J. Wayne Stillwell is a native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. After serving thirty-four years as a naval officer, he completed a second career as vice president for an R&D company. He is currently an independent consultant and fiction writer. He received his BS in electrical engineering from Purdue University, master’s degree in physics from the Naval Post-Graduate School, and completed the executive development program at Carnegie Mellon University. He has published articles in navy journals and authored his first science fiction book, “Xetonian Trades,” in 2003. A second edition of the same book, “Xetonian Trades I, The Seeding”; “Xetonian Trades, The Augerite Hordes”; “Xetonian Trades III, The Reapers”; his first romance novel, “Ten Months,” and a short human interest story titled “Bus 22” were published in 2013. “Xetonian Trades IV, Infinity’s Gate” was published in 2014. This book is another story about how intelligent life in the Milky Way deals with love, war, and interplanetary intrigue. He and his spouse of forty-six years, Bernadette, have two sons, John and Matthew, and four grandchildren.

AUTHOR’S PREFACE

The first book in the REM Man series, Night Quest, was published in 2016. It is a fast paced chronical about mind control, dream states, and alternate realities. Using a drug provided by aliens from the planet Zector, called Bersilium, Navy Commander Adam Johnson was transformed into an experimental super human.

When he was in Bersilium induced REM sleep, he was in complete control. Whatever he thought would become reality. He could fly, be anywhere instantly, become invisible, put everyone around him in slow motion or run as fast as a thoroughbred horse.

The second book in the REM Man series, REM Man, Operation Vostok, was published in 2018. Adam Johnson is now a special operative for the Director of Homeland Security. He uses his extraordinary abilities to combat evil and keep the world safe. His government handlers use him for missions where national or global security is at risk.

Operation Vostok was an attempt to take over control of the world by a criminal organization called The World Domination Cartel. The cartel was defeated but it almost cost REM Man everything; his life, his children and his spouse.

REM Man II, Galactic Intercept, is the third book in the series. It begins with REM Man at home in Pennsylvania running his father-in-law’s HVAC business. His family was delighted that he was not on a mission but he found himself unhappy and anxious.

The HVAC business was boring and routine. There was also a coolness emanating from his wife Joan that made his heart ache. She had been warning him about her fears and wanted him to resign from his Homeland Security job. This was an enormous conundrum.

One morning his government handler called. That afternoon he was briefed on a new mission. The next morning, REM Man fired up his Harley Davidson and headed south.

All alien dialog has been translated into North American English.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Abygon – Alien planet in the Andromeda Galaxy where the Zectorian Empire defeats Renium forces in a major battle.

Adam Johnson – Retired Naval Engineer and program manager. Involuntarily recruited into the Night Quest project in 2021 as a test subject for chemical brain alteration studies and as a living beta site for validating mind control software and protocols. He is married to the former Joan Simpson and they have two sons. He has super powers when in Bersilium induced REM sleep. The world knows him as REM Man and he currently lives in Pennsylvania.

AGD - Alien Global Defense, AGD for short, is an agency under the Director of Homeland Security. AGD has three divisions; Extraterrestrial Surveillance, International Intelligence and Counter Alien Operations, referred to as A-1, A-2 and A-3 respectively.

Aide – Rank held by Zectorian Technical officers trained in the pacification and colonization of planets. The most important levels, Major and Minor Aide, is given only to technical officers capable of exercising super powers during REM sleep.

Alpha-5 – Call sign for the first of its class Zectorian ship that transported Zectorian Soldiers from their base in the Alpha Centauri star cluster to Earth.

AMWA – Andromeda Milky Way Alliance. Created and chartered by Article 5 of the Strategic agreement for the mutual defense and trade between Earth and the Zectorian Empire.

Bersilium – Rare element found in limited amounts on the planet Zector in the Andromeda Galaxy. Bersilium has the ability to alter intelligent brains in a way that allows reality to be generated and experienced in the sub-conscious brain.

Through a quantum mechanical interaction with the forces of nature, a person with a Bersilium altered brain can generate String Waves allowing themselves to be anywhere and do anything they can imagine while in REM sleep. Similar to Opium based pain killers, Bersilium is addictive.

DEFCON – A state of readiness scale used by the U.S. Military. DEFCON-5 is the normal peace time condition. DEFCON-1 means a state of war exists.

Hebei Wang – Owner of Qian Wang Industries, LLC. North east of Handan City, China.

John Bush – Head of security at the Y-12 National Security Complex, Oakridge, Tennessee.

Della – Registered nurse recruited into the Night Quest syndicate. She discovered their evil intent and befriended REM Man. She married Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Peters. They both work for A-3.

Dusty Buckley – REM Man’s local A-3 handler. He is located in Pittsburgh, PA.

Fighter pilot call signs – Communications nicknames used to identify specific pilots. Examples are Mustang, Duke, Dog One and Viper.

Frank Ford – Served on the President’s National Security Council (NSC) for six years. He helped REM Man defeat the Night Quest syndicate. He won the Presidency as an independent in 2028.

HVAC – Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

INCS Mod-1 – A Zectorian cloaking device that can be controlled by the Bersilium altered brain of any REM capable intelligent life.

