The Conquest of Zumarce - Adrienne Kristy Lott
CHAPTER 1
The Land and the
Inhabitants of Zumarce
T he land of Zumarce is a beautiful place to behold, but it is also a terrifying place. People are afraid of the Zumarcians who live there, but they are—for some odd reason—drawn to it. This place is purple inside and out. Everything is some shade of purple, which is very strange.
The Zumarcians are nonhuman creatures. They are purple in color, and even their eyes are purple. They are human in size but definitely not human in appearance. They have round eyes, a breathing apparatus where a human’s chest would be, and hard winglike protrusions where arms would be on a human. They have a long, thick, heavy, hideous-looking tail covered in stringy feathers of all shades of purple. Where a human’s head would be, there is a mouth instead—a fleshy, beaklike mouth with sharp, jagged teeth. Their favorite food is humans—when they can catch them.
Sometimes they will eat their own offspring—or each other even! They walk rather clumsily, and they can fly, in a way, at a low level, never reaching a very high altitude. Their flight allows them only to get in and out of the domes and across the dungeon pits that are located just inside of Zumarce.
The dungeon pits are full of odd creatures. They look like snakes joined at the center, or like an octopus. Slithrums they’re called, and they are deadly, slimy, and unbearably malodorous. They make horrible, deep growling and rattling sounds that frighten anyone or anything. The dungeon pits are meant to capture and kill any humans who try to cross them in an attempt to get to their palace.
The Zumarcians’ low flight will take them onto their rooftops and into the entrance of the center dome, where their ruler, Luminar, lives. These creatures have not been known to go outside of their kingdom walls—not even to hunt for food. They know that humans will come to them, because humans will try anything to get into this unusual place and all the way to the center dome. The reason humans make numerous attempts to get into Zumarce is that the Zumarcians possess a large, egg-shaped gem called the borealis stone. They keep it in a special glass display where it is guarded at all times by furry purple soldiers. The Zumarcians worship this stone because it has unique magical powers. The bearer of the stone will have an infinite life free from pain or illness, and all the inhabitants of Zumarce benefit from its magic as long as the one who possesses it chooses to share its power with them. This is why they won’t leave their compound—because as long as they’re inside, they are protected by the powers of the stone.
The king is rarely seen. He lives in the center structure, where the stone is kept. His name is Luminar because he has lights down his back that make him different from the others. These lights are very bright and noticeable. They change hues and shades of purple continually and pulsate. When he gets angry, they get very bright.
The only entrance to the center dome is through the roof. It was designed that way to keep Luminar and the precious stone safe from human intruders. People from a nearby town called Devonshire have tried everything to get the stone, challenging death to get into this horrible place in an attempt to conquer Zumarce and, of course, obtain the magic stone. The Zumarcians view this stone as a god of some kind. They worship the borealis stone and their ruler, who is the only one who can take their lives at any time with good reason.
Whenever humans get inside of the dwellings, they are caught and consumed by the Zumarcians or fall into the dungeon pits to be killed and eaten by the slithrums. Humans rarely get out alive. The residents of Devonshire are always trying to outsmart the Zumarcians. They are constantly coming up with ways to conquer the dreaded land, but that is almost impossible. As long as these freaks of nature possess the borealis stone, they are safe. The object is to get the stone away from them, because then they can be conquered.
The only knowledge the people of Devonshire have about the land of Zumarce and the strange creatures inside is what they have been told by the very few humans who made it in and back out alive—barely, and terrified by what they saw and experienced while inside. They told the others all about it, but no one has ever been able to bring back the stone.
Between the town of Devonshire and Zumarce is a hill. From the top of the hill, people can look over Zumarce below. It looks like rows of domes in a circle; a flat area that serves as a lookout, entrance, and lounge area stands on top of each dome. In the center of this circle of domes is the largest dome—Luminar’s palace.
The inside of this place is strange and frightening, what with the dungeon pits and all. It is elegant but oddly unimaginable. Around the outside is a type of foliage—soft, fluffy stuff that is purple and very poisonous. It is quite a sight to see—unbelievable, and beautiful in a way—and yet it is a place of death, stench, and horror. Humans are captivated by it and go there as if they are being pulled in like moths to a flame, only to be eaten alive.
The real thrill is seeing Zumarce at night. The light show is amazing! Zumarce emits an array of lights in all shades of purple, whirling about in the sky above. It is a sight to behold. The people of Devonshire watch from the top of the hill.
The creepy Zumarcians sit on top of their domes and scratch their hideous tails and make strange sounds: Brrrrrr-ra-tata-tata-tata-huff-huff-huff-huff-whuff!
They are disgusting, and they smell horrible, like something dead and rotting. What awful things!
The people of Devonshire loathe these creatures. They are determined to obtain the borealis stone so that they can destroy the place and the Zumarcians once and for all. So they continue their efforts to conquer it.
CHAPTER 2
Penindown the Great
T he town of Devonshire has a king—Penindown the Great. He is admired, trusted, and loved by his people. He ascended to the throne when his parents and siblings were killed and consumed by the Zumarcians. He has devoted his life to destroying the demons who took his family and many others. He has many good attributes and is a great king. He promises his people that he will someday have possession of the borealis stone and will succeed in conquering Zumarce. His people have faith in him.
Penindown is thirty years old—quite young to be a king. He doesn’t dress as if he is royalty. He is quite earthy, dressing comfortably and naturally. He always wears a neck scarf—silk or lightweight in the summer and wool or knit in the winter. His scarves are his trademark.
He wears his hair slightly long and well kept. He is very good looking. He stays in good physical condition. He believes in taking care of his health. He is not at all mean or pushy like most rulers. In fact, he is almost shy and very kind. He cares about his people. He tries to meet their expectations, and he is genuinely concerned about their welfare.
Because he no longer has family members, he spends a lot of his time with his devoted companion and servant, Totum. Totum is a short, chubby little guy who is very loyal, and he is always trying to please Penindown, whom he idolizes. Totum is always in a hurry to get things done, running on his little legs all the time as he works hard to serve his master. He hardly ever walks. He is a happy guy, always in a pleasant mood, and he is so very amusing. He entertains the king
