Wings of Thought: Contemporary Greek and Philhellene Poetry

This anthology is a five-year retrospective of poetry readings at A POETS ‘AGORA, a literary association in Athens, Greece. The poets who have read at the event, or have been part of the residency program share with the readers their poems in relation to the theme of the year. These theme-words capture the zeitgeist of Greece; Muted in 2015, Lull in 2016, Graft in 2017, Risk in 2018 and Verge in 2019. The poems are in Greek and English. The international poetry evenings, and the residency, take place in a neoclassical building at the foothills of the Acropolis, graced with frescoes that illustrate this publication. The poets are gathered along criteria of diversity and originality, as they belong to different currents of the rich Greek poetic spectrum. Together they gift readers with an authentic outline of contemporary voices, opening a path for students and researchers, or poetry lovers around the world, to receive a unique perspective on this artform.

Karine Leno Ancellin

Karine Leno Ancellin was born and grew up in New York City. She earned an MA, with Honours, in Literature at the Charles V Institute of Paris VII; and worked on ‘Hybrid identities’ for her PhD at the Vrije Universiteit of Brussels. She worked as a journalist covering the Sahara region from Mauritania, in the early 90s, and was based as a ‘development’ correspondent from Brussels in 2000. She has been living in Athens for the past 6 years. She is a professor of literature, editor, writer and translator and has recently authored a poetry collection, The Missing Angle, published by Riza Press in December 2019. She is founder and director of A Poets’ Agora. Angela Lyras was born in New York to a Greek seafaring family from the islands of Chios. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and the New School for Social Research, and then lived and worked in London for several years before returning to New York to work as Executive Assistant, in the early 90s, at The Institute of Contemporary Art/ PS1 Museum (now Moma/PS1). In 1991, she co-directed with artist Nicola Tyson, a Manhattan Soho-based contemporary arts project space for women, Trial Balloon, until 1994. Since then she shares her time between New York and Athens. She is co-founder and co-director of A Poets’ Agora, her Greek home also being the site where a Poets’ Agora Residency and events are held.

Ανταποκρινόμενη στο αίτημα να κάνω μερικά σχόλια για να προετοιμάσω τους αναγνώστες, τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό, θα ήθελα να μοιραστώ τα συναισθήματα και τις σκέψεις μου σχετικά με το ρόλο του ποιητή στην «αγορά» σε συζητήσεις για σύγχρονα κοινωνικά και πολιτικά θέματα. Σήμερα, η «αγορά» υποδηλώνει ένα χώρο με καταστήματα, αλλά την εποχή του Σωκράτη σήμαινε ένα χώρο όπου γίνονταν συζητήσεις για σύγχρονα ζητήματα και ανταλλαγή γενικότερων ιδεών. Πώς ανήκει ένας ποιητής στην Αγορά;

Για τους Έλληνες, όπως κι εγώ, η φράση «Η Αγορά των Ποιητών» προκαλεί ένα μοναδικό, περίπλοκο συναίσθημα που πιθανόν να μην μπορούν να βιώσουν όσοι δεν είναι Έλληνες. Αφενός, η φράση υπενθυμίζει την υπερηφάνεια που μοιραζόμαστε για την κληρονομιά της σημαντικής ποίησης ξεκινώντας από τον Όμηρο. Αυτή η υπερηφάνεια φαίνεται να είναι μέρος του εθνικού μας χαρακτήρα, και έτσι δύσκολα μπορεί να μοιραστεί με ανθρώπους διαφορετικών εθνικοτήτων, φαινομενικά δίνοντας στους ποιητές περισσότερο δικαίωμα να μιλούν για κοινωνικά θέματα. Αφετέρου, υπάρχει μια αίσθηση πίεσης που αισθανόμαστε να δημιουργήσουμε ξανά σπουδαία ποίηση, ενώ ταυτόχρονα κάνουμε τις φωνές μας να ακούγονται στη σύγχρονη αγορά, επειδή τα κοινωνικά ζητήματα είναι τόσο σημαντικά. Στην Ελλάδα, σε σύγκριση με άλλες χώρες όπως η Αμερική, καθώς οι ποιητές και οι συγγραφείς συχνά δεν έχουν πανεπιστημιακές θέσεις, η τέχνη τους δεν περιορίζεται σε μια ακαδημαϊκή δραστηριότητα αλλά ανήκει στην ευρύτερη κοινότητα όπου ζουν. Οι άνθρωποι επιθυμούν να γνωρίζουν τι σκέφτονται οι συγγραφείς και οι φιλόσοφοι.

