    The Awakening - P. S. Marrow

    Chapter 1

Winter gave way to spring in Juneau, Alaska, and the days were growing gloriously longer. Annie had experienced her first long, dark Alaskan winter.

She hopped out of bed and whipped her bedroom curtains open, delightfully surprised to come face-to-face with the first docked cruise ship of the year across the street from her building. The docks were so close that it almost seemed as if she could reach out and touch the ship.

She smiled, remembering the first time she had seen a big ship out that window. It happened almost one year earlier when Annie was a new enrollee in the federal witness protection program. Deputy U.S. Marshal Shawn Adams, assigned to her case, was asleep out on her couch.

Annie was getting close to completing her one-year requirement of living in the government apartment. She dreamed of finally renting a small house in town that didn’t have an official government office attached to it. Not that she minded the proximity of the Marshals when they were in town, which made her feel safe, but she was ready to be out on her own.

Frankie? she called into the apartment.

    Out here!

Annie followed his voice out to the Marshal’s office door in the stairwell.

How would you like to walk over to the courthouse with me Annie? I just have to drop this report off and we can do breakfast, Frankie asked her.

I’ll be ready in 20 minutes!

Frankie set the security alarm and Annie felt a wave of mixed emotions as she descended the stairs behind him. She remembered how vulnerable she was the evening she arrived at the apartment over Edward and Katie’s jewelry store. She already had so many incredible memories of her first year in Juneau. Her mood quickly brightened at the prospect of looking for a little house to rent.

Hold on. I have to drop something off here for these folks. It will only take a minute, Frankie said.

The two of them climbed up a dozen cement stairs to the front porch of a three-story house built into the mountain. Frankie knocked on the front door while Annie admired the view.

This won’t take long, he said.

They waited, and no one answered.

No one seems to be home, Annie said.

Oh, that might be because no one lives here! Frankie told her and reached into his pocket. Maybe we should go look around and see if we like it, he said with a big smile.

What? A rental? You are kidding me! You are always full of surprises!

Frankie unlocked the door and they entered the house. Annie immediately felt the good and positive energy inside. She spent 10 minutes walking around looking in every room, every closet and out every window.

The privacy is amazing. I love the big wooden staircase facing the front door and the open floor plan around it. Look at all these tall windows! The view! The kitchen! It’s so beautiful. I’ll be visiting you all the time, she laughed.

The house was situated on the edge of town just blocks from the apartment. The garage was built on the lowest level, elevating the upper two levels for viewing over the city and the channel.

I want you to live here with me, Annie. In this house, or another house if you don’t like this one.

Frankie! Are you kidding me? Annie looked flabbergasted. Frankie chuckled. He could tell he caught her off guard, again.

Do you like this house, Annie?

I do! It’s amazing. Absolutely and without reservation, Frankie. I love it. This is too much. Can we afford this?

You save your money. I can afford it.

How much is it renting for? I can help.

I have no idea. I know what the price tag is though, and I have an agent holding it for us if you like it. Frankie watched Annie look out the front windows over the city.

I can’t imagine living anywhere else, she said and spun around to see Frankie on one knee holding open a small velvet box. Frankie!

Annie walked up to him and looked down at a beautiful diamond engagement ring.

Will you marry me, Francie? he said, breaking the rules by using her real name.

Joy burst into Annie’s eyes as she looked from the sparkling diamond ring to Frankie’s handsome face.

Yes! she said with absolute enamored devotion.

Frankie stood and placed the ring on her finger and then held her. The two of them stood silently, rocking gently in each other’s arms in the empty house.

I still love when you call me Francie, she cooed.

    I do too.

When I saw that reptilian attached to you in Sitka Frankie, I feared I had lost you forever. It was my worst nightmare.

I’m not going anywhere, Annie. The silver lining in that event was you could immediately see it on me and you helped me. I don’t know how many other people in the world are fortunate enough to have an Annie to rescue them from those things. The reptilians are everywhere. But we’ll talk about that another time.

I’m sorry. I’m just blown away by your amazing proposal and I’m glad that I didn’t lose you to one of those things.

Frankie pulled back and the two of them looked at the ring on Annie’s finger. It was a magical moment of love, deeper bonding, and absolute commitment.

So, I’ll call my agent and have him start the paperwork if you’re sure you like this house.

I love this house. I never thought of buying a house. I was just going to rent a little house and wasn’t sure if you would get your own place or what. I can already tell you I couldn’t top this. Look at it! she said and walked in a large circle looking out the windows again with a beaming smile. I will make you very happy here, Frankie. I love how it sits up higher than the street. We’re on the edge of the wilderness, aren’t we?

    We are.

Look! There’s the apartment building in front of the cruise ships down there. That’s so cool. We had a lot of good times there.

Yes, we did. Frankie smiled at his bride-to-be.

I’m engaged! Annie blurted out and looked at her ring, smiling.

    You are.

I am overwhelmed with excitement. In 32 more days, I will finally be allowed to move out of that apartment, she said. Meanwhile, I can come over here and work on getting everything ready to move in. Look! It has a security system too.

