Chapter 1
The three ran toward the door, it was time to go home, the three had a fair day, it could have been better, but beggars as they say can’t be choosy. As they sprinted and scurried toward the exit home, Bobby thought, something was missing, he wasn’t content with what he had, plus, he wasn’t content going back home with his hands half full, or half empty. He turned to walk toward the door with such a swagger, he said, yo, I can’t leave without that prize.
You can see the hunger in his eyes, he continued, I bring that back, yo, I’ll be the head, the next dog in charge, I’ll be getting mad respect and attention, top dog.
He thought as his imagination was going wild, as he continued, I’ll be carving out my own legacy.
Tommy said with concern, And if you fail kid, you be history, listen Bobby…
He shook his shoulders to snap him out of this dream, listen Bobby, it’s to risky, so we didn’t do as well as we thought, so what, we picked the wrong turf, there be another…
Bobby stood there, time was slipping away quickly, they had to go before their presence is discovered, Bobby protest, No. there was the opportunity and when opportunity knocks my friend, you better answer. You may wait but if you wait to late, you lose out, you could lose your destiny of success just because you was to undecided, to unsure, to uncertain and that un in the beginning of the word means, you lose out and so does everyone that is depending on you Tommy,
Bobby stomped his feet, No, that prize is mine, it belongs to me, it is my destiny to have it, it’s been waiting for me, well I’m here. Bobby, hurried toward the door, Tommy ran in front of him,
Bobby, don’t do it, not tonight, another time Bobby, another night Bobby, I don’t like the feeling I have in my chest. Bobby grabbed Tommy, Jesse was nervous,
stop it, no fighting, no fighting… Bobby gave Tommy a warning look,
another night, you like to put off stuff Tommy, you realize this is a hotspot, word has been circulating and here it is and here we are, and you want to what? Run huh, high tail so the road dogs could take it or the mighty ants, those blood sucking punks, nah man, my opportunity, my spoil, my crown jewel, my reputation can be propelled for the next ten years, yo, I will be a legend, a folklore in the community and other communities.
He grabbed Tommy in excitement, can’t you see what this means, huh.
Tommy nodded his head, yeah, the I in you gets bigger Bobby that’s all, it is all centered around you Bobby, but you keep forgetting we are a community, a group Bobby, a family, we work together.
Bobby waved a dismissive hand, yeah yeah, and guess what, winter is coming kid and guess what little is in the store house. I over heard the leaders talking the other night and they are concern whether we will get through this winter.
Tommy looking concern said, "really, every year we go through this same thing and every year they talk about the same thing, will we have enough to survive the winter, Bobby responded, well, I’ll be a rat’s uncle if I’m going to beg, borrow or steal from any of those cheap crumb grabbers for a piece of bread, I don’t think so , I’m out.
Tommy made one more attempt, and how about Jesse huh.
Bobby stopped and turned and looked at his little niece, he cursed to himself, he said under his breath, baggage.
Jessica, they call her Jesse looked at him with those huge brown eyes, two cute huge gum drops looking back at him, he said in an apologetic tone, not you baby…I was…anyway…
He looked at Tommy, Tommy looked at him with a slight smile. Bobby nodded his head as if to say, ‘you got that one. Bobby thought and said,
okay I got it, this won’t take long at all, you and Jesse wait here and I’ll be back with the gold. His eyes gleamed. Tommy thought and shook his head,
nah, not cool… Bobby stomped his foot,
ahh, c’mon Tommy work with me dude. Tommy nodded his head,
I am, that is why I’m going with you… Bobby could not believe his ears,
hold up, you’re going with me. Tommy nodded his head,
yep, that is what I said, you heard right. Bobby said,
alright, cool. With excitement, and as he was running toward the door, he put on the brakes, he said,
No, no, no! Tommy looked at him,
what! C’mon let’s do it, c’mon man. Tommy was excited going on and on until Bobby raised his voice over Tommy’s pre-celebrative moment,
we can’t… Tommy stopped in mid praise and looked at Bobby,
say what, come again. Bobby’s attitude deflated, his own idea,
we can’t. Tommy looked confused,
but? Bobby said,
but nothing, we can’t, we have Jesse with us remember. Jessica looked at both of them and said,
look I’m not a baby okay, so don’t treat me as such okay, I can do this, c’mon guys. Bobby smiled and walked up to her,
you have guts my little friend, you are bad to the bone baby girl, you have ice running in your veins. He mushed her fur and smiled and said,
ah, but no, Tommy is right, another time, another place baby girl okay. Tommy was okay with it,
no worries there will be plenty times to come. Bobby tried to leave it but couldn’t,
listen, I… have to do this. You guys stay right here, I’ll be back…if something goes wrong, if I don’t get back, get out, you hear me Tommy, take Jessica and get out. Tommy didn’t like that,
nah bro I’m going, thick or thin I’m with you to the end bro, whether you like it or not. He bent slightly down to his sister,
Jesse, next time we go, you can come, but for now stay right here and your uncle Bobby and I will be right back before you can say, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious okay. Jessica let out slight laugh, she didn’t like the idea of waiting, but it was probably best listening to her brother and uncle, caution and safety first, she nodded,
okay…but hurry. Bobby and Tommy bent down to hug Jessica. Bobby stood up,
like I said, you have ice running in your veins. Bobby and Tommy excitement was coming back, they both said yes slapping each other high five. Bobby said with adventurous eyes,
and now for the crown jewel." They slapped each other five again and took off.
