    SUMMARY

    ‘Demons are marching; entertaining the fallen Devils…’

    ****

    Mystics of the great Vagary Kingdom foretold the rise and reign of a king that descended as a beautiful glow from the heavens. The king held sway, yet the appearances remained deceptive in nature; for centuries he walked the face of earth masked with treachery, but then ultimately the glow that had surrounded him died and was replaced with the birth of true darkness of his heart, to the day he inadvertently dined in hell with the only adversary-death

    Triumph is the bloodline of our fathers yet we forgot the prophecies of the mystics- ‘sovereignty of the prince of darkness is yet an echo, as the portal to the underworld where shadows abide with his dominion will be erroneously ajar.’

    This calamitous day a grim storm has darkened the skies and before the dawn breaks; in the depth of darkness something awakes! For months I was trapped within the dungeons of the underworld, and just as I found my escape back home; the backdoor to the underworld was fortuitously ajar and consequently invigorated a theatre of war that is beyond the eye of man-pelt down hell on earth. All this time I was fighting myself, I didn’t know I was lost; now um dancing through the fire upon the blood of my demons, I’m wide awake in this apocalypse; welcome to the new age…

    FOR MY CHILDREN

    WITH GRATITUDE AND LOVE…

    PROLOGUE

    ‘Since the dawn of age some angels have been destined to fall…’

    Under the dim light of the full moon a vile giant came at me from amongst the wild creatures that had gathered in the battle field. The ancient sword in his hand was almost as twice both my arms put together. The beast must have been waiting all along particularly for me; for he was drawn away from the drums of war-audible in a vast distance-and devoted all his strength and rage towards me the moment he set his eyes on me.

    Of all the nightmares I had endured my entire life this here was the worst; the beast that came for me looked at me almost like he knew everything that I was. The look in his eyes was cold as ice, even in darkness his pale blue eyes flickered in my direction; helplessly I watched as he towered above me with tangible frost in his breath. His skin was of old and was almost rotting and his filthy touch was cold, everything about this beast was arctic; surely I had travelled to the depths of the underworld!

    The legends forgot to foretell that this here will be the end of your bloodline, this night you breathe your last! there was up solute pride in his voice as he ripped through the air with his mighty sword, advancing with great savagery.

    Even in my so proclaimed last moments of life I marvelled at the surrounding that I cast my sight. The shadows that stood above me were way bloodcurdling that I didn’t even begin to imagine the real thing that cast them over me. If this was only a dream I sure was going to die in my nightmares; that frost-giant had his cold grip around my neck as I gasped for breath, lost for words. It hit me as I danced and kicked through the air; raking my nails deep into the arm that held me up against a tree-that this truly was the last of my moments.

    The beast did not budge no matter how hard I dug my nails into him; I watched as his blade sliced through the air aimed for my head. In that jiffy though; I could have sworn I had once held that blade in my arms and had driven it through the heart of a beast that had entitled himself a master of death.

    That, however; did not make sense for I hated blades. I would never in my right mind spend even a minute holding a bread knife. Before the blade was brought down on me I thought I could manipulate the ending of my nightmare. After all it was all a dream…

    Wait! I know nothing about your battles with my bloodline and it doesn’t have to come to this. I beg of you have mercy. Genuinely, I was begging for my life.

    Someone in the real world had forgotten to tell me that when facing your own demons it is worthless to negotiate with them for all they want from me was the taste of my soul.

    I have no mercy for you kid! Your destiny is doomed; your fate has failed you. Now receive your death with honour. The beast roared scornfully upon my face.

    His words were all as dead cold as his breath was upon my face. There was absolutely no remorse in his eerie eyes. The air in my lungs was giving in, almost betraying me. In my dreams I was destined to die; death had called out to me and I was obliged to answer back to him. Regretfully, I shut my eyes and swallowed the last gulp of air that had caught in my throat.

