I invented JACK one day through storytelling when my children were very small. Over time, JACK stories evolved and my children got into the act, each imagining their own “monster”. Each of these “monsters” lived with us, and at times, we had some very funny moments! Though I wrote JACK many years ago, it was a lesson in patience to find an illustrator who could capture JACK perfectly! Jennifer Okubo is exactly that illustrator! My own Baca (Grandmother) used to tell me stories about Croatia. Being such an American girl, it intrigued me that my very own grandmother and grandfather (Djedo) came from a faraway land so different from my own. JACK is a true immigration story.
