    SUN AND WIND

In Miami, ordinary days are always victorious

And filled with the same warmness and gentleness.

The summer is endless for us –

    Fulfilled with triumph and kindness…

In the hot summer time, the King of Sun

Rules until the hurricane season –

    Taking time off for duties

And following in the footsteps of fable from Aesop –

    The Sun argues.

The mighty Wind from far seas

    Blows on trees

    And throws,

    And sways

    The branches and leaves.

    Miamians hurry indoors

    And looking for water, ice, and shelters;

    Then, barricading the homes,

And waiting and waiting for contest victors.

People try their best as the Wind might.

Every year we learn more –

    Easier influence masses

    With kindness and gentleness

    Then with force and war!

    FOREWORD

From the beach chair, outdoors, my darling young lady shields her blue eyes from the strong sunlight. She is wearing sunglasses. Fun, sun, and clear waters are calling. Just imagine – what a wonderful day could be at the ocean! Few hours, while away, taking in the fresh air and the majestic smells of the Atlantic Ocean, keep her young and energetic. Who knew that a little coffee is actually healthy, thank you, science?! Ahhh! The woman just keeps going. She has her sunshine – laughing and talking.

Nowadays, her positioning and priorities changed. The main motto is vivid: Retired from work, not from life! For many, this is the time much needed to rest, to slow down and rediscover themselves. Above all, of course, writing. The inspiration is everywhere.

The eyes observe the familiar landscape – flowers, blooming plants, sneaky lizards, and the creeping grass. The songs of birds lead to the birds. Great, she retired from her jobs, both at the office and home, and seeks adventures at time to time. O’ yes, she earned the spotlight in many ways. Now is the time to relax and have some simple fun. For Floridians, ‘sun n’ sand’ means wearing and carrying the straw hat, straw tote and other summer accessories. Of course, it is the pressure’s time for the recreational reading, self-expressions in essays and writings, and endless creativity through the easy cookery, handmade craft, and vintage goods’ appreciation.

Floridians love the beach – a place of relaxation, rest, and tranquility. The ocean waves of surfside are the perfect ambience for stress relief. The walk on the beach is a priceless beach therapy, and for some is a privilege.

People say dreams made from sand and sun… What this means? Perhaps to pursue the fullness of life – the happiness. Palm trees, ocean breeze, salty air, sun kissed hair, endless summer, take me their… (Print, 2012)

The topics of sand, sun, and staying home brought up a logical question of protection from sun and wind with the use of common fashion accessories from both the historic and geographical perspective.

Wise women know better – feeling good means looking good, and this could be translated as wisdom words of wellness. Besides, the healthy food philosophy and energy-exude exercises, women should not be afraid to take a different approach to rules of life. After all, in France, women wear bikinis until they are eighty. The goal is to heal, repair, and protect the skin from further sun damage. To protect the skin means to shield the sun to bake on human body, and to learn how to guard the body and mind.

A little breeze is a treat, but the strong winds of the hurricane seasons always should be taken seriously.

    INTRODUCTION

There is an ancient Greece fable told by Aesop, a slave and storyteller. It is believed he lived between 640 to 520 BCE. The title of the fable is The Wind and the Sun. The wind and the sun argued one day over who was stronger. Spotting a man traveled on the road, they sported a challenge to see which one could remove the coat from the man’s back the quickest. The wind blew strong gusts of air, so strong that the man could barely walk against them; so, the man clutched his coat tight against him. The wind blew harder and stronger. The harder the wind blew, the tighter the man held his coat against him. The wind blew until he was exhausted, but he could not remove the coat from the man’s back. When it was the sun’s turn, the sun gently sent his beams upon the traveler. The sun did very little, but quietly shined upon his head and back until the man became so warm that he took off his coat and headed for the nearest shade area from the tree.

These acts of Earth’s forces bring on the nature to life, and show their characteristics. From ancient times, humans protected themselves from the powerful north winds and the x-rays of sun – the skin and the body – with fundamentals of cosmetics, essential practical use of clothes, and functional fashion accessories.

Throughout the history, costume development has followed two separate lines of development, led by two contrasting types of garments. The most obvious line of division is between male and female dress code: trousers and skirts. This is true as men always have worn bifurcated clothes and women not, with some omissions.

For instant, Greeks and Romans had been worn tunics, that are figuratively saying are dresses. In the same effect, Scottish men and the modern Greeks wear skirts. Far Eastern and Near Eastern women have worn trousers, and many continue to do so. As a result, sex separation turns out not to be a true division in the world of costume’s developments.

Perhaps the most practical distinction of the dress code, in the anthropological aspect, lies in the differences between tropical and arctic dress. Therefore, the second important division factor is the geographical location. The geographical state of affairs had been a massive factor in protection the human body from the environmental conditions of sun, cold and wind. When said ‘geographical location’ what this means? It includes various climate conditions and seasonal changes in the weather condition that reflects on how people take care of their skin and bodies. What else to consider? Perhaps local national customs and local traditions such as tattoos, folk suites and ceremonial clothes, and use of local resources both for prophylactics of health issues and beautification of body.

The social history of the story in this book highlights the changing tendencies and attitudes towards human bodies, their skin and colors, the changing pattern and shades that keep humans safe, protective, and healthy; spiced up with popular gossip and subsided stories. This topic is a fascinating odd angle of social history that joins together the brief history of cosmetics and fashion trends around the world, in chronological order. It is a cross-reference story of human vanity in conjunction with a contemporary understanding of the interactions between beautiful people on our planet Earth and the various environmental conditions, from hot summer days to cold and windy winters.

Ida Tomshinsky is admirably searching in historic perspective of fringe sociology, antiques, and cultural events to find the balance between sociology and journalism, equipped with information literacy, within a long-time career
