This book is dedicated to my father, David P. Schirra, in spirit, who told me stories as a child of magical lands and creatures, which I still remember to this day.

    Birthday Wishes

Jason and Janie Dorset were bundled up to keep themselves from being hit with pelts of snow. The snow this year was unusually hard and hurt when it hit either of their faces. This year’s snow wasn’t the white, fluffy snow that was fun to play in but was more like hail or hard rain. Janie and Jason had to dress in layers in order to provide enough cushion from the fierce flurry. Jason replied, Hold on! Wait for me; I can barely see my hand in front of my face.

Inside the Dorset house there was
