    CHAPTER 1

    AT CHUCKY CHEEESE:

March 29, 1997 I was at the Chucky Cheese Restaurant with my friends. Tino and Roy. We had stopped for pizza. Afterwards, we left as we were leaving in my neon. On the other side of the road, as we were leaving the lot, we saw Amos Arch and Drey. After seeing them I woke up on a stretcher. Just relax said the ambulance guy. I remember a tear coming out of my eye, while lying there. I don’t remember what happened in the car. We had been struck from behind. Roy was in the back seat and he said his back was hurting. I’m dazed, said Tino. But when he looked over at me I was knocked out cold. He said he shook me. But got no response. So he checked to see if my heart was beating. Yes, he’s still alive, said my friend Tino. I tried to get out of the car, said Tino. The doors seemed to be jammed. Then he said that was when the ambulance arrived. When I was in the hospital, relatives said I kept waking up and going back to sleep. I was in the intensive care unit, in critical condition. I was not suppose to make it. There are reasons for everything, I guess. The car was destroyed that night. When I awoke I saw friends and family. I remember seeing Sissy. And out of the blue came Ron Phil Coatsy Carper (a friend of mine that I grew up with). Then one after another from Phil Coats Foltz, Shaw Phillus (my brother), Eleanor and Jack Phillus (my parents), Kel Phillus (my sister), Lenarad Till ( my cousin), Ike Manson (my friend), and his crew, Rasheen Exel and Myron Mayberry, and people from church that I knew. Last came the reverend. He smiled like he had sloppy Joe in his mouth. Out of the blue came the landlord. When statements were made about my recovery Don Williamson said we’re looking for a speeding recovery. I said to myself now why would he say that. Probably because he just wanted his rent money. He wasn’t worried about me for real. I remember when everyone left it was time to eat. The things on my plate I didn’t like. One item was Jell-O. I hated Jell-O. I told the nurse I don’t like Jell-O. She said why didn’t you tell me. Before she could finish I threw up all the food. I could taste the pizza in my mouth the night before. While laying there I experienced a large amount of pain in my head. That’s when the doctor came in with some of his staff and picked me up and put a neckbrace on my neck. I had a concussion. And my neck was fractured (C-5 vertebrae). My head was swollen. I had blood in my head. The doctor checked to see if I needed surgery. Because if I did they would have cracked my head open. But luckily my damage wasn’t that severe. Your lucky. You could have been paralyzed. Your blessed, said my doctor. They kept taking x-rays, every so often, checking to see if I needed surgery or had brain damage. The x-rays came back negative. No surgery on my behalf had to be performed. I said to myself this is terrible to be laying here on Easter. I had no choice but to remain calm.

    CHAPTER 2

    FREE TO GO HOME:

As time went on I was free to leave the hospital until further notice. I had to return in a week or two for more x-rays. I was too weak to return to work or to even go back to my apartment. So I stayed with my parents for awhile. they waited on me hand and foot until I got on their nerves. But you know how that is. Some of you know what I’m talking about.

My mom and sister took me to check on my apartment. When we arrived I noticed that the door was broken in by the lock area, several pieces of wood chips were broken up on the floor by the door. Going into my apartment I noticed certain items missing. First off my GI-JOES with Kung-Fu grip and other GI-JOES were gone. I then ran to the other room and noticed that all of my CDS were gone. Turning around I looked on the floor. My CD Player was gone, too. Immediately, I ran back out into the living room. Not noticing before when I came in my apartment but my TV and VCR was gone, also. All my little nick nacks, my watches, gold, bracelets and my barber clippers were gone. Then I ran to the closet. None of my clothes were missing. But I did notice that my camouflage jacket was gone. I ran to the window and looked out. The only person who I thought could have been responsible for all of this was the guy on the second floor. Whom I had helped before my accident find his daughter who also lived on the second floor. People would come by looking for her and they would ring the third floor bell. I would come down and tell them I don’t know her. But because this man came to me and said he was her father, I felt bad because it seemed like it was a matter of life and death. So I told him where she lived. He also had a green car with Wisconsin’s License Plate. I remember him trying to sell the car. I thought because of this he could have been the only one responsible for breaking into my apartment. So with no hesitation I opened the door and ran down the stairs. My sister and mother followed me down. As I looked at him in his car while it was parked, He looked at me. He always wore dark shades. While standing in the door , I said, I know he had something to do with this, thinking that he would hear me. He did. The man got out of his car and said what are you blaming me. I tried to get to the man, so I could jump on him. But my sister held me back and said to me the doctor said your not suppose to get worked up. After saying that to me my legs got weak from getting angry. I had to sit down on the banister outside. The man then approached me and said the landlord had informed us that the guy on the third floors apartment had been broken into. I thought now why would the landlord inform him because he didn’t live there. He was just staying with his daughter on the second floor. Then he said the landlord informed them to keep all the doors locked. Now I thought whoever did this to me knew that I was in the hospital. Everytime this man would talk to me he wore shades on his eyes. Maybe that was to hide something. Maybe even a pack of lies. Afterwards, my parents told me that they knew that my apartment had been broken into. But they didn’t want to tell me because they thought I would snap out, in the hospital. I thought to myself, my own parents, my own flesh and blood, couldn’t even tell me when they had known for quite sometime. But acted like they didn’t know. I went to the landlord and told him I was going to break the lease. He said that that was ok. But he’ll have to put up a rent sign. It still bothered me about me about my belongings, especially my antique GI-JOES, from the 60’s and 70’s, that were worth money. To me everyone was a suspect. From my parents to my cousin Bernard to Ike Manson to the landlord. I needed answers because I was empty. I thought who could have done such a thing.

