About this ebook

These stories are about animals and humans that may have started in an unhappy way but did have happy endings. They are told with humor, some from the animal's point of view, and hope to inspire a sense of wonder about our furred, feathered, or scaled friends and nature. Some stories are just interesting thoughts on life.

    FOREWORD

Our pets are our constant and devoted companions, always there regardless if we’ve had a bad day or feeling on top of the world. There are countless stories of dogs and cats but here are small vignettes of a special few that are touching and will leave you saying, that’s why I have a pet or I want another one to love.

Cindy Cameron has put in words some of her memories while working with the furry ones. Enjoy these stories as she shares them with you. I’ve enjoyed the many years that we’ve worked together, many happy and sad times, but through it all, we both know that we gave them all our love.

    PREFACE

This book started out as an idea with Loki’s Story from a wonderful day of taking photographs and enjoying the animal and human interactions. The more I thought about these relationships, it made sense to look back at my time at the San Francisco Zoo and the Blue Cross Pet Hospital.

In both cases, these stories are based on true incidents that happened at each location. The other stories are based on incidents that happened as we do have photographs to go along with almost all the stories. Hopefully, they will inspire you and give you food for thought about the relationship between animals, wild or domestic, and the people that care for them.

My hat’s off to all the people at the San Francisco Zoo as well as all those at the Blue Cross Pet Hospital in San Francisco. They are often the unsung heroes of these stories, as well as all the people who care for their pets and try to give them the best life possible.

    LOKI’S STORY*

It was a lovely day in November, in fact, it was the day after Thanksgiving! It was one of those only in San Francisco sort of days … clear, sunny, cool, breezy with the horizon as sharp as a knife. Once again we were at a local gathering place to enjoy the peace and energy of all the life there, feathered, furred, and clothed.

While taking pictures of the ravens gamboling in the air along the cliffs, here comes two good-sized Siberian Huskies. Fortunately, they did chase away all the seagulls hanging around. Did they spook the ravens? Not bloody likely … these wonderful, mysterious black birds continued their air play.

We could hear someone calling for Loki, but he ignored the calls to come back as only a strong-willed canine can. Because of his hanging out near us, we were able to get these wonderful pictures of dog and ravens.

Ever since we started photographing our local ravens, we’ve become fascinated with these marvelous birds and have made a study of them. Humankind has incorporated them into their myths and beliefs.

In American Indian folklore, the raven is thought of as a secret keeper and carries messages and prayers to the spirits. Similarly, in Norse mythology, the god Odin had two ravens that reported to him on human doings. His two ravens were Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory). Ravens have often been associated with wolves and moose. With wolves, some believe that ravens spot prey for them. Since moose are often prey for wolves, ravens have been associated with them as well.

The first picture shows Loki turning around as it looks like the raven, Muninn (Memory) is arriving with news of Jeanne’s passing. Loki, your person is going to be in an accident, but it will be very quick and she feel no pain.

    The Messenger

The second picture shows Muninn delivering the news. Loki thinks Oh no, my person will be gone, she is wonderful to me!

    The Message is Delivered

The third picture is entitled Ancient Allies is referencing the connection between ravens and wolves (husky) with these apparent interdimensional ravens crowding around.
