CHAPTER ONE
1980
From the beginning, I had wanted to start my own school! I come from a family that does best in their own companies. As I was finishing my teaching degree, I told the nuns I was going to start my own school. I was told to get some experience first.
My two best girlfriends were both teachers, although not in Montessori. We began the process together to start our own school. All three of us had jobs, families and children, so we met at night. From the beginning, we divided up the responsibilities with what we could each do.
The first challenge was getting the financing together. None of us had money and we were not asking for our husbands’ help. My husband was against the whole idea! In order to even approach the banks we needed a year’s budget and a written proposal. B.
, one of my partners, began writing it. It was my task to put together the exact costs for all the Montessori equipment for the class. K.
, my other partner, began on the budget. This was a first for all of us!
Finally we were ready to approach the banks. Every one of the loan departments were run by men and every one turned us down. We also learned that we had to come up with some money of our own for the bank to help us. I personally had to ask my brother and my father to help me out, as my husband would not.
The last bank we approached had a woman as head of the financial loan department. She not only agreed to loan us one year
