INTRODUCTION
Charactures and Poetry
Americans as a whole are not, and never have been, a poetic people. Yes, we do have a few exceptions that prove the rule—Dickinson, Poe, Frost. Nonetheless, we are a country steeped in missions of religious and economic freedom, of the corrosive mythologies of Manifest Destiny and hyper-nationalistic Exceptionalism. The legitimation of pursuit
is enshrined in our founding documents.
Thus it is a matter of great consequence to come upon not one, but two, true American poets such as the Characturess and the Writing Caruso, both of whom have cultural roots in inherently poetic communities. Their voices are able to access a primal dimension, unfettered by anthropocentric superficialities.
Sunnie (1942-2002) was a natural born poetess, her works are unpolluted by the academic as epidemic. She was pristine throughout! For reference: www.inbetweenness.com. For his part, the Writing Caruso echoes the voice of a rich, lyrical tradition.
What is required to liberate poetic perception? It begins with a shift from the task-driven attention of the American dream
to the stimulus-driven attention that accesses creativity. This is precisely what these poems manifest.
Because of these poets, if you have never been to the unique environs of San Francisco, this volume will transport you to that fabled City by the Bay—its diverse populace, its nature-infused urban landscape, its alluring ambience. Embrace the pure joy of this literary inclusion!

THE COMIC
There is a person who many have met, someone who doesn’t yet know which, if any, person to be. Lost in the limelight and living on laughter, The Comic keeps re-clothing a soul, one mask to another. Gifted extremes always tightroping the edge of neither, never quite balanced when the pendulum begins its sure-coursed swing. Arising high apex, now back falling blackening abyss, riding mooded shifts momentary escape but living somewhere hidden Inbetween. Into unknown, granted asylum given only to few. Coming full circle and on through barriers, returning to the same new spot over and over again.
Tragic ironic, funny and sad, neither intended. In each is found the same, an unknown person caught in the confusion of Inbetween. Living to work this tension, pushed from side to side, few withstand the constant pull of balanced opposition. Again and again same questions asked, The Comic answers by quick-witted vision, turning the onrushing instant tide. Lost to the limelight like unspoken words, racing around unguided in those who now let them escape, carried away by laughter.
Immediate relief and lightness ensues, the world regains its whirl and rekindled glow. The moment has passed and lights go out, again the unknown person turns and goes. Strolling along streets where other feet step, saved by time and imagined real. The Comic now empty lets down all masks, revealing only another unknown bearing secrets concealed. Quickly the night life