    CHAPTER 3

    CHECKING THE APARTMENT:

A couple days later, it was on a Sunday, my parents took me by to check my apartment for mail. That man on the second floor was outside. His radio was out on the porch. He was dressed in his church attire. When we passed him he was clapping his hands, saying Yes, the Lord is real, the Lord is real. I said to him well whoever did it will pay on judgment day. Then he said Yes, they will pay, they will pay. Well several weeks passed. I kept coming to check my mail. Finally, my phone bill arrived. My phone bill was sky high. Someone had ran my phone bill up. My phone bill had been run up to three hundred dollars. I thought who could have done this?, Who is responsible for this? Who is responsible for such ignorance. The Sprint phone bill had a lot of different cities on it. I noticed calls that had been made that I knew nothing about. The calls were made to Ocean City Maryland, Oklahoma, Atlanta, Kentucky, Milwaukee Wisconsin’s, and several more. Now I remember that before my accident this guy staying on the second floor owned a green car with a Wisconsin’s license plate. Now I had a friend thats like family who looked over the phone bill. He told me to look for something that you may recognize. Because the phone bills had numbers to go with the destinations. It helped me a little bit because Phil Coats worked for law enforcement. After looking over the phone bills I called the police. They assigned an officer to the case. The officers name that was assigned was officer Willard Boyz. When I met with Officer Boyz he wanted copies of the phone bills. I gave him copies of the phone bills. He was investigating, but to me not fast enough. So I did investigations on my own. Thanks to Phil Coats for his telling me how to go about it. There was also a number on the phone bills of the women on the second floor. The police confirmed that, when I was talking to him on the phone. He had traced it to a cherry Johnston, who occupied the second floor apartment. So he went over to the apartment. Miss Johnston was not home. So he left a card. Now I thought that that was kind of dumb. Because if she had anything to do with this it gave her time to get rid of the evidence. In my words I say Dumb boyz dumb. Referring to the officer who was assigned to the case. Finally, Officer Boyz, met with Miss Johnston. He said that she expressed how she had nothing to do with my apartment being broken into. And said I am trying to finish school and I don’t want any trouble. Miss Johnston started to cry. Officer Boyz searched the apartment but found nothing. Now in my opinion, not that anyone cares, but you mean to tell me that if calls were made from her house that she didn’t know about them. I find that hard to believe. Well, anyway, she came to me and admitted that her father, who was staying with her, was on drugs. And might have broken into my place. But she just didn’t want to say anything. I thought such a judas, how could this man, whom I helped find his daughter betray me by robbing me?

One day I came home and the green car parked outside the house, I took down the license plate and the cops ran it. I found out that the man driving the car was wanted for armed robbery and burglary in Wisconsin’s, where I guess he was from. Knowing this that made sense. Because now I had a better understanding of what to conclude. I figured when I was in the hospital, my parents would check up on my place. I always wondered why no one saw anything. Because it was an inside job. Ok. Now when my parents would check up on the place. Mr. Jackson knew what times they would come and leave. Which gave him time to plan out what he was going to do. Then Officer Boyz called me at work and said we know who broke into your apartment. His name is Jack Jackson. Now I said to myself no s-h-I-t! Officer Boyz. After all of this my things were not retrieved. I thought what a loss. Because Officer Boyz said at least you know who robbed you. A lot of help he was. Just like when he said "my goodness we do have something here while looking at the phone bills. The only thing that I wonder about is where did he take my GI-JOES?

Now the woman on the first and second floor were good friends. So I figure if they had something to do with it. They were in it together. They both said how sorry they were about my apartment being robbed. Well, a couple months went by. I noticed coming home on my lunch break. The woman on the first floor had a designer shirt on. It looked like one of mine. Something said to me say something. Something said don’t say anything. So I replied with you know I use to have a shirt like that. She replied with Oh yeah, I got this as a gift from my cousin and looked away. I think she was lying. Soon afterwards the woman on the first and second floor moved out. You know it could have been guilt. I said to myself that if I ever see that man again I would do something to him. I figure his daughter told him that the police were looking for him. So he got out of dodge. I had people calling the numbers on the Sprint phone bills. To see if they could find Mr. Johnson. We found the black son of a B in a church that houses people. Officer Boyz said that if I ever see him to report it. I said if I see him I’m going to do a job on him. Officer Boyz said to no extent are you to take the law into your own hands.

    CHAPTER 4

    ABLE TO WORK AGAIN:

Time passed and I was able to return to work. I got a lot of what happened to your neck?, are you alright?, even from people who saw me Monday but waited until Friday to say something. I thought how fake. Or they probably just didn’t know what to say. I always thought that if you really don’t know what to say, don’t say anything at all. As the day progressed it was lunch time. I was standing outside waiting for my parents. They were suppose to pick me up for lunch. There standing beside me was a thin but beautiful girl. I really didn’t know what to say. So I said are you new here. She replied with yes. I just started today. I said to her who are you waiting for your boyfriend? She said no." The guy pulled up in a car.
