    Getting Ready for Camp

It was summer vacation. Ten-year-old Amelia Jae—called AJ by everyone except her mom—skipped around her room and hummed to herself while she picked out her clothes for camp. This would be her first time at camp and her first overnight trip without her parents. She folded her clothes carefully, just like she had seen her mother do many times. Each time she placed an item in the suitcase her grandmother had given her, she checked it off her list of things to bring.

Okay, Pepper. Looks like I’m almost done. I’ve got two pairs of shoes, five pairs of shorts, five T-shirts, a swimsuit, flip-flops, pj’s, and slippers, said AJ to her black cat, who was sitting on the floor.

While she looked down the list to see what else she needed, she watched Pepper out of the corner of her eye.

Meow, said Pepper, who jumped on the bed and walked over to the suitcase. She sniffed it, meowed again, stepped in, and curled up on the clothes.

AJ laughed at the sight of Pepper in her suitcase. She lifted her out and set her on the floor. Now just look at your long black fur on my clothes. What am I going to do with you? You’re always getting into things. If you’re not jumping in my suitcase, you’re crawling into grocery bags or getting yourself stuck in the pantry. I bet your snooping is how you got the little scar on your nose before we adopted you. You’re such a silly kitty. You need to stay out of my suitcase. I’m going to camp, and you can’t come. Camp’s not for kitties. I’ll tell you all about it when I get home.

Pepper tilted her head to the side and looked at AJ with her gold eyes. Then she jumped back on the foot of AJ’s bed and watched.
