    Introduction

Study is the application of our mental faculties to acquire knowledge. In order to do this we first need to understand what we are studying and then organize it in our mind.

W.A. Kelly (cf. Kelly W A: Psychology of Education, Madrid, 1964, pp 304-308) says that the purpose of study is to acquire facts and information, different ways of thinking, dominion of abilities and specific techniques through which we are able to organize and express our knowledge.

Study is, therefore, a process of the intelligence through which we acquire universal ideas, that is, ideas which can be applied to different cases, such as the laws of Physics, Chemistry or Economics. The consequence is that study allows us to apply those general laws or ideas to practical aspects, such as making a car, soap or money.

Study is both a work of the intelligence and of the .will. Our intelligence seeks the truth: we have a natural desire to know what happens inside our bodies, to find out what provoked the Second World War, or to know why animals behave in a particular way. Our will, on the other hand, wants good things, although to acquire them may demand an effort. We study because we see it is good for us, because to acquire knowledge is good, because many good things will come out of it, not only in terms of money, career, profession, etc. but also in personal terms: through study we improve our personality, we develop our potential. Intelligence and will are related. Although we may see with our intelligence that to study is good, this is not enough; the will has to act and say: I want to study. On the other hand, although someone may want to study a particular subject, he may not have the ability to do so.

In any case, there is no magic formula to pass examinations or to learn, but work. We know that even the most brilliant person has to undertake a minimum amount of study.

    Chapter I: Guidance in Study

Education experts have pointed out that deterioration in school work is a common problem when children reach adolescence. Although not all students are affected to the same extent, they have pointed out the following reasons for this deterioration:

    * students may be lacking the basic understanding of some subjects

    * their study methods may not have been good

    * education at primary level may have been deficient

    * teenage crisis may have affected them deeply

    * the study atmosphere at home and in school may not have been conducive to learning.

Some of the above points are explained in the following pages.