It will be exciting for you, Annie. You’ve adjusted well here in Juneau. Look at this, Frankie said and pulled an envelope from his jacket.

Annie took the envelope and opened it excitedly. No way! Really?

Lexi just authorized it. The one-year commitment to protective housing is only a projected time period. A team evaluates each witness to determine how well he or she is adjusting to their new life. That one-year mark is fluid. Lexi, Shawn, myself and others think you’re ready to get out and start your life.

Really? she asked looking up to Frankie and back down at the form.

Yes, really. If I wasn’t positive that you were ready, I would not have agreed. Do you feel ready?

Absolutely! I’m ready, Frankie. I’m ready to have a home.

Home. I love how that sounds. I still can’t believe I got the Juneau Judicial Security position. I’m still pinching myself.

I am too. It will be so amazing, Frankie. Shawn didn’t say a thing to me about this last week when he stopped by for his monthly visit.

I told him not to say anything. I wanted to surprise you.

Well, you did! When can we move?

    We can start today.

For the next month, Annie worked feverishly at setting up their new home. Frankie helped evenings and weekends. It was a time of closure and the completion of healing for Annie. She cleansed the home with sage and sprinkled salt around its property line. The amount of positive energy on the lot was nearly intoxicating to her.

Well, this is it. Wait! she said to Frankie as she set her camera bag on the breakfast bar in the old apartment. She took a series of photos around the old apartment for memory’s sake. Okay, I’m ready. She set the alarm for the last time.

Frankie pushed the exit door open into the sunlight and the two joined hands and walked, without words, to their new home. The warm spring air intensified their experience as they shared another of life’s milestones together.

    Chapter 2

Annie hung the last of 12 tall sheers in the dining and kitchen areas and stood back to admire her work when her phone rang.

    Hello, Father Zak.

Hello, Annie. I wondered if I could speak with you and Frankie at my office soon.

    Sure, Father. What’s this about?

I’d rather speak to you in person.

I’ll see if Frankie is available after work. I don’t think he has court today so he may get off early. Would around 4:00 be okay?

    That would be fine.

I’ll call if we can’t make it; otherwise we’ll see you then.

Annie and Frankie walked into the parish offices at 4:00 sharp. Annie tapped her fingers on Kathleen’s desk and whistled into the air with a sheepish grin.

Oh my! Is that an engagement ring, Annie?

    It is.

Kathleen got up, walked around her desk and hugged Annie. Congratulations to the both of you, she said with great admiration.

Thank you, they said at the same time.

What’s all the excitement? Father Zak asked as he entered the front office.

Annie held her ring out for Father Zak to see while she smiled brightly. Frankie and I are engaged!

Congratulations! Both of you. That’s wonderful news, Father Zak said. Come on in.

Annie and Frankie both noticed that Father Zak was not his usual self. He looked tired and gaunt. They followed him to his office, and each had a seat in the chairs in front of his desk.

So, what did you want to see us about? Annie asked the priest.

Annie, this has to do with the reptilians and what you described as their attachments to humans. Since the attachments to Father Troy, Frankie and the others who you told me about, I have spent much time in prayer over this matter. I now believe that we were dealing with reptilians as opposed to demonic attachments in those incidents. Annie, I need to be ready to help with future occurances should they arise. I will also have to tell Father Troy. I have so many unanswered questions and I know you do, too. I need to know how to handle these… beings if it happens to others in our care here at St. Mary’s or the surrounding communities or beyond. Or, God forbid, if they return to Father Troy or either of you or myself. I suppose none of us are safe.

It’s very difficult, I know. What do you think we can do? I don’t have the answers either, Annie explained.

I wanted to ask your permission to speak with someone at the Vatican whom I have recently discovered is familiar with these reptilians.

Oh! Annie said. I mean, not that I am the only person on earth who can see them, but the Vatican?

The Holy Church has specialists in about every field and category you could imagine. As a priest, I have access to a database of specialists around the world within our religious orders. It just so happens the only priest I could find who knows of the existence of what you call ‘reptilians’ is working in the Vatican. I wanted to see if you would be comfortable with me sharing what you have seen and perhaps arrange for you to speak with him to share what you know. I don’t know if he would meet with you, but I thought I would ask ahead of time before I make contact with him. I want to be sure this is okay with you.

That’s wild. I don’t know that I’m worthy to be a source of information for the Vatican. I’m just little ole me, Father.

I can appreciate your apprehension. Annie, God has given you a very special gift. One that is very rare. As a person, you are Annie Mitchell. As a source, you are gifted beyond anything I’ve seen. I believe in helping others. You could also help the Church help others in this matter. Will you at least think it over?

May I speak with Frankie privately for a few minutes, Father? she asked.

Of course. I’ll be out with Kathleen. Come get me when you’re finished.

After the door closed behind Father Zak, Annie turned in her chair to face Frankie.

So, what do you think, Frankie? Should I talk with this priest if he wants to talk with me about reptilians?

That is completely up to you, Annie. You know where I stand on these matters. Make your decision and I will support whatever you decide.