    All my strength was exhausted; only a miracle could pull me out of the den of death. The night was sour with the sounds of the dead screaming to muster my soul; I knew then that this was the end…

    In the silence of the dead night; the hand around my neck released the grip and with a gentle thud I fell to the ground. As I hit the ground I knew I had died for there was no pain in my body. The air that inflated my lungs was abundant; even though I could not tell the taste-whether it was foul or heavenly-all in all I was thankful that that beast ended my life swiftly with such I did not suffer choking in the pool of my blood. There was however the fear to open my eyes and see the after-life! Reluctantly I blinked and with sufficient disappointment I lay in the creepy shadows next to the beast that had sworn to make me meet my maker.

    Plunged deep into his spine was a dagger and within my vicinity was yet another monster that was a twist to the entire nightmare. His physical appearance was much hostile than all the demons that had been mentioned in all the fictions that I re-call, this here was beyond the human eye. His face was unspeakable; the other half was almost human yet the other half was fiend-like. As he shuffled closer I felt a twist of my spine when I saw his limbs! The strength that had betrayed me was instantly restored and with such reflex I pulled a dagger out of the beast that lay next to me and hysterically I was up on my feet…

    Whatever phantom you’re if you come any closer I will put you down! an amazing spirit of brave took hold of me.

    The monster in question however did not budge; his stare was with the one that lay dead at my feet. Without a word he turned his broad back on me and with a whoosh of lightning bolts he vanished before my very eyes. In the death of the night I stood admiring the dagger in my hand and on the other; a sword that almost took my life. Ultimately the genius time-travel project was a success; unfortunately it plunged me into the den of the lost world. Demons on my back, it is an impossible wiggle to crawl out of the depths of the underworld…

    ‘The human mind is capable of anything; choosing to battle with it we face our worst enemy, so choose carefully and know what you’re fighting for; for there is no going back. Through this battle we sometimes close our eyes and pretend everything is alright daydreaming of self-proclaimed paradises but it is never enough as we open our eyes to the tempestuous skies of the mind. Alone we provoke doom…’

    MY NAME IS HARRY PETERSON; THIS IS NEITHER THE BEGINNING NOR THE END OF MY STORY…

    CHAPTER 1

    LONG WALK HOME

    ‘Alone in this boulevard of broken dreams I stumble; the world has been superseded by the underworld; Blood of the curses of old in my eyes and I can’t see, I dance with the monsters-that have painted the revolution red to fit right in the battle-through the night feeling my way through the darkness guided by a beating of a petrified heart as I strive to escape the dark horses and the black dark cloud that diverges above my soul…’

    The creepy sound of a raven woke me, bringing back the cruel memories of all monsters and demons. It all felt hazy and distant; almost like a dream, until I looked at my window were the evil bird stared down into my face. Gradually, it was hypnotising me into the world of darkness. I could swear I felt it through my bones. Before it could drag me deeper into the evil mist, the door to my bedroom swung open without warning and the hypnotism spell was broken.

    In the distance I could hear a squeaky voice, yet my head was spinning. I was in a daze watching the evil bird spread its wings and fly off. Just then I realised I was in bed…

    Good morning, beautiful! that squeaky voice made a beautiful noise.

    What ever happened to knocking? I covered my head with a pillow and then rolled to the other side of the bed in an effort to shake off the sight of ravens and demons without raising an obvious alarm. If I had to go on with my life, I had to at least act like a normal person-yet there was nothing normal anymore.

    Knowing Haile; I know that what she wants she gets, and this time around she wanted me off that bed. Before long she was already on my bed, jumping barefoot at my corner, hence making it difficult to stay in buried into that pillow. It was annoying but I was glad she was there; she helped me wash off the bad memories fast…

    Only yesterday I had walked through the front door and my father had opened fire on me, in what he decreed to be an act of mistaken identity. The last I remember was that I woke in a world that no soul alive today can define…

    For hours I had travelled to the bottomless pit of the underworld and all that had transpired there was agonising and mind taunting. It all felt like I had been gone for many years.

