There’s a hint of frustration in her father’s voice as he glances at his watch for the third time.
Scout. Scout, come here boy.
A roly-poly black lab comes bounding to Father’s side. 80lbs of dog leans heavily into his knee. Atta a boy. Good dog, Scout.
Father looks down lovingly at the family’s loyal companion. Go. Fetch. Fetch Skye.
He says while pushing the kitchen door open. Scout dashes out the door. Closing it gently he looks at this wife. Have you seen Skye this morning?
Mother is in the process of making sandwiches, without looking up, shakes her head no.
In front of her, on the kitchen counter, is a row of three insulated lunch pouches. Cutting the first complete sandwich in quarters, she places it inside a plastic self-folding pocket. Grabbing a mini box of raisins, along with the sandwich, she places them in a pink lunch bag. Silently she proceeds to make the second sandwich which she’ll put, along with an apple, into a red lunch bag.
Father, muttering to himself, looks around wondering what to do next. So, you haven’t seen her eh…she’s probably chasing the elusive butterfly amongst your crazy cosmos garden.
He chuckles.
Mother looks over to him with a quizzical glance.
Ah-ha! He’s got her attention he thinks proudly. Mischievously, he smiles. I must say honey bee, your cosmos garden is an exceptional symphony of vibrant colors this Spring.
Grinning warmly, she lifts her head up fully. Thank you dear.
Then immediately refocuses back to completing the final tuna sandwich. In the fridge she picks the ripest purple plum and places them both inside the turquoise lunch bag.
There’s a loud sharp bark at the kitchen door. Father jumps. Holy Toledo.
He exclaims. A very excited Scout stands, waiting at the door, panting and wagging his tail rapidly. Taking the last step onto the deck is an equally excited young girl with very flushed rosy cheeks and a grin stretching from ear to ear. She stops a moment to imitate her dog’s panting, which increases her giggling, which gives her the hiccups! Father opens the door for them.
Wasting no time Scout scurries to his water bowl and laps up the water furiously. It’s flying everywhere! Father gets Skye a glass of water and places it on the kitchen table. Turning around quickly he gathers her in his arms lifting her up high in the hopes of scaring her hiccups away! She’s squirming and squealing with delight as he plants butterfly kisses on her cheeks, forehead, and the tip of her nose. She hugs his neck tightly as her hiccups persist. Placing her feet firmly back on the floor, he reaches for the glass of water to give to her. I love you, kiddo.
She gulps down the water promptly. Then, BAM! She slams the glass onto the table. Aaaaah,
Skye says smacking her lips dramatically. The hiccups have disappeared.
Father slouches down, lightly turning his daughter around so she is looking directly at him. Skye, listen to me. We’ll be leaving soon. Please go wash your hands thoroughly. Get your special flower sweater that is lying on your bed.
She’s off as if the wind is carrying her.
MiMaw will be here soon.
He hollers as an afterthought. Within minutes their front door bell rings. Skye leaps down the last two steps. Her sweater is holding on by a thread. Watching nearby Father holds his breath.
MeeeeMawww.
Skye opens the door and flings herself into her grandma’s body. MiMaw just manages to let go of her traveling case to be able to clutch Skye closely to her. Crouching down she’s eye-to-eye with her cherished granddaughter. Are you all ready for your magical adventure?
Skye’s curly topped head bobs up and down. You know I will take great care of Scout don’t you.
Again, she nods her head several times while taking hold of her gran’s left hand. Standing up, MiMaw grabs her case with her right hand. Glancing back to her son with an enormous smile on her face, off the two go to MiMaw’s assigned bedroom. Skye is chattering away. MiMaw is laughing. Scout is following closely, doing his best to squeeze in between the two of them.
Within a half hour there’s a prominent double beep of a car’s horn outside. Father pulls back the curtain and sees a shiny black limousine in their driveway. The limo is here. Time to go. Come on Skye do not dawdle.
Scout is the first to appear, then comes MiMaw holding Skye’s hand tightly.
Do we have everyone and everything?
Mother asks while glancing around the room.
There’s lots of good-bye hugs and kisses. MiMaw holds the door open with one hand, while securing Scout’s collar with the other. Quickly the family and their luggage are safe inside the limo and with a soft toot they drive away.
Wiping a tear rolling down her cheek MiMaw cuddles Scout. You’ll miss them I know, but you have me. Let’s go for a walk. You can show me your favorite places. Well, not all of them.
She chuckles stroking his silky black coat.
Scout recognizes the word walk
and that is all he needs to know. He’s dancing around in circles smiling up at MiMaw. I wonder where your leash is.
Leash.
That’s another word Scout knows, so off he goes toward his food storage bin. Not dinner Scout.
MiMaw stops, as she sees his leash hanging nearby. Oh, my dear, what a clever boy you are. Let’s grab a treat for you before we set off!
Treat.
Scout sits. MiMaw is laughing hysterically. OK, two of them. At this rate we will never leave the house.
She wipes her tears of joy and attaches the leash to his collar. Out the door they go on their own magical adventure.
Within a few days Skye will be 5 years old. The family are on their way to the Island of Bermuda. They will celebrate her birthday with her great-grandparents who have lived there for 52 years. Skye’s dad and his grandfather were born in Bermuda. Her dad’s great-grandfather was also born in Bermuda many, many, many, years ago.
The family arrive at Logan’s International Airport in record time. The limo pulls up curb side to allow everyone easy access to the terminal. Their check-in and customs procedures go surprisingly smooth. Angels must be with us.
Father winks to Skye. She scrunches her eyes, then blinks them while turning up the left corner of her mouth in an attempt to wink back. He cannot resist bending down to give a fatherly I-love-you-hug. Straightening back up he says, OK, we are all set. Let’s find our gate and wait for our flight’s boarding call.
He picks Skye up so they can move faster, and negotiate easily, around the crowd of people moving in every direction around them. It is a very busy airport. Do you see the letters D-E-L-T-A Skye?
Yes.
She points with her index finger to a sign on their left. D-E-L-T-A
repeating the letters.
That spells Delta. Delta is the airplane that will take us to Bermuda. Here dear, this is where we go.
He says turning sideways to his wife. Now Skye can you find the number 5?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, …7, 8, 9, 10, e’leb’bin.
She proudly shows that she can count.
Excellent. Tell me when you see the number 5. OK.
OK!
She shouts at the top of her lungs.
Once settled at the gate Mother takes Skye to the restroom. Father stays behind to watch their carry-on bags. The time passes swiftly for them. Soon the announcement is made, that boarding for Delta flight 1156 non-stop to Bermuda, is about to begin. The Delta gate agent waves Skye’s family forward to preboard the plane.
