    Preface

    Country Cemetery

Stopping by a country cemetery on a beautiful spring day,

though I don’t know a soul, there is a comfort here.

Yes, I could rest peacefully beneath this aged oak,

while hawks lazily circle blue sky.

"In this world of ours the sparrow

must live like a hawk if he is

    to fly at all."

    Hayao Miyazaki

    So cold & hungry –

    birds at my feeders

    under hawk’s gaze…

    Pruning the bonsai –

    classical music

    playing on the radio…

    As if to prolong

    the summer – cicada’s

    shrill song…

    Some arrive,

    some go – Canton

    train station.

    Growing older –

    how bitter

    winter wind.

    Above winter garden,

    hummingbird passes

    without pausing…

    Low tide –

    so many clams

    on the rocky beach!

    Light snow falling –

    long line of vehicles

    at the latte stand.

    Grinning from

    the ancient Mayan wall –

    Toltec skulls.

    There goes dragonfly

    trying to

    outfly summer…

    After the rains,

    farmer’s winter fields –

    flooded.

    Crocus & tulips

    have broken ground – snow

    in the forecast.

    President’s Day –

    basketball on the elementary school

    playground.

    Butterfly’s memories –

    mostly

    of summer meadows.

    All winter –

    rising Snohomish River

    gathering rain.

    Spring afternoon –

    rain pounding grandpa’s

    wooden outhouse.

    Rainy day –

no one has put their garbage can

    out yet.

    Sitting in jacuzzi –

    hardening egg,

    or softening potato?

    Doping in the

tour de France, but now –

    the Iditarod?

    Storm approaching –

    but golfers

    are taking their time.

    Body & mind

    declining – she turns

    to her soul.

    Late winter –

    woodpecker hammering on the gutter

    for a mate.

    When gardening –

    she carries peanuts

    for jays & squirrels.

    Eighteen days

in the jungles of Belize –

    dysentery.

    Everywhere I go –

    such

    happy dogs!

    Getting older,

still – I challenge my body

    every day.

    Yes, yes,

    I know – life

    is change.

    Beginning to hail –

    girl covers her head,

    dashes into Walgreens.

    Winter breeze –

    seabirds riding

    the frothy waves…

    First date –

    he attempts to swallow

    the butterflies.

    Gray heron

    may appear to be napping,

    but – he knows.

    Late at night –

    how silent

    this old house.

    Dusk –

    the ancient canyon filled

    with cicada’s song…

    Winter –

further & further into koi pond

    sinks full moon.

    His old war sword –

    a stake

    in the garden.

    Spring,

    but – last autumn’s leaves

    clogging gutter.

    Into babbling brook,

    he tosses