    Out in daze of darkness I saw a world that was controlled by the thoughts of man. Anything there was possible-yet deception was the worst enemy in such realm. Without a strong and steady mind one would never make it back to the real world. Being a warrior I conquered and found my way back; only to find I’d never left…

    Dad, you almost had me there. Playfully, I tried to joke with my father after he almost took my head off with his shotgun.

    Shockingly, the man looked at me almost as if I was far from what he knew as his son. Everyone who was there was without words.

    Call an ambulance, Mother was the one to break the silence.

    However; the words that she spoke did not make any of the awkward moment any simple. In that jiffy; I started inspecting my body from head to toe-checking my vitals yet all was in place. Clearly there was no need for an ambulance to be involved-so I thought. My dad had missed by almost six inches; he had aimed for my head. Clearly I wasn’t in shock. But then I turned to face the large mirror that stood within our living room. I didn’t want to be afraid; but I was dying inside-struggling to breathe!

    It was almost as if something was about to leap out of that mirror and dig its claws into my skin! I stumbled upon the study table that was directly behind; while at it had my hands above my head-yanking at my hair. I was staring in disbelief towards the man in the mirror. What I saw in there was at least a different version of myself. The clothes that I wore seemed as if they had been from the decades before the known world war-or even earlier. Something had gone terribly wrong. It all looked as if I had just loomed from the great past.

    The anxiety and the fear of the hospitals were steadily growing within me-yet that was the least of my fears. Someone had to explain to me why I looked the way I was. When I was just a boy, I had been told my thoughts superseded my age and I had never understood any of those sayings; well that night though-it was all coming back flooding beyond proportion. My head could burst;

    It has been almost six months; and the way you’re dressed it is clear you have not been anywhere near home,

    But mom, I have been away for only a few hours …

    Now that she was saying it; I felt it too. It had been more than just a few hours that I was away from home. Everything that I remembered of the world that I had been to was too much to collect in just hours. The truth was set before me and it was all too much to swallow at once. I refused to believe I had been away for that long. The place that I had been to- no one would believe for I didn’t believe it myself…

    In a distance the ambulance was wailing and my heart was failing! Everyone there was afraid to come anywhere closer to me and that sent me into a great panic. The doctors ultimately arrived. They brought along a police escort-as if that was not enough; they brought along the news cast. Finally, I was going to be on TV-even though this was never the way I had imagined it. I had tried out my project before the big event; the annual High-school science exhibition, and visibly it had worked. But then I had put myself up high in the spotlight; the flame there was too much a blaze. My mind couldn’t contain it all at once. With that mounting pressure, I crumbled to the floor…

    This morning though; I woke to the fresh memories of what I had seen from the world that I was told I had been to for the past six months.

    To add to my troubles-there was yet an anticipation to hear what the doctors had found on me and also to answer to the cops and the news about my adventure or abduction. Haile had picked the right moment to walk into my room. Truly she was an angel.

    Ok…ok um up, what’s wrong with you woman?

    Before she knew it, she was already in my arms and we rolled over the bed. Her high pitched voice was like a siren-a beautiful siren. She screamed playfully with joy.

    Take it outside you two! Mum had walked into my room.

    The moment I stepped outside I just couldn’t get my eyes off her bike. We both have a passion for motorbikes.

    Go clean up and then I will take you out for a spin.

    Ok…where?

    We’ll go to the cemetery.

    Spooky as it sounds, that’s the one place that we got some peace and quiet. Visiting the grave of her twin sister had become a habit on us. I would do anything for Haile-as if she was an angel sent from above to watch over and protect me from the evil one. We have been through a lot together, nothing could separate us. All was well-until I went back to my room and closed that bedroom door behind me. The raven was back at my window. The evil bird was stalking me. Everything I had known to be real was suddenly disconnected.

