INTRODUCTION
This is a love story between a Shanghainese girl known as L and an American guy known as K. L starts a relationship with K and ends up with a mental health problem. But they still stay together after the curve. They both become business owners in the end.
Characters: L, K
In the beginning: L plans to immigrate to the United States. When she arrives, she tries to find different jobs so she can stay in the country. One day, she meets K, and they start to date. But he is not a straightforward person. Basically, he is a nice, hardworking, professional, and generous American guy.
In the middle: L and K come to New York City. L is worried that she may have to leave the United States when her visa expires. K starts to learn about her situation. He gives L a difficult time about going through the immigration process. Finally, K decides to marry L to help her finalize her immigration. Then L gets her US green card.
In the end: When L’s green card is about to expire, L is diagnosed with a mental health problem and has to stay in the hospital for a short time. This causes her to worry about the medical bills, and also if and when she will be able to go back to work again. Finally, she decides to go back China to heal. K still keeps contact with L and is willing to go to China to take care of her.
CHAPTER 1
HOMETOWN
L is from Shanghai, China, a modern developing city. There are many high-rises there. People from different parts of China and from many Western countries live there. Most of the Westerners are from France. Due to Shanghai’s history of concessions, many old buildings in the center of the city were built by the British and the French in the Western style. There are many old Chinese-style residences downtown. They don’t look as nice. The old residential areas are being demolished little by little. The city is still changing. The newly built buildings are very modern. They are designed by Western architecture companies. Many landmarks have also popped up in the past twenty years. Most older Shanghainese grew up in small places without kitchens and bathrooms. Their living conditions were not good. L grew up in that city.
L was born in a prestigious hospital in the downtown area. She spent her childhood in the old residential area in the center of Shanghai. The land was very expensive. It was close to Yu Garden. She had many neighbors. In the morning, she could hear one of her neighbors playing the piano. She used to see the neighbor working on oil paintings at home. When she turned eight, her family immigrated to Sidney, Australia, after her mum was allocated a nice apartment in a decent neighborhood by her company.