Όταν οι ποιητές κάνουν τις φωνές τους να ακουστούν, τι κάνουν; Κατά τη γνώμη μου, η δημιουργική τέχνη δίνει τη δυνατότητα στους ποιητές να καταγράψουν τον παλμό της καρδιάς των κοινοτήτων στις οποίες ζουν — να μετρήσουν τον σφυγμό της, αργό ή γρήγορο, σταθερό ή ασταθή, αδύναμο ή δυνατό. Και με αυτόν τον τρόπο οι ποιητές δίνουν φωνή στους συμπολίτες τους που μπορεί να μην έχουν πλήρη συνειδητότητα των συναισθημάτων τους ή δεν έχουν φωνή και πρόσβαση στην Αγορά. Όταν οι άνθρωποι αντιλαμβάνονται τα συναισθήματά τους είναι καλύτερα εξοπλισμένοι για να αποφασίσουν για το μέλλον. Όλες οι φωνές μαζί αντιπροσωπεύουν την κοινωνία καλύτερα από κάθε μία μεμονωμένη φωνή.

Στην Αγορά, εμείς οι ποιητές δεν είμαστε απλώς ουδέτεροι ανταποκριτές των συναισθημάτων των άλλων ανθρώπων. Μιλάμε για σύγχρονα κοινωνικά ζητήματα με βάση τις αξίες που ορίζονται από την ποίηση — ανθρωπιστικές και καλλιτεχνικές. Αυτές οι αξίες χρωματίζουν τις κοινωνικές καταστάσεις με συναισθήματα, με θετικές ή αρνητικές αξιολογήσεις. Ποιες είναι αυτές οι ποιητικές αξίες; Ποια είναι τα κοινωνικά και πολιτικά ζητήματα; Στα ποιήματα που ακολουθούν θα τα ανακαλύψετε και θα τα αφήσετε να σας επηρεάσουν.

Για αυτήν την ευκαιρία να συμμετάσχω στην «Αγορά των Ποιητών», εκ μέρους των συναδέλφων μου ποιητών, του κοινού και των μελλοντικών αναγνωστών, θα ήθελα να εκφράσω την ειλικρινή μου ευγνωμοσύνη στην Καρήν Λένο Ανσελλίν και την Άντζελα Λύρα.

FOREWORD

Asked to write a few comments to prepare readers, both Greek and international, I would like to share my feelings and thoughts about the role of the poet in the agora: in discussions of contemporary social and political issues. Today, the agora suggests a marketplace, but at the time of Socrates it suggested a place where contemporary issues were discussed, and more general ideas were exchanged. How does a poet belong to the Agora?

For Greek people, such as myself, the phrase A Poets’ Agora evokes a unique, complex feeling that non-Greeks may not be able to experience. On the one hand, the phrase brings to mind the pride we share in the heritage of great poetry starting with Homer. This pride seems to be a part of our national character, and thus can hardly be shared with people of different nationalities, seemingly giving poets more rights to speak about social issues. On the other hand, there is a sense of pressure we feel to create great poetry again while also making our voices heard in the contemporary Agora because social issues are so important. In Greece, compared to other countries such as America, since the poets and writers often do not have university positions, their art is not limited to an academic activity but belongs to the greater community where they live. People want to know what writers and philosophers think.

When poets make their voices heard, what are they doing? In my view, creative art qualifies poets to record the heartbeat of the communities in which they live – to take its pulse, slow or fast, steady or unsteady, weak or strong. And in so doing poets give voice to their fellow citizens who might not be fully aware of their own feelings, or do not have voice and access to the Agora. When people are conscious of their feelings, they are better equipped to decide about the future. All the voices together represent society better than any individual voice alone could.

In the Agora, we poets are not just neutral reporters of other people’s feelings. We speak about contemporary social issues based on the values prescribed by
