P rofessor Giles stood at the doorway of Observation Chamber 11-B, papers in hand. His wrinkled fingers ran over the crisp documents as if to skim through the contents of his notes, but he has done this so many times before that he could not be bothered anymore. Same shit, different day, Giles thought. His coat reeked of disinfectant odour, that ever-prominent hospital smell
from spending so much time down here. He had spent the last decade in this godforsaken place, enduring failure after failure, so much so that he had almost become immune to the cruelty being inflicted on his test subjects. Almost.
Experiment Number 107 is about to commence shortly, sir
, said his assistant from behind, wearing her usual outfit of a white coat overlaying a tight, dark blouse underneath coupled with jeans and polished black heels. Professor Giles turned and stared at her blankly. Poor girl, he thought. She was a prospect doctor with a young, brilliant mind. She was originally going to be a surgeon in the renowned Newcastle Freeman Hospital, before she was diverted to her current job as Giles’s assistant. Such a shame she’s stuck here in this shithole with me, Giles remarked in his head.
Giles waved his hands in approval and his assistant nodded her head, before ordering the personnel in the room to proceed with the experiment. She nervously adjusted her coat in preparation for what she is about to witness, as this was only her fourth week on the job. In contrast, Giles stared nonchalantly at the large one-way glass window ahead of him. He had seen too much messed-up stuff at this point, even that movie about tying human anuses together to form a centipede wouldn’t phase him anymore. The signal sounded and the heavy steel doors of the experimentation chamber closed, locking the test subject inside and drowning out her pleas for help. Two large mechanical arms with six needles each came down upon the table the subject was restrained onto, hovering right above her arms. A computer monitor in the observation chamber showed signs of elevated heart rate.
Subject 107’s vital signs are normal, sir. Ready to proceed.
, said one of the personnel. Carry on
, Giles responded. The mechanical arms lowered on the subject’s arms and the needles pierced her skin, inducing a scream of agony to emanate from her mouth. The assistant flinched and looked away. After what seemed like an eternity, the subject finally stopped screaming, either due to the sedatives administered or the fact she probably destroyed her voice box from days of yelling. Her screams turned into soft whimpers and her words became unintelligible. Her eyelids lowered and her eyes dimmed while her clenched hands relaxed. The colour from
