Good Night Momma, Good Night Moon

As a grandmother (Nana) to a very bright, very observant six-year-old grandson, I have been awarded the privilege of seeing life again through the eyes of a child. When he was a bit younger, I asked him, Wheres the moon, Jasper?

He would point to the night sky and say, There it is, thus inspiring me to write this short poetic, imaginative bedtime story of what the moon might do after being up all night. Needless to say, he was my attentive critic as I read it to him the first time. I was pleased it met his approval, and I hope it will meet yours too.

As a young girl, I grew up in the rural backwoods of North Carolina and in a cotton mill village of South Carolina, where my maternal grandparents resided. We moved back and forth occasionally. We had very little in the way of entertainment besides building playhouses out of the rocks and playing with cousins in the creek. I discovered early a love for poetry and books that could take me to places I could never imagine going. As a young mother, I began writing poems and decided to submit a few to World of Poetry in the early eighties. I received several honorable mentions and was awarded a Golden Poet Award in 1986 at Marriotts Orlando World Center by World of Poetry editor Eddie-Lou Cole. Actor Vincent Price and author Maya Angelou were speakers at the ceremony. A most memorable event.