Jeb Saunders – FBI analyst who worked with REM Man when he was a young FBI intern and later became a field agent. He helped REM Man expose the Night Quest Syndicate in 2022 and is currently head of the FBI.

Joe Majewski – Facility manager for the Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Peters – Marine officer in command of the detachment sent to assault the Night Quest Operations Center on Syndicate Mountain in 2022. He married Della in 2024 and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2025.

Minor Regulan Brander – Zectorian technical officer in charge of Zector’s version of Manifest Destiny, which is to pacify planets inhabited by intelligent life and then integrate them into the Zectorian empire.

Maximum Sanction – Department of Homeland Security (DHS) license to use any means necessary to achieve mission objectives, including termination of life.

Night Quest Syndicate – Group of rogue doctors, scientists and technicians that conspired with aliens from the planet Zector. The aliens shared brain alteration and control technology with the syndicate for the purpose of developing human super soldiers who could help them take over the Earth. The syndicate created REM Man. It was destroyed in 2021.

Operation Galactic Intercept – The Operational Title given to the global plan for defending Earth against the invading Reniums. Similar to the WW II plan that defined D-Day, called Operation Overlord.

Petroleum Pitch – By product of coal used by the Zectorians as a critical ingredient in the manufacture of a super strong alloy called Quantanium.

Planetary – average distance between planets in most solar systems. One Planetary is roughly equal to 200 million kilometers.

Phillip Dillon – Director, Homeland Security.

Quantanium – Super strong alloy made from Alamide, Iron, Petroleum Pitch and polymers. It is used in the hulls and armor plating of Zectorian war ships.

Regulan – Zectorian equivalent of a U.S. military flag officer.

REM sleep – The deepest phase of sleep and is characterized by Rapid Eye Movement.

Renium – Alien planet in the Andromeda Galaxy, 25,000 light years from Zector. Zector and Renium have been economic, political, and at times, military rivals.

Rizhao, China – Port city on the south eastern China coast where the Zectorians obtained Petroleum Pitch.

String Theory – Theoretical concept in physics where particles are assumed to be a one-dimensional string with essentially no cross section. Similar to particles, strings have vibrational states that can mimic the nuclear weak and strong, electromagnetic and gravitational forces. Some scientists suggest that string theory could be the mathematical construct that brings the Unified Field Theory together that Einstein worked on for decades. Physics based on a "Unified Field’ theory would give intelligent life control of infinite energy.

String wave – Millions of coherent one-dimensional energy strings vibrating at various frequencies. They can be produced by a Bersilium modified brain. Such a brain has control of its host body at the quantum mechanical level and can, through String Waves, create physical effects and realities as varied as dreams themselves.

Tennessee Valley Authority – TVA for short, was created in 1933 to provide power generation, flood control and economic development in the Tennessee valley.

Vallamine -Female Zectorian technical officer with REM Powers. She is Minor Regulon’s mate and deputy.

Xeteon – Senior Renium Space Force leader.

Zector – Home planet of the Zectorian people located in the Andromeda Galaxy. Earth has had to fight off their attempts to take control of Earth twice in the last decade. Earth and Zector became allies to defeat the Reniums.

CHAPTER ONE

*Place: Ligonier, Pennsylvania*

IT WAS EARLY ON a Sunday morning. Mammatus clouds, illuminated by the predawn sun, glowed with a brilliant red and orange hue, admonishing sailors to take warning. Leaves were just starting to change color. Cows bellowed in the distance wanting to be fed and milked while Robins fluttered about, eating worms that had come to the surface during the night.

Adam Johnson, a.k.a. REM Man, was sitting on a wooden porch swing he and his wife Joan had enjoyed since they were first dating. Joan’s father gave the swing to them after they were married. The swing was hung at just the right height so that imperceptible pushes with one leg kept it in motion.

As the swing slowly moved back and forth it emitted a squeak, not a loud, complaining squeak, it was more like the click from a musician’s timer. If you were alone, the sound would lull you into a meditative state. It was a great place to think.

The swing was on the patio and faced away from the house providing a panoramic view of the sunrise and flora in the back yard.

So many memories, he thought as he scanned the yard.

He remembered when he and Joan first started dating, if the night air was not too cold, they would sit on the swing and make out after her parents went to bed.

One time they fell asleep and woke up at 6:00 AM. Adam barely got his father’s car home in time for him to leave for work. He was waiting in the driveway with his lunch bucket when Adam pulled into the driveway. He parked the car and immediately handed the keys to his dad.

Sorry dad, he said.

Cutting it a little close aren’t you.

Joan and I fell asleep.

Uh huh.

His dad was not mad because he liked Joan. Adam took a sip of his now lukewarm coffee and pined for the days when REM Man did not exist. He thought about his next mission, wondered when it would happen and if he would survive it. He had been lucky so far.

He knew in his heart something had to change. Joan’s ultimatum that he resign or she would leave, was driving them apart. There was just too much tension. Their sons sensed it. There was no happiness in the house. He knew that extricating himself from A-3 would be very difficult. A-3 also had the only supply of the Alien drug Bersilium he had become addicted to.

Vibrations from his cell phone disrupted his day dream.

Hello.

Adam, this is Dusty.

Adam didn’t say anything for a few moments. He knew what a call from Dusty meant. Dusty was his government handler and rarely called just to say hello.
