FOREWORD
For most people in the modern world, the Pandemic of 2020 is the worst thing that has ever happened to them. Words like shelter in place, facial mask, social distance, and wash our hands for 20 seconds are commonplace. Businesses, restaurants, bars, movie houses, sporting events are totally, if not partially, changed, and many people think our way of life in modern countries will never return.
COVID-19 is the name of the pandemic that took most people by surprise. History will say that it originated in China and spread from there to the rest of civilized society. The virus is highly contagious, and people were encouraged to maintain a social distance fro other individuals when out in public and to stay indoors when possible. The wearing of facemasks was advised, and many people wore gloves and protective clothing. Medical supplies and first responders were in short supply, and the death rate was high for a sickness of its kind. There was no vaccine to prevent the virus, and no medicines to cure persons, once they were unlucky enough to attract it.
But, we’re getting ahead of the story. What is a pandemic and where did the term come from. To begin, where did the terminology start? An endemic is sickness that belongs to a particular people or country, and an outbreak is a greater-than-anticipated increase in the number of endemic cases. If an outbreak is not controlled, it is called an epidemic. Lastly, a pandemic is an epidemic that spreads over multiple countries or continents and affects a large number of people. The sequence is endemic > outbreak > epidemic > pandemic.
Government leaders are concerned with pandemics from several points of view. The most important point view is clearly how to identify it, cure it, and prevent it. The source is very important, as well as how it affects various groups of people. Eventually, leaders get around to whether it is natural or man-made, and if so, who did it.
This novel attempts to answer some of these questions in a common form of entertainment.

PROLOGUE
A black F-18M fighter jet landed at a secret Air Force base between McLean and Reston, Virginia. The sleek jet was modified to carry a crew of two pilots and two passengers. It was designed for short fast flights of the passengers. The two crew members were experienced fighter pilots and the passengers had no room for luggage, other than a medium-sized briefcase. The jet had no armaments, but included sophisticated surveillance equipment. It was designed and assembled by Boeing in an obscure location in Charleston, South Carolina. The Boeing facility in Charleston was created to assemble the long range version of the popular 787 aircraft. The location was perfect for manufacturing, because of its extensive educational facilities and the excellent labor force in the area. The land area of the plant is extremely large and a small skunk works
to develop the F-18M was barely noticeable. There were numerous chase planes in the area, so another aircraft was not recognizable from the outside. The airplane was designed as an escape vehicle for the President and Vice President, in case of a nuclear incident. The aircraft could fly at Mach 1.5 at 50,000 feet and had the most evasive capability available within the aerospace community. With two wing fuel tanks, the plane could fly an extremely long distance. Its capability is a military secret. The use of the aircraft was controlled and managed by the newly formed United States Space Force.
A lone woman emerged after landing and was ushered into a dark blue medium sized armor plated SUV built at a secret location by Tesla. The SUV was to be escorted by two additional military vehicles, one in the front and one in the rear of the SUV. Both cars operated with the blue flashing lights.
The three vehicles drew up to the side entrance of the White House, and the woman was escorted by the Secret Service to the President’s personal office. The office had only one entrance, guarded by two armed Marines in full dress uniform. There were secret exits from the office, but only the Secret Service knew of their existence. This story describes the events following the above scenario.