    I opened my mouth, but no words could come out. I thought what I saw in the lost world was all a dream but now it was all becoming too real. That’s when I realised-I was not ready to face the world of darkness and much unfortunately, the ugly side had followed me home…

    ‘It doesn’t matter how big you are. When evil strikes, surely you will be shaken’

    The walls in my room suddenly seemed to have come alive somehow. They were covered with the blood of the saints. The raven at my window transformed into a beast! I had seen them all, but no words could describe the one that stood before my very eyes in my room.

    Every nerve in my body was numb with what I saw in the mirror. It had transformed into a gateway-a tunnel into darkness. At the far end; something creepy was crawling within-as if it was within my skin- I could feel the presence of evil above my head. Amazingly; I stood strong somehow, I couldn’t be pushed over. I had defeated the devil in his lair; he couldn’t touch me in my own home! For some reason I convinced myself and that built courage and self-confidence to stand bold before the nightmare as it transpired.

    At that very moment I had started to confuse between what was real and not real. Rage and power came flooding within me-but I just couldn’t unleash it yet. I remained too numb in confusion. As the dead whispers began, I decided I had had enough. I took bold steps towards my bedroom door. As I was about to open it, it swung open as if it was with the power of magic. A whole new world appeared before me-beautiful yet stained with that blood of the dead. A giant creature waited with his hands crossed before his fierce chest. It had a body of a man-yet the head of some horned animal; a faun to say! The anticipation was that of war. Even though I trembled to the core of my bones, I was positive that I stood on the winning side.

    If you had been in that situation and had something to believe in; this could have been the moment to call upon such power and hold fast onto it. As of me, I called upon all the angels and their blazing guns and they ignited a fire of courage upon my heart!

    These wounds and scars are too deep! They will never heal. I have come to drag u-along with all the innocent; the future is of my father, my master. Your fate has failed you! His voice sounded like a legion of a death choir. He was a monster with a thousand deafening voices.

    Go to hell! I have let you control and do your will over me for a very long time now. There is no way in hell um coming with you. For the record-I spit on the face of your family. Everything about you is a lie and I am glad I have no fear for you. You could have poisoned me for the rest of my life but then I have found you out. If you take a closer look; you stand in my house, your darkness possesses no hold over me. Shut the door and run along like the little bitch that you are-run back to daddy!

    As If I spoke to a human, I was confident. A demon would have laughed into my face if that’s all I had to say for I spoke like a mortal.

    ‘Demons are way sophisticated and strong will beings-unless one follows them or have something bigger to believe in; they make us all see and hear things that aren’t in anyway true. The best medicine is to ignore them. For if you stand up to them; not only will you lose your mind, you will ultimately lose the ones you love the most.’

    The one that stood before me could have torn me apart and threw my carcass into darkness limb by limb. To my jolt, he shut the door with a vile smile upon his unspeakable face and he was gone. I could have marvelled that I sent away my demons. But an overwhelming feeling of guilt was cast over my soul. Just as I thought it-and was slowly returning to the glimpse of reality; the raven at my window spread its wings. Calling along the screams of death and all evil that surrounded my room as it flew off.

    The next thing that I remember is that I lay on the cold floor; drenched in sweat. I was in panic and was not aware of what had just happened. Automatically, my mind shut out the thoughts of all that had just transpired. All I thought of was Haile. Her beautiful photo was pinned to my mirror, to remind me every day what an angel I have in my life. Against all odds; I would never be hurt by her and similarly, I would never hurt her-or so I thought…

    As I opened my door, I could feel that something was awfully wrong. I had not an idea what it could be. The house was dreadfully quite. In the living-room all eyes were upon me! Everyone was there, except Haile. From what I felt, I knew they all had something to say. And with the look of things, whatever they wanted to say was not pleasant to the ear. I was showered with a chill wondering if I had bubbled out loud to my unseen demons and everyone needed a compact enlightenment of my obscenities.

    OK; break the silence, who died? I said that as a joke, but none found it amusing. I looked stupid as I giggled alone.

