DEDICATION
In memoriam I want to dedicate this book of heroes’ stories to my
late husband, Commander Richard R. Brydges. What I thought
would be a forthright effort is now far more difficult than I
could have ever envisioned, as I attempted to summarize in this
short space what a genuinely wonderful husband, father, friend,
gentleman, and Navy officer Rick was—despite his facing a series
of long-term challenges most individuals could not endure.
Rick encompassed every quality and trait that makes for a truly
good man.
He was intelligent, compassionate, loving, and
dedicated by any measure. Moreover, Rick was the love of
my life—and he will be always. He was a cherished comrade,
and he was respected by everyone with whom he came in
contact. Comparisons to Rick R. Brydges simply cannot be
made as he stood out as a steadfast role model for others.
He was truly a "…Sequoia among the pines…."
His Loving Wife, Carolyn Brydges

FOREWORD
MAJ Jon M. Corey, PhD
No one can speak about the souls of the men who served in the Vietnam War except those service members who actually fought on the ground, in the air, and on the sea. Only these special individuals can describe their combat experiences, affording us powerful insights into their personalities, behaviors, and morals with vivid descriptions of life-altering warfare events that remolded each man in his own crucible of combat.
Life-altering decisions and close combat actions have awe-inspiring and permanent impacts on individuals and recast the very core of every combatant, as well as their values, convictions, vulnerabilities, strengths, and perceptions. The accounts of closely contested battle situations and ultimate survival are exclusive life scenarios full of unexpected plot twists, with capture, injury or death possible consequences.
As I noted based on my experience as a professor of psychology and my citations for the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star for Valor, Air Medal for Valor, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Purple Heart, military soldiers fight with great honor, unbounded tenacity, and limitless courage primarily to defend their fellow troops—nothing is more important. Taking risks for one’s military unit and comrades and surviving are uniquely powerful, and doing so internalizes one’s thinking and loyalty on a virtually permanent basis.
In studying the accounts of harrowing battle situations and ultimate survival on the ground, in the air, and on the sea by military personnel who were undeniably transformed forever by combat, we can hope to understand how military leaders accomplish great things and appreciate what drives them and their fellow service members.
The American War Library estimates that approximately 610,000 Americans who served on land, in the air, or in the waters of Vietnam between 1954 and 1975 are alive today. Many of the life-altering, combat-intense turning points
shared by some of these armed services officers and enlisted personnel highlight these individuals’ values in providing a lasting legacy for their families and nationwide patriotic organizations via a virtual crucible of combat.
These firsthand accounts memorialize ideals based on love, loyalty, duty, and acts of transformational leadership to deal with the challenges of life, as well as principles of working together as families and comrades.
