About this ebook

In her book, How Animal Reiki Found Me and Other Stories, Author Gabriele Annegret shares her journey of awakening through encounters of animals as spirits, message carriers, and healers. Her experiences taught her that magic can only happen outside our comfort zone and opened her up to a world unseen before. Through her eyes, we might relearn to see the world full of wonder, with ties between the natural and spiritual realm. It is her wish that these stories enhance the awareness of her readers and that we all may find better ways to Be while revering all forms of life … especially our animals.

    CHAPTER 1

    An Encounter with the

    Mysterious on the Big Island

The end of March 2015 is approaching, and I’m living in a tent, surrounded by jungle, at the Kalani Oceanside Retreat on the Big Island.

I am loving it. At night I hear the sound of a humpback whale slapping its tail, over and over again. I listen to the coqui frogs, endemic to Puerto Rico and imported like me. They sound like tropical birds and can be heard all night long, sometimes accompanied by the call of a bullfrog.

This late afternoon, I walk to the point and I feel lucky; the swing is unoccupied. I sit down on a slab of worn wood attached by sturdy ropes to a tree branch. It offers an idyllic view of the ocean. Lazily, I indulge in childhood pleasures, my feet gliding over a labyrinth of tree roots. Suddenly I feel a presence behind me. It is so strong that I jump off the swing, and as I turn around, I snap a photo with my phone.

    1%20Angel.jpg

In the light shining through the branches of the trees, I saw an angel … and I felt it on that unforgettable afternoon in Hawaii. A light shiver was running down my body.

I remembered my teacher, Dr. Alberto Villoldo, saying: The visible and invisible worlds are inextricably intertwined ... once you’ve opened your eyes to this, you can dance between them … and change the world with every thought you have and every word you speak.¹

A medical anthropologist and author, Dr. Villoldo has studied the healing practices of the Amazon and Andes shamans for over twenty-five years. He founded the Four Winds Society, an organization dedicated to the bridging of ancient shamanic traditions with modern medicine and psychology. I attended his lectures in Silverlake, Los Angeles, and was so intrigued that soon after, I traveled under his tutelage to Machu Picchu.

I feel very lucky to have been part of this excursion. The altitude of 7,972 feet above sea level took some getting used to as we walked around the amazing Inca Ruins. Turning a corner of this UNESCO world heritage site, one of the Q’ero shamans who accompanied us played his flute, looking over the Urubamba River valley. Listening to him, I felt his reverence.

While hiking a leg of the Inca Trail, we were able to take in the beauty of this heart-opening place. And we attended a beautiful sacred ritual performed by the shamans. We spent the night in Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire, located even higher at 11,152 feet above sea level.

For an overnight excursion, we traveled on bus further up into the mountains. Tents and our luggage had been set up for us, and we hiked for several hours to reach the camp. The altitude was truly high, and the air thin, and we walked very slowly. A few horses and oxygen tanks accompanied us. The vistas were absolutely breathtaking. I felt like I was on top of the world.

The second half of the trip was spent at the Amazon. One late afternoon, a knowledgeable guide led us into the jungle and showed us how medicine could be retrieved by cutting off leaves and roots of the abundant plants that grew there.

A beautiful iridescent blue butterfly crossed my path and took my breath away. The most common meaning for butterflies is as symbols for life, love, change or rebirth. Butterflies are also popularly thought to symbolize a person’s essence, or soul, either past, present or future."² An all-night plant medicine ceremony guided by a shaman, who sang beautiful Icaros, brought me in touch with all of the above.

When I returned, I studied the four directions of the Medicine Wheel, the ancient map for healing, over a period of two years. My window of perception had been slightly cracked open.

    Angels

Have you, dear reader, ever wondered if angels exist? Perhaps you’ve had an experience when you felt that a guardian angel protected you from harm.

About half a year after the angel appeared, Humanity’s Team Daily Inspiration landed in my email box, and I wholeheartedly agree with its notion: Life is so much more fun and rewarding when you connect with the other planes and dimensions of existence, especially with such loving beings as angels.³

A dear friend of mine put it this way: You have a rich inner life. Having had this wonderful apparition made me reflect on how I receive information.

    Numbers

When I see a number like 11:11 or 3:33, I feel connected and watched over by angels. I look up the meaning, and it gives me reassurance that I’m on the right path. I get insight, and sometimes clarity, or it might even challenge my status quo.

I love this quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer, which he adopted from A Course in Miracles: If you knew who walked beside you at all times, on the path that you have chosen, you could never experience fear or doubt again.

Delving into numerology, I understand that numbers have more meaning than just being digits. They also hold unique vibrational patterns. We all have heard the expression ‘third time’s a charm.’ The number 3 is all about the idea of creation, manifestation, and growth.

Lately, I have been seeing 4:44 a lot, and it makes sense to me in this current phase: By meditating and focusing on the number 4, you can serve as the mediator between the heavens and the earth. Part of receiving divine guidance is simply noticing it when it shows up!

My Life Path Number is a 3. The month, day and year of my birthdate are each added up, reduced to a single digit and then added together. Through the site Numerologist, I learned that I have an inspiring voice and that my destiny is to be a creator, collaborator and communicator. I sure hope I do just that.

    Bird Feathers

While writing these pages, I heard the call of a bird flying over me. Later I found a feather in a flower bed. I determined it to be from a barn owl. I knew that owl feathers symbolize magic and intuition. I kept reading on, and it turned out to be a lovely confirmation for the thoughts I had just put down on paper.

When Owl wings its way into your life, you have the opportunity to become far more observant. Settle down on that tree limb and watch. You’ll be amazed at how much life goes by when you’re not running around so much. In fact, you’ll notice a lot of important details that previously eluded you.

    I aspire to slowing down!

    Sixth Sense: Extrasensory Perception

I want to sense more and more beyond the limitation of mind and body and my five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. I want to open my eyes wider, expand my vision and sharpen my intuition and go beyond the mind. I would like to develop a deep sense of life beyond the five senses and connect to the great mystery. I’m learning again and again that every interaction offers an opportunity to grow. Most of us are living just a fraction of what we are capable of.

I might plan to go grocery shopping, and all of a sudden, I hear a little whisper and feel compelled to drive to the department store, finding myself amongst pots and pans. I am pleasantly surprised that the Dutch oven is on special and costs a fraction of the original price. It is just what I need as I start to bake my own bread again. I feel guided.

I have been shedding one veil after the other, getting rid of misconceptions and projections, and I can see more clearly. It seems to be an ongoing, intense uncovering. To sustain awake-fullness for a longer time, it has to be a dedicated practice. Growing and expanding has become a daily ritual.

I have always been rather sensitive, and more often than not, I had experienced that I can feel the energy and emotions of others. Being an empath and clairsentient (the ability to clearly sense, perceive or feel things, especially the ones that are hidden from plain sight), I had to learn to differentiate between my own feelings and the feelings of others.

Have you ever entered a room and felt that you could cut the air, even though nobody spoke a word? Maybe an argument had been going on between two or more people. Most likely, people were upset or even angry. In the past, I sometimes felt an inexplicable sadness coming over me, like a dark cloud, and I was wondering why. What was it? I had been fine before!

I eventually figured out that I had absorbed the emotions of other people around me. We are all connected. My energetic body is constantly exchanging information with my surroundings. I had to learn to be mindful of the