    A storm of thoughts had clouded my mind. I was almost drowning as mom pointed out the window. What I saw was heart breaking; Haile was running down the street! I knew then with everything in my blood that the ugly smile of the monster that stood before me was something to do with all this. Something had gone terribly wrong. My dad stopped me before I could run out to her; the light of my heart was ultimately burning low. I had missed home but this I had not anticipated. The empty feeling in my heart was growing with every step that Haile took away from me. I hurt her!

    The air in my lungs was burning me from the inside. It all felt like I had been cast into a blazing furnace. Even though I did not know what and how I had hurt that angel of mine; I was actually broken. However, I didn’t have to struggle much with my thoughts to re-call what I had done. The entire family was on angry mode, waiting to fill me in;

    What more do you want to say to her, don’t you think you have done enough? The sound of the voice of my father was troubled. Not only was he disappointed-he was actually angry!

    Let’s start again dad, what is it that I have done enough of?

    Don’t get me started young man. What a sick joke, go clean up and then go apologise.

    The old man stormed out to the garage and into his-red machine-Chevy impala. He owns the latest Mercedes-Benz C63 and a two wheeled monster; the Harley Davidson-NIGHSTER-. Of all that he owns, he loves the Chevy. He left it running and then came in to give mom a kiss and a hug to my little sisters. The man was clearly old fashioned-he never left home without giving some love to his happy family. On a normal day he would shake my hand and ask me to watch after his family while he was gone. But this day; sadly, I had crossed his darkest path.

    I’ll be back before sun down my love; I got to help Ben with his old bike. As if he had forgotten my errors, he kissed his wife.

    Aren’t you two old for that? One could tell from her cute smile that she was a happy woman.

    I am as strong as a horse babe. Maybe Ben is the one out of shape. When I get back; you young man, for your own good-better you’d have made peace with that little lady!

    Before I had something to say; the red machine bellowed down the street with tires screaming. It always sent a thrill down my spine every time he did that. His driving skill was like that of a young man in his happy days. Everyone who knew that sound knew that that was my old man and it made me so proud to be his son. As of today though; he left me distressed…

    What have I done? I turned to mom who was then calm.

    You know your dad, he’ll come around.

    But ma’, what did I do? As I asked she could tell I was all short of breath; angry for whatever it was that I had done even though I had not an idea what it was yet.

    Poor child; you really don’t know what you have done, that project did something to you I knew it. Come sit here. Her voice was seriously commanding-yet so calm.

    This morning everyone heard you curse Haile out of your life. Whatever she has done; she is a sweet child. She don’t deserve that, especially not from you ma’ boy.

    I was lost for words…

    But ma’ there was a…my room was…it can’t be, could I have…no ma’! Mom you mean me, no, I did what!?

    You’re not making any sense right now sweetheart. Go clean up then explain it to Haile OK? Its OK son, now go on. Let’s go clean your house girls!

    She was holding their hands making their way to the girls’ party room-that’s what my little sisters called their room. My feet felt so heavy; mind burning, it all felt like I’d been hit by a fire truck as it speeds by.

    Who would believe I see monsters? Did I see them or had I daydreamed?

    All these, burnt into my skull-as I made my way up the stairs.

    ‘If one had witnessed evil parade in their lives waiting for the moment to take them down; the last thing that one needs is to see the people that matters the most to them running off fading out of their life.’

    Later that day I got hold of Haile’s bike and started pushing it down the street towards her house. The whole time I was thinking to myself- how on earth I was going to explain it all to her what had happened. At her gate she waited, she had seen me coming;

    Thanks for returning the bike. With arms crossed at her chest; she waited on me to explain exactly what that was that I had done earlier.

    I am sorry…

    Please…just like that? You think what you did would just go away, is this some…

    In your place was a monster! I interrupted and the look in her eyes told me my explanation was not good enough-if be anything it made things from bad to worse!

    Oh; so now I am a monster? After all the times I stood by your side, is this some kind of a sick joke? Because if it is then I don’t think it is so funny, you see me laughing? You humiliated me long enough at your place. Now you have come to rub it in? How dare you show your face just to insult me! What do you really want from me? Her voice had become so high pitched. Never in my life had I seen her so mad-I had really done it. She was hurt.