Chapter 2
Jessica was pretending she was a super hero, a spy, pretending to be spying on her enemy called the cat dog as she ran and flipped and tumble Sault, pretending she had a weapon. She aimed and pretended she shot, pow, pow, pow, got cha cat dog. There is a new sheriff in town and it’s…
She stopped, something was wrong, something was absolutely wrong she thought, she can sense it. She tried to call her brother and nephew but to no avail. Whatever she sensed, whatever she thought was wrong was coming closer to her, she started to run, but which way. Her father use to tell her of all the booby traps and to be wise and careful.
Chapter 3
Bobby was ready to make that heist, when Tommy heard something. Bobby was humming a song. Tommy told him to, hold up for a minute,
shush, wait…I thought I heard… Tommy listen carefully,
you heard it? Bobby smiled,
yeah I heard it too…what’s that song our neighbor plays…ahh, we will, we will rock you. Bobby smiled. Tommy shook his head,
no seriously Bobby, I heard what sounded like… He stopped with a look of panic on his face. Bobby was about to snatched the golden egg, the prize which he spent hours planning to snatch, it was right in front of him for the taking. Bobby inhale and exhale with a slight smile, this was easier than what he had thought. Tommy was still trying to figure out what was that sound, and then it hit him like a ton of bricks, as he let out a scream filled with panic and fear, he said,
that’s Jesse."
Chapter 4
Jessica was running, ducking, jumping and screaming, moving as fast as her little feet could move. She learned from the elders, when someone is on your tail go into offensive maneuvers, weave and zig zag, be alert, look out for every opportunity to escape. Keep your eyes open for exits and openings and keep in mind how small the hole is, she was told she could fit in any hole, find it and get to it. She was running for her life, but her enemy was quick, if not quicker, she was smart but her enemy seemed smarter, he seemed to know where she was going to run before she did. She was getting exhausted, frustrated, it seemed as if her enemy had the upper hand, he was toying with her, she could feel his sharp claws swapping at her nipping her, knocking her off balance, distracting her, as she crashed into some bottles. She could sense the game for him was no longer a game, he was tired of playing and chasing, she yelled and scream, pleaded and begged, she screamed for her uncle and brother, her mommy and daddy, anyone who has always been there for her, but it was to no avail, the big cat wouldn’t relent, as he cornered her, no where to run, no where to hide, no small openings or cracks to sneak into or squeeze in or go through, no refuge, every place that had an opening was sealed up. She came to the realization this was a mistake, as the big mean cat came closer, the cat snarl, what are you doing here…
He sniffed the air and looked down at her, mmm, missy, what are you doing here in my turf, huh…
Jessica knew it was futile to explain herself, the four foot beast, the ultimate enemy of the mouse had already made up its mind, he was the judge, jury and the executioner.
Jessica said with her voice shaking, I made a wrong turn, I thought this was a quicker way home.
The big cat looked at her and smack her, she yelped from the surprise smack. She tried to make a run for it but he was so quick, he leaned and place his heavy solid paw on her neck. Jessica cried out, the big beast roared, liar. You little liar.
He snarled as his saliva dripped down from its mouth onto her tiny body, he said, I should rip your head off, no your legs and watch you slowly breathe your last breath just for lying to me. Jessica’s heart was racing, you can see it as she laid still. She didn’t know what to do, she couldn’t think, the thing had the advantage, the beast was bigger, stronger and smarter and faster, he said with an evil smile,
shall we try this again, huh. Jessica was so nervous she started, the big mean cat said,
you better not croak on me, I just want to eat that fine brain of yours. Jessica looked at him with disgust, he smiled with that evil smile,
hey, it’s a delicacy, now talk, where are the others and don’t lie to me missy because I know you guys travel in packs, so where are they. The beast came closer to Jessica and she could smell that smell her parents told her about, when you smell that run, find a place to hide…well the hiding part was to late. Jessica cried out loud, the cat looked around,
shut up or I’ll shut you up," as the big mean cat growled in her ear.
Chapter 5
ILLUSTRATION_4.jpgBobby dropped the prize, the big chunk of cheese from his hand as it went into the mouse trap, he didn’t even see the trap, he heard that snapping sound coming down on that huge chunk of cheese, that was supposed to have been him. He looked down at Tommy, thanks a lot Tommy, we just lost our prize.
Tommy said in frustration, we lost our cheese but saved our necks, I don’t care about some old piece of cheese, Jessica is in trouble.
Bobby looked at him in panic, what!
Tommy said, I heard her distress call, Bobby she’s in real trouble
Bobby looked at him and looked at the other spots where there was more hidden treasures, he cursed and jumped down, dog gone it tommy, I was this close, this close.
Tommy said well, so close yet so far, or better the thrill of victory…
Bobby finished the sentence, And the agony of defeat.
Tommy nodded, okay, fine, we need to get our feet moving or we really going to feel the agony.
Bobby urgently looked at Tommy and asked, which way the sound came from.
Tommy shrugged his shoulders in frustration, "I don’t know,
