About this ebook

While doing his daily meditations, the Holy Spirit gave the author the title of his book.

Let Him That Sleepeth Arise is a phrase that the Apostle Paul employed when writing to the churches in Ephesus. When the author was given the title, he had no idea he’d turn it into a book.

The book encourages those of faith to continue walking with the Lord and urges unbelievers to move toward the light. It seeks to answer questions such as:

• What does it mean to be spiritually asleep?

• How can we boost our awareness of what is truly important?

• What can we do to avoid the seducing power of Satan?

• How can we gain more access to the power of God?

When you are spiritually awake, it means that your spiritual self has been revived to life through the power and word of life, Jesus Christ. Spiritual sleep makes you care less for the things of God, and it diminishes your faith in Jesus Christ – if you ever had faith.

Whether you are seeking to boost your faith or find it for the first time, you will discover the power of the Holy Spirit in this book.

    Introduction

Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. (1 Peter 1:12–15)

The word of God tells us to be sober and alert; this admonishing is to engender us who walk this earth to have a mind-set that we are sojourners upon it. We as believers in Christ Jesus are to be mindful of our daily doings and goings in these last days. Our adversary- Satan and the powers of darkness- are out to cause many to fall out of the way of faith. The only way that this can take place is when we yield ourselves to their enticements and seduction, which are clearly lies. Yielding leads to spiritual sleep and slumbering.

Spiritual sleep or slumber is a state of mind wherein the consciousness is suppressed into doing that which is against God’s word. Remember that anything that goes contrary to the will of God is in enmity with Him. The intention of God is to awaken believers from that state of mind imposed on their senses by sin and disobedience to the light of truth and love.

First John 4:7–8 clearly states that God is love and that those who love belong to God and know their creator. Knowing the creator and embracing his light create in you the power of spiritual alertness and strength to overcome the trials and temptations of this world. Trials and temptations are things that we all must pass through. Just like in a car factory, before each vehicle is released for sales, it must first be tested and tried. Each car that meets all the criteria is sent forward into the market. So also, our testing is necessary to bring out that quality and to make us perfect; just as our Father in heaven is perfect. Our God is a holy God and demands that those who pass through this earth, focusing on Jesus Christ, should by the power of the Holy Spirit come out holy just like him.

Spiritual sleep or slumber is a serious issue as it has plagued our communities, homes, churches, schools, and indeed our world. Spiritual sleep is a scary and tragic situation. You as a believer working in the light of truth need not be afraid, as you can remember what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ spoke of regarding these days. To give us a clear understanding of the spiritual state of mind of many people, the Lord stated that his return shall be like a thief in the night. This word allows us to grasp how ready the world will be upon his return. With respect to their spiritual state of mind, many people shall be asleep.

When people are naturally asleep, their consciousness is suspended from surrounding activities. This is the reason why some people get their faces painted while they have snoozed-off in the classroom or at office. Not that this is a good thing to do; however, it demonstrates how sleeping suspends the mind from the natural senses. In the spiritual perspective of sleep, the eyes are open and not closed; but the spiritual senses are disconnected. This is the reason each and every believer must strive to be spiritually awake and alert. Spiritual awakening is the intention of God for the last days; therefore, I encourage you to be sober and be vigilant (alert).

    What Is the Meaning

    of Sleep?

    Therefore He says:

    "Awake, you who sleep,

    Arise from the dead

And Christ will give you light."

    (Ephesians 5:14 NKJV)

What is the meaning of sleep? Sleep, slept, and sleeping are forms of a verb (used without object). To sleep means to take a certain kind of rest that results in the suspension of voluntary bodily functions and the natural suspension, complete or partial, of consciousness; ceasing from being awake (Webster Dictionary).

Sleep is a verb, and a verb is an action word. Sleeping can be voluntary, and it is a natural action that, when undertaken, causes people to suspend their consciousness. Consciousness refers to awareness or a sensory response to a matter, so that it can be acknowledged to exist. Acknowledgment depends on attention, and attention and focus are the play of the mind. For you to truly apprehend and appreciate whatever is being presented before you, you must be in a conscious state.

Wakefulness also does not necessarily mean we are paying attention. Our attention or focus still needs to be directed toward the object presented, so that it can be recorded into our consciousness. Once we are conscious of it, we are now able to analyze and appreciate what is before us.

In the matter of attention and focus, we are all guilty of paying attention to some certain thing around us, while we neglect other matters, even though they are right in front of us. This is the power of the brain and senses. The brain can sometimes eliminate things that it senses to be unimportant; while it helps us focus on those that are important. Have you driven down a road leading to your house so many times that you never took note of a certain thing—not until you were looking for something around that place? As your attention was drawn to that location and the suppression of brain cues was eliminated, you were suddenly able to see a store, a poster, a statue, or something you never acknowledged to exist. This is the power that the brain has on our perception by means of directing our attention to sense and interpret the things around us.

When sleep is the state during which attention and consciousness are analyzed, a sleeping person may have a degree of consciousness but will never be able to demonstrate attention. Attention requires wakefulness; and without attention there is no consciousness. In the Christian faith, if you are a follower of Jesus Christ and are spiritually asleep, this means that you not paying attention and have lost consciousness.

Your focus and attention as a believing Christian must be on Jesus Christ; however, when the spiritual mind has been corrupted, then the power for attention is lost. Spiritual sleep is the opposite of spiritual wakefulness. When you are spiritually awake, it means that your spiritual self has been revived to life through the power and word of life, Jesus Christ. Spiritual sleep makes you care less for the things of God, and it diminishes your faith in Jesus Christ, if you ever had faith. Spiritual sleep makes you more yielded and comfortable with sin, disobedience, and anything that is totally against God and his word.

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. (Ephesians 5:14)

Ephesians 5:14 exhorts anyone who is caught up in spiritual sleep (ungodliness, disobedience, or transgression) to awaken from that slumber (suspension of consciousness) and become conscious (submit to the authority, will, and power of God). Jesus Christ said to his disciples, as he is speaking to everybody; If any want to be with me, they need to deny themselves, pick up the cross, and follow me (Matthew 16:24, paraphrased). When you choose not to sin, you are choosing to remain awake; in the contrary state, you yield to the seductions of Satan.

Just as Adam and Eve were tempted in the Garden of Eden, so also was Jesus Christ tempted; however, he chose not to yield to the seducing power of Satan. Jesus Christ was born and raised just as we all are, but he chose to follow after God in his heart and denied himself the pleasures, lust, and things that the world uses to lure people away from the faith. His actions earned him the power for spiritual wakefulness and consciousness; and he received from God power and authority.

For you to experience wakefulness, you must follow in the footsteps of holiness, righteousness, and truth, denying yourself just as Jesus Christ did. The outcome of self-denial is spiritual awakening and experiencing the light of the power of God. According to Ephesians 5:14, Christ will give you light.

Jesus Christ is the light of God. He is a light to the world so that all who walk in darkness should find their way to true love and be saved from the destruction and wrath of God to come upon this world—that is, everybody who has not followed the truth. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and a gift of salvation to all people. As the last and final hope and gift for salvation, God’s intention