    For a moment I understood all she said but then gradually; I could see her lips move but in my ears something-that’s not her- was screaming within, in a loud shrill! The raven was in a distance-approaching so slowly; as if time had stopped. I could sense evil suddenly surrounding us and the world around us spinning faster and out of control-so to speak. As the raven came within reaching distance, everything in that radius faded black…

    Like a roller-coaster ride; my mind was completely blank without a single thought. But then when I finally managed to open my eyes again; there was a slight beep sound. There was light-the light was too bright almost blinding me. For a moment I thought I had died and gone to heaven. But it was only an uninhabited thought, for I then I realised I lay on a hospital bed. With delight, my heart almost stopped as my eyes met hers… Those eyes had tears in them but still remained so cute;

    I am so sorry. Then those tears started rolling down Haile’s cheeks as she held my hand pretty tight.

    I lay there ignoring the fact that I was all messed up-more so that I lay in hospital. In truth; I was happy where I was, under the care of an angel.

    You look so cute when you’re sad;

    Stop it already! She managed to smile briefly, as she wiped away her tears.

    What happened, how did I get here? I struggled to sit up and there it struck me; I was in tremendous pain the kind that something had ripped my spine right out of my back.

    Your mom…well I guess you hit your head pretty hard as you fell. You started talking about death, monsters-creepy! So I called your mom and we brought you here.

    "Where is she now?’ Suddenly, it was hard to swallow.

    I was getting worried and it was a just instinct; for that question, changed the expression on her face. I knew then that what had happened was more than just a fall, it was all trouble. Haile told me I went on talking about evil being on earth and how innocent blood would be shed. She painted a picture that I knew well all too well-only she was not supposed to have heard about it. At least not like that…

    "They made the brain scan, the doctor thinks you’re nuts and they plan to take you to the psychiatric ward."

    NO!

    I am sorry but it’s true. She started to sob again.

    ‘Nature of the mortals; if something cannot be explained scientifically, they are hasty to regard even one of their own as a retard…’

    Before she could tell me more, mom walked in with dad and the doctors. Haile was made to leave my side. Papers were signed, handing me over. When it was all done my scrutiny was with the nurse; her eyes, something in them spelled evil-not just metaphorically but in an actual fact. Her eyes for a moment lit up red. She wore an evil grin on her face. The doctor though, he remained calm and professional. And that was only seconds before I saw it; he had a tattoo so familiar at the back of his neck-an angel with a broken wing- so did the evil nurse!

    Back in the lost world the lost souls had the same peculiar tattoo!!!

    I tried to jump out of bed but the lady nurse had seen my intentions, she put me down with her hand pressed against my chest. She had gigantic strength for a lady her size. Conversely; her greatest power was with her sweet, deceitful voice…

    Hush now sweetheart, mom will be gone for a little while. And I’ll take good care of you; there is nothing to worry about. She won’t even recognise you when she returns.

    To the ear of men, that sounded just about right-like I was in absolute good hands. But what she was actually saying was that she would destroy me and toss whatever remains of me where no one would ever dare to look. The anticipation was that; even if I could be found no one would ever recognise it was me. My parents had no idea what they had done! They signed me into the hands of the patriots-the death messengers- to deliver me directly into the deep, darkest pit of the underworld. I saw mom and dad leave without saying their goodbyes. Knowing what that nurse was capable of, it was just.

    It was better to let them go, than to watch them die at the hands of a freak that the dark side had sent to fetch me. I knew way too many secrets of the vice. They wanted me, dead or alive. Out through the window, Haile watched on as the nurse pushed me to the ward on a hospital bed. Her pretty eyes were clouded with tears that she tried to hold back. There was not a thing that Haile could have done to help.

    You can visit him anytime sweetheart but do it soon while he still remembers you. Trust me he won’t stay same for long. For once she was honest.