Thank you. This feels like a high-stakes decision, she said as she skimmed over the general facts of what it was Father Zak was asking of her. I think I want to do it. I trust Father Zak, Frankie. I’ve been shown the reptilians for a reason. I don’t know how far this priest wants to go or whether he may want just a question-and-answer session with me or what. I guess I need to know more.

Then that’s what you should tell Father Zak.

Annie called Father Zak back to the office.

Father, I don’t have enough information about what it is you want from me in all this, she said.

Sure. So, at this stage, with your permission, I would like to approach this priest and tell him of your ability to see these creatures. Then I want to question him on such things as how they operate, what are the dangers, what we can do to combat them, should we combat them, that sort of thing. The moment you told me that my senior pastor had a reptilian attachment was the moment my life was changed. It’s such a blessing that Father Troy is free from his attachment now, but what if it happens to him again? I still don’t think he’s even aware it happened. I can’t just sit on my hands and hope people will be okay. I need answers. What if Frankie or Father Troy’s reptilians return? Will they? How frequently? Can they jump from human to human? I can’t ignore what I know now. I have to be equipped for battle if it happens again.

I’m already ahead of you. That’s so beautiful, Father. Yes, I will speak to your person. I only ask that I be allowed to set my own boundaries and when I’ve reached my limit in dealing with this, I want the option to back out. I don’t know what to expect.

I would have it no other way, Annie. I will see that your wishes and protection are at the forefront at all times. I’ll be in touch soon, he said and then stood. Frankie, are you okay with this so far?

I told Annie I trust and support her decision either way.

Thank you, my son. If we can release even one person from the clutches of these beings, the endeavor will have been worth it. I’ll be in touch, Father Zak said and walked Annie and Frankie back to Kathleen’s front office. Congratulations again on your engagement.

Thank you. I’ll wait for your call, Father, Annie said. Father Zak nodded and returned to his office down the back hallway.

We’ll see you later, Kathleen, Annie whispered.

Congratulations again. I can’t think of two finer people to be getting married, Kathleen said with a big smile.

    Chapter 3

Two weeks passed and Annie stared up at the stars through the skylight over her bed. Frankie snored lightly next to her, but she didn’t notice because of the barrage of thoughts that were racing through her head.

She got up, put her robe on and tiptoed downstairs to the living room. The city lights cast a glow through the sheers and throughout the main floor. Annie appreciated how the garage was beneath the house. That set her living room up high enough for a panoramic view. Her purple couch looked black in the dimly lit living room. She sat and took in the beauty of her new view while she meditated to calm her racing thoughts. After she had time to relax, she walked to the windows to see there were no cruise ships docked. She looked down at her street and thought she saw figures standing in the dark. She blinked her eyes a few times and looked again. It still looked to her as if a dozen figures were standing down on the street looking up at her house. She felt goosebumps rise on her body and she gently separated the sheers to focus better. They were still there. Gray-black translucent human-like figures were standing in the dark looking up at her.

Annie? Frankie said with a light nudge. Why are you down here, sweetheart?

Frankie! she screamed. She sat up and looked around to see she had awakened from a dream.

    Hey, I’m sorry.

What time is it? Annie asked as she stood and walked to the windows. She looked down at the street and remembered there was a streetlight, so it would not have been dark on the street like it was in her dream.

It’s 7:40. I have to be in court in an hour. I’ll be off at noon today. Everything okay?

Oh, yes. Absolutely. I had so much on my mind last night that I couldn’t sleep. I guess I dozed off down here.

Annie followed Frankie into the kitchen which had an open counter top that joined with the dining room and living room. She loved being able to see out over the city, even from the kitchen.

I would like for Father Zak to marry us, Annie said while Frankie poured coffees. Would that be okay with you?

It would. He would be my choice.

Really? Can you just imagine? Annie smiled big as she picked up her coffee and closed her eyes imagining the wedding ceremony. There’s no rush. I love being engaged. We can take our time and we’ll know when it’s time to choose a date, right?

That sounds like a good plan. Meanwhile, pretty lady, I have to pour this into a thermos and get to work. The coffee at the office is horrible!

Annie laughed and set her mug down.

I’ll be home at lunchtime. Chicken panini? Frankie asked as he gazed down at Annie.

Chicken panini! Anne smiled back, got up on her tiptoes and kissed Frankie on the lips.

Love you. Have a good morning, he said and pulled on his light jacket.

Annie was loving life as a bride-to-be. She was still getting used to being engaged and wanted to relish in the status. She was in no hurry to marry.

She was combing out her hair after a shower when her phone rang.

    Hello?

Annie, it’s Father Zak. I hope it’s not too early.

    Not at all, Father.

"So, Father Vicenty Pasco is the priest I mentioned in our meeting a couple weeks ago. He is even more interested in meeting with us than I expected. He would like to travel here to Juneau and spend a few days with us. Now, before you have second-thoughts, he has demonstrated to me already that he has a good heart. He is like us; he is looking for any credible accounts from people who believe they have made contact with what you believe to be reptilians. It is his ministry to educate more clergy who will then be able to give aid and support to victims anywhere in the world who suffer with these attachments. This is his calling. If you are still interested in sharing how
