ABSTRACT
This book is the brainchild of interdisciplinary collaboration between experts in the field of rheumatology and orthopaedics. The multifunctional hand plays such an important role in day-to-day life, to an extent where a slight deviation from its normal function may lead to disability. Understanding hand anatomy is essential to identify the causes of its dysfunction. Thus, we start by introducing the basic anatomy of the hand by recognising its bones and various important tendons of the fingers. The sections of this book then expand its coverage of rheumatology by enlightening readers with the mechanics and pathophysiology of deformities associated with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, scleroderma, gouty arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
The orthopaedic section compliments this book with the various interventional modalities of hand and wrist pathologies. A true highlight of this book is a fully illustrated section on detailed physical examination of the hand. The concise examination techniques featured here will come in handy during patient consultations and also assist exam candidates to prepare for their short case stations. This section also includes real case images of classical clinical features and varied manifestations of respective hand and wrist disorders which are commonly encountered in medical practice. These high-quality images provide long-lasting visual memory of subtle diagnostic cues and at the same time help improve one’s ability to make a bedside diagnosis. We have also included various images of orthopaedic surgical procedures which can be an excellent supplement to clinical case-based teaching.
Finally, we take a look into the role of radiology in the diagnosis of hand and wrist disorders and learn to
