Chase had never been so down on his luck. First the shipping job he’d dragged his vintage ship to the edge of settled space for hardly paid enough for the fuel home, and then right after he fueled up at this seedy little space outpost, the warp drive wouldn’t power up.

If there was one thing an independent pilot like Chase was used to, it was doing his own mechanical repairs. He’d been so sure he could slap a patch on it, at least until he got back to a bigger spaceport. Luck really wasn’t in the mood today, though. Chase quickly assessed that the problem wasn’t repairable—the ship needed an entirely new part, one that cost around 16,000 credits.

That was 15,995 more credits than he currently had.

Just a beer, Chase told the tentacled Eld-hi bartender hopelessly. Fuck his life, he couldn’t even afford to get drunk right now.

As he took a swig of the beer he’d just been handed, the pilot felt an appraising gaze on his back. There was that prickle in the back of his mind that somebody was watching him. Chancing a glance over his shoulder, he caught two powerfully built Marjon men checking him out. They were sitting at a little round table back in the corner away from the bar. Both had just finished dinner, judging by their empty plates.