    The ward was chaotic-a true definition of hell on earth. It was just like in the movies where an inmate is brought into the maximum prison facility. Everyone wanted to get their hands on me. And there was no one that knew what was in those demented minds. What would they do if a chance prevailed?

    Settle down at once, he is the master piece he belongs to the master you hear. Should anyone of you touch him I’ll slit your throat right here…we clear? Make no mistake about it! The vile nurse set them straight. I must have been of prominent importance that the retards for once heard and responded in accordance with the command. Or they simply feared her as much as I did. I was set free; and like in any wild territory, this ground had a rule of the quarters…

    ‘Do whatever you want; but just don’t get caught up in your own mess.’

    Like a lost puppy; I was out of place in a different dominion. The sun was already down and I knew I had to be out before sunrise, else suffer the mercilessness of Zuus.

    The place was maximally secured; there was no way out and no doctor could help me out. With the look of things, the people that brought me here were the only sane beings as far I as I could re-call. If there was a way out of here, they must have known it. Secretly; I followed them to a dark room, the only room in the ward without a lock on its door-yet no one went through except those two.

    I was brave! As I pushed the door open; everyone crawled back in terror, as if they saw something that was not visible to my eyes. Every nerve in my body seemed to shut down, my knees got weak because I feared the unknown. There was great demonstration of evil within that dark room.

    I felt my hair shrink into my skull-I have never felt so afraid. Just as I stood there frozen; the lady nurse emerged from the darkness towards me. Something about her was different-totally inhuman. With a single blow to the head she sent me flying a few feet from where she stood, back into the light yet she remained in darkness.

    Just because you belong to the don doesn’t mean you get special treatment of any kind you hear! You’ll be like the rest of them soon enough. So stop pissing me off; sit tight and don’t let me come out here again! She was a true demon!

    The door to the dark room shut again and I was left on the floor gasping for breath- in shock! The shock that I was into had nothing to do with the dark; it was all for the evil portrayed by the nurse. He-she; her voice had changed. It all sounded as if an old man and a vibrant woman spoke at once through the same body. Her breath was with a stench of blood. I knew then, I seriously needed to escape before sunrise-else I’d be dead.

    What I saw that night if presented to anyone; even a blind man would open their eyes and run for their dear life. Awkwardly, everyone just stared at me as if nothing had happened. Everyone was minding their business. Everyone-but one filthy man standing at the corner that leads to the front door!

    The madcap held his stare on me without even blinking, not once! With the look in his eyes, I was almost convinced and could have sworn to it that we were both on the same page. If only it wasn’t a thought in my mind. But anyhow, I had to take a chance. I made an approach hoping he was well-balanced.

    The end is here; it is a message to us all, be afraid-be very afraid! Was that his way of saying ‘hello’? It broke my spirit for he was insane after all.

    There is nothing you can help me with so turn your ugly stare from my face or I’ll break your teeth down your throat! Truly, I was agitated.

    Break them all you want but I’ve seen worse! Get your act together and when you’re ready to put down your rage follow my lead. We don’t have time; we’ve to get out of this place fast! The man looked the part, perfected the act but what he just said…that didn’t sound insane!

    In fact it sounded like sweet music to my ears. The best music I had heard the whole day. Even in bafflement, hope returned to me;

    I see you have hundreds of questions if not a thousand. Hi; my name is Smith. Now let’s move! What Smith do you do likewise; should Smith die tonight go home-JASONVILLE STREET HOUSE 402- tell my little girl to burn the diary. Blend and be cool, and remember the Smith way! He regarded himself as a third person, was he insane?

    I followed him-yet too reluctant. I couldn’t tell if I was falling into a trap or even something bigger; the whole day had been impractical after all. The Smith way was awfully ridiculous; we had to wet our pants. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse; Smith provoked some other lunatic to sink their teeth into his left arm until he actually bled.

    Perfect, blood is the key to all this! There was a preposterous grin on his face. The man was amused that he bled.

