Sell the girl. Master Amulius says as he takes a sip from his gold-studded goblet of wine. She is no use to us.

Master! Remus, the Master’s good friend argues. She is so young! We can train her to do our bidding! Besides, she is clumsy. Anyone who is not you would kill her at first chance.

As if Amulius hasn’t been trying to kill me ever since I was born, I grit my teeth and stay silent.

Amulius scowls. She is thirteen, Remus. She can take care of herself. Now go.

The Master’s voice is as hard as stone. Remus scrambles off and so do I. If I am caught eavesdropping on the Master, then I will be punished beyond means.

I tiptoe to the door and slip out silently. I run all the way to the courtyard and
