    FOREWORD

I HAVE KNOWN THE Jones family for many years. I knew and have known the author’s grandfather, The Reverend John Audie Banks Jones and his father, Dr. George A Jones, Sr., and his son, The Reverend Jeremy Jones.

Dr. George A. Jones, Jr., the author, comes from a family of gifted preachers, pastors, and evangelists. So then his background and experiences adequately prepare him to speak with authority on giants. In this book GIANTSLAYER: The Bigger They Come, The Harder They Fall, gives us some examples of the giants he has faced and conquered. He gives us a list of giants we face and uses scripture references and extended results to help us conquer giants in our own lives.

I am honored to have been asked to write the foreword to a book that I find informative and inspiriting. I highly recommend this book, which represents years of earnest attempt on the part of this pastor to share with us thoughts that not simply meander through the mind, but issues that are at the core of the human spirit.

    INTRODUCTION

W OULDN’T IT BE wonderful if we had no giants in our lives? What if we never had any sickness, disappointments, heartaches, rejection, or anything else negative to disturb our minds? If this were true we could sail on into life’s sunset and live happily ever after as it is told in the fairy tale stories. The truth is that life is not designed that way. We live in a world that is infiltrated with giants of many colors, shapes, and sizes. Thus, giants are a universal phenomenon. We as human beings have one substantial thing in common; we all have giants in our lives. Every day we face some type of challenge that troubles our minds. We face situations and circumstances that try us to the core of our being. We face sickness, shortages, failure, betrayal, addictions and many other giants that will be mentioned later in this book.

Numbers 13:32-33 says, And they brought an evil report of the land which had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

This text found in the pages of Holy Writ represents the report of ten of the Israelite spies who searched out the land of Canaan forty days. The gist of the report was they did not believe they could possess the land because they too saw horrifying giants. What a faithless report for the people of God! Although it was a report of the majority, it was a report of doubt and not one of faith. They saw the giants, but they did not see God- the biggest giant of all. Does that sound familiar? Is that not the same mindset many Christians have today when we face the giants of our lives? Notice how they saw themselves-as grasshoppers. The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7, As he thinketh in his heart so is he. Do you see yourself as a grasshopper when you are confronted with the giants of your life? If you do, you have already defeated yourself before a giant can do anything to you.

Only two persons out of the twelve returned with a positive report of faith-Joshua and Caleb.

These two men should be commended for standing firm on their faith in God. They saw the same giants that the other ten spies saw; but they also saw God. Joshua and Caleb focused their eyes on God’s mighty acts of deliverance which they had seen in the past. They remembered how God parted the Red Sea. They remembered how God delivered them out of Egypt. The other ten spies had forgotten so quickly what they had seen God do.

This same type of negative report that was presented by the ten spies is believed and circulated among many Christians today. In many instances, we don’t believe we can have what God says we can have. We don’t believe we can do what God says we can do because we are seeing giants. You have to understand that God is bigger than all giants.

In 1 Samuel chapter 17 the Bible says that David, a puny shepherd boy slew Goliath, a humongous giant, 9 feet tall with a sling and a stone. David was not a skilled warrior. He did not possess sophisticated weapons of warfare; but he exercised his faith in God when he said, You come to me with a sword and a spear; but I come to you in the name of the Lord.

Going in the name of the Lord is one of the major keys to victory. There are some giant slayers today who like David, are exercising their faith and walking on to victory. You too can become a giant slayer if you trust, believe God, and use the weapons he has given you such as: faith, prayer, praise, worship, God’s word, and the name of Jesus.

In the context of this book giants are problems that terrify, intimidate, and threaten your safety and well-being. The aim of this book is to show that you can overcome and defeat the giants of your life through your faith and trust in God. Thus, I will address some common everyday problems and focus on God’s miraculous deliverance. This is the theme of this book. It is my hope and prayer that you will see all your giants fall one by one through your faith in God. The challenge for you is to become a giant slayer.

    HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD?

²⁷Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

    – Jeremiah 32:27

H OW BIG IS your God? This is a challenging question that demands an immediate answer. The question is not, How big is your bank account? The question is not, How big is your job.? The question is not, How big is your sickness? The question is not, How big is your problem? The question is, How big is your God? We are living in a time when our view of God has become cloudy because of the problems and pressures of the day.

God is awesome! He is awesome in character! He is awesome in his works! He is awesome in mercy, grace, and love. He is bigger than any problem. He is bigger than any situation. He is bigger than high blood pressure. God is bigger than diabetes, cancer or any other disease. A popular bumper sticker reads, God is bigger than any problem I have. John Mason in his book entitled, An Enemy Called Average says, Stop every day and look at the size of God!¹

Have you looked at the size of God lately? If you have, then you should not be so nervous. If you have looked at the size of God, you
