My Favorite Colors Are Yellow and Black

Hyong Bae Oh is a young boy from North Korea who moves with his mother to New York City. His mother, whom he calls Oma, opens a grocery store in Harlem, a suburb, next to New York City, and together they begin a new life and get to know many different kinds of people.
One day, Hyong Bae Oh meets a Black girl who is the same age as he is. Her name is Zoey, and they become good friends in spite of their differences. But Oma forbids Hyong Bae Oh from playing with Zoey because she is different from them. He is sad and lonely for months without his friend. And then one day something terrible happens; Oma gets very sick and must go to the hospital. Hyong Bae Oh sees Zoey and gets the chance to tell her what has happened. Will she and her mother be able to help Oma understand that people who are different still be friends?
In this children’s story, a Korean American boy and a Black girl become friends and help the adults in their lives learn an important lesson about overcoming differences.

Kathy Oh

Kathy Oh is a journalist and a Real Estate Entrepreneur who holds a Master of Arts Degree in Communication Management from the Annenberg School of Communications at University of Southern California. She created The Kathy Oh Show; Housing for Veterans to illustrate the effects of housing veterans. She lives with her family, married to Timothy J. DeBaets, Attorney at Law; Entertainment Law, and children, Joseph and Juliette, in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her son, Joseph Bae DeBaets, is a student at Vistamar School in El Segundo, California. He shares his storytelling through his original sketches and illustrations of narratives from his grandfather’s childhood in North Korea.
