Sid Diddlehopper and the Flat Face Fairy - Francois LeMae
Chapter One - The Journey
People who caught a glimpse of Sid were never sure what they had just seen. Some thought they had seen a frog, but frogs didn’t walk on two feet, wear baggy coveralls or carry a lunchbox. Others thought maybe it was a child in a costume with an impish smile, but wondered how could one appear and disappear so quickly?
Was this an illusion? Did they wake from a daydream? A blinking of the eyes, a shaking of the head, and a closer look revealed nothing. With a warm feeling of amusement and a chuckle they imagined themselves having a silly thought and went about their day. For anyone fortunate enough to share this vision, they forever found themselves more attentive, more in tune with what was going on around them. A gift had been given.
The other creatures of the world were not alarmed by Sid’s presence. They felt no danger or fear, but a great curiosity. Sid would then speak to them in the kindest of words. This seemed matter of fact to even the fiercest of animals so they spoke back to him with no thoughts of harm, (or lunch). As such, many wild things of the fields and forests were aware of Sid and some were old friends.
Sid was a most unusual creature, a mystery of the world with his own wonderful peculiarities. He often napped during the day. Dark nights were nothing more to him than a tranquil twilight waiting to greet a new sun. Sid’s smile was perpetual and deepened with the kindness of his eyes. He greeted others with humming or a soft chuckle. Despite his diminutive size his voice was surprisingly deep and mellow.
Sid loved to walk and his journeys took him most often to places where help was needed. A sad or angry thought became a fleeting one when Sid was nearby. Arguments would become friendly conversations, tears would change to laughter, and the sun would rise on a better tomorrow.
How all this happened was unknown. Sid simply walked though the countryside and the troubles of others would find him in the most unusual ways. On one such day, actually the very last day of summer, a calling came from the sky above. Sid was napping under a shade tree at the edge of a meadow when he awoke to a loud voice.
Chirp, chirp, chirp... you cannot be sleeping when one is weeping. Chirp, chirp, chirp... wake up dear Sid.
A magnificent bird was circling overhead. It was Lithe Feather. She wore a small golden crown that sparkled in the sunlight. In the small of her back, just above a streaming tail of colorful feathers, nestled a bouquet of flowers. Her songs were sweet melodies, but her chirping now was laced with a tone of alarm.
Sid sat up and stretched away his sleepiness as Lithe Feather stretched her wings to land on an overhanging limb nearby. She cocked her head and looked at Sid with a single discerning eye.
Yawning he softly asked, "Why to worry