    I began to feel stupid; had I followed a plan of a lunatic. Had I been fooled by a hare-brained? Not fully aware and while with loss of hope, I failed to see Smith as he came over me with much aggression. The man knocked me to the floor;

    It’s time! It’s time!

    He was soaking my hair with his own blood. This plan was a fail, he clearly had no plans and in a way he wasted my time to try finding my way out. With mammoth rage I retaliated-and it all got ugly! The guard at the front door came in just in time;

    Make sure they change those filthy clothes; then take them to see the nurse. We don’t want trouble with the don.

    The orders of the head custodian were clear. We had to be brought back to the ward immediately before midnight-whatever it took. Just as he ordered we changed back into the private clothes that we were brought in with since laundry had not been attended to that hour. I couldn’t connect the entire plan but according to Smith, it was flawless. To see the nurse was a horrifying depression. I felt my own heart explode upon my chest, hoping it wouldn’t be that evil nurse.

    Remember the Smith way, and be cool we’re almost home free! Tediously; Smith whispered. I was annoyed but I still had no choice but to play along. Besides, the man seemed absolutely confident that he would get us out of there. He was my last hope out of that forsaken place and a little faith in his act was much obligatory.

    Sarcastically I put my head down and walked as if I’d been hit by a truck-as if I would fall over and die any minute. It was a true act I recall. The nurse that we met was true! She had no tattoos and boy was she friendly;

    Sweetheart, are you hurt? In the sweetest voice she asked, while at it attempting to gently clean my face. She was doing the best in her ability to avoid hurting me.

    Without warning the deranged Smith held a needle to her neck, and God knows what was in that syringe…

    Be wise; I got enough Phenobarbitals to paralyse your heart right out beautiful. This is what you going to do, you going to give me another coat just as beautiful as yours and bring a wheel chair to push my little friend here to your car. And then take us to ELM STREET; be cool you’ll live-scream you’re dead! There was nothing jokey in his voice; she had to know better!

    She was so nervous that I felt bad for her-either way; I had to get out. Mr Smith became a doctor, and the sweet nurse pushed me right out the front door. I could almost smell my freedom. The guards never suspected a thing because they had always known her to be so innocent. Her Audi-Q5 was much comfort. The security guard at the gate waved at us with a bright smile upon his face; he knew her car therefore he let us pass without any questions asked. For some time we drove in silence until we eventually came to our destination. She was too much in shock-yet relieved that we set her free without any harm. The pretty nurse drove off into the creepy night; she disappeared dangerously fast-in fear!

    Phenobarbital, where did u ever come up with that?

    I just saw that in her papers; the word sounded deadly but I have no idea what that means, I just had water in it. We better get out of here because she probably went to the police. The man was so organised as if he had planned the escape knowing every detail. Ultimately, I felt safe with him and all hope returned to me.

    Tell me, do you know how to ride? His stare was on a big super bike parked in front one apartment.

    Before I could say my mind, he had already made his way towards the bike. I have heard of carjacking but never a bike. The bike was heavy, it was a true beast. We pushed it down the road then he did the magic-and the bike came alive! There was much confusion in my head; thinking to what was happening around me, everything seemed so unreal…

    Hey snap out of it, let’s ride! Smith waved his fingers before my eyes.

    Riding was a hobby so there was not a single problem to get that big bike sailing. It took off with a smooth roar; it was a cool-ride. The clean breeze was kissing my skin gently and I knew then that that was the call of freedom! No one had told me before, but that night I learnt that Mr Smith was a brother to Uncle Ben. There was more to that, but at that hour we had little time and the police was undoubtedly tailing us. Auspiciously, Smith’s daughter met us half way. Her face was flawless and so innocent. She defined true beauty-I was mesmerised!

    For some reason, she knew the escape plan. We ditched the bike just a few miles before we left ELM Street. In the vast distance we could hear the police sirens wailing far behind. Her driving skills were superb
