada.

Did you take all the batteries out of all your electronics, asked Angela? Of course I did, do you think I am an asshole Barbara almost shouted. Immediately regretting raising her voice against her soulmate. I am sorry, I didn’t mean that as it came out. I guess I am a little nervous too. Barbara’s heart jumped when Angela reached over and squeezed her thigh saying don’t worry we will be out of here soon and we can relax a little. She wished she could believe herself. Listen sweetie said Barbara why don’t you push your seat back and try to get some sleep, I know the way thru these Pocono mountains, me and Billy came here fishing a lot. I will keep to the speed limits so the Pennsylvania Troopers don’t pull us over. There is a seat warmer on the side near the door, it will keep your tush nice and toasty if it gets too cold. I know it’s only the first of May, but it gets cold in these mountains at night. It was late afternoon when they reached the New York and Pennsylvania border, Angela had been sleeping for almost three hours, wake up sleepyhead said Barbara we have to stop for gas and I have to use the bathroom, me too said Angela. They crossed from Pa. into the small town of Binghamton New York. There that looks like a nice diner we can get some coffee and a sandwich, use the lady’s room and be on our way. Are you sure said Angela with some trepidation in her voice I am not hungry maybe we should just stop at a gas station, fill up, use the lady’s and keep on trucking? Any thing you want dearie, we can almost reach the Canadian border, by ten or eleven tonight, that way I know nobody will bother us, they are all rushing around like the dumb assess they are thinking we are still in Jersey. It feels good to be away from those people said Barbara.

Barbara this is a nice truck, four doors and all. What made you trade in your Corvette for this beauty? Think about it, who would think two girls would be driving a pick-up truck, instead of a sports or luxury car? It’s my way of rebelling against certain men and their phony Male Macho Ego kind of thing. Most of these cretins think all females can’t make a decision without her boy friend or husband to make a deal for herself? Almost getting angry, she said. I say screw them, I know what I want and can go out and get it without some idiot with a penis telling me I made a mistake. Now I wish you would relax, adjust the seat and lie back, listen to some of these music CDs I brought. I plan to get us close to the Canadian border as possible before it gets too dark.

Barbara, Angela with a warm and sincere glow on her face said. I should have said this before, thank you for being here for me and taking this journey. I don’t think I would have had the courage to do this on my own. You don’t think anyone is following us do you? No way, I would have picked up a tail long ago. My brother Billy taught me about survival and driving techniques, right after he got out of the Army, he spent ten years as a Ranger, he is very brave and super smart. I will miss him the most. I didn’t tell you, because you had too much to worry about, but your brother Anthony and Billy met with me last night. They put two and two together and knew we were going to get away. They had me take all the batteries out of all my electronics, even my cell phone. Anthony did the same to all your electronics also. While you slept, I took your cell phone and did the same. Gino may have put tracking devices in all our stuff, but Billy is a lot smarter than him. He shut down any GPS units or tracking devices, We are all right, no one we know has an idea where we are. Billy bought me this throw away phone, no one has the number but him and me, so I can call him when we get to wherever we end up.

Where the hell is my phone? Right here silly, Barbara had it in the crevice between the seats. You can’t use it the battery is gone. When did Anthony my Brother get back to Newark? Two days ago, I called him as soon as Barbara told me about your Mother. Why didn’t he come to see me? He said Gino would wonder why Anthony was here, and figure out your plans, and Anthony left just before we got out of Newark. He knows when you are settled and happy he will come to you, but for now he said he will lay low. But he did say he would get in touch with your sister in the Marine Corps, and let her know you are away from Newark and all the bullshit?

Oh shit Barbara, I left my watch back on my dresser? Don’t worry about it, Gino probably has it sabotaged anyway? Oh Barbara I feel so bad my grandmother gave me that watch when I graduated high school. It has all those diamonds and emeralds. My Great Grandfather gave it to her over a hundred years ago, it was made by the guy who made those Russian eggs. No kidding I didn’t know that. If it is real Peter Carl Faberge, that watch may be worth millions? Maybe when and if I talk to Billy he might be able to rescue it at a later date, when all the idiocy dies down? No if he was caught in the house Gino would kill him, don’t worry about it.If that bastard put something in my personal stuff, maybe I should throw away my whole suitcase. I would not put it past that miserable bitch to have something put in my Inter Uterine Device? I know that is a stretch but I know how that bastard thinks. Barba almost laughed out loud, I don’t think he went so far, but she was not totally convinced herself.

From the small town in Southern Tier New York State, they drove straight north at ten that evening they had reached the Town of Plattsburgh New York. Driving under the Porte Cochere Best Western Motel. Barbara jostled Angela, wake up sleepy head.

Where are we, how long did I sleep? Jesus it’s cold here, where is my sweater, as she reached in the back seat? Just then the bellhop knocked on the passenger window, Angela screamed what the hell. Both windows rolled down the bellhop asked. Are you lady’s staying here, and may I take your luggage?

Yes we are said Barbara I phoned ahead four hours earlier, for reservations. The Plattsburgh Best Western, is one of the better hotels Barbara googled, and made the decision to stay there. For it is near the Canadian border, and only eighty or so miles to Montreal? We can sleep late, have a leisurely breakfast (Although in Angela’s case we shall see what develops) arrive in Montreal in the early afternoon and find the very best hotel available?

May third and the weather was cooperating with their plans. The temperature hovered around fifty to sixty degrees, with a light breeze coming off the Saint Lawrence River. Making things as pleasant as a person could want. For they had made it to Montreal and The Fairfield Inn. The next morning, Barbara and Angela sitting on the balcony outside their suite were just starting to enjoy the wonderful coffee and danish, letting Newark fade into a forgotten dream. Their reverie was broken when Barbara’s phone started playing the standard bell tone. DAMMIT BARBARA you were supposed to take all the batteries out of your phone? Don’t get all pissed of she said, remember this is the throw away phone Billy gave me only he is the only one who has the number. Sweetheart you are getting a little paranoid, PARANOID, what the hell you are not the one who would have to sleep with that caveman. My whole freaking life is on the line here, so we can’t let any of those pricks know where we are or where we are going? Get dressed now and pack up we are going right to the airport? Her face was red she is so furious with Barbara We are doing any sight seeing or Museum hopping, make sure your passport is handy. Looking right in Barbara’s eyes she asked what’s the matter did you not hear me.? She said it’s my brother Billy and his wife Gwen. What’s the matter Barbara? They are downstairs in the lobby, and want to talk to us right now, Angela felt her heart drop straight thru to her toes. She thought for sure she would vomit. Scared to the point of thoughtlessness, she said tell them to come on up, hoping no one else was with them?

Checking thru the peephole, Barbara verified it is indeed Billy and Gwen she unhooked the key chain and opened
