About this ebook

Dr. Fink uses the genre of poetry to express his thoughts and feelings about a variety of topics, including travel, war, weather, places, holidays and seasons, friends and family, loves, labors, ills, and body/mind gymnastics. His eclectic collection of poems reminisce about the sailing of Popsicle stick fleets down city streets, pungent odors of Pine Bluffs paper mill drifting into Little Rock, aging body tattoos, and the titillation at the hands of a Thai masseuse.

Louis Fink

Louis M. Fink MD has spent most of the last fifty of his working years on diagnosing diseases. He has worked as a pathologist and teacher at several major medical centers. He has focused on the molecular, cellular, genetic and somatic manifestations of diseases. He has published numerous scientific articles and books and has received accolades for his work. He presently lives in the sunny desert of Las Vegas, far from his Brooklyn childhood of the Dodgers and Coney Island, where he uses poetic verses to contemplate on the how and why of being.

    AUTHOR

    When the wind has blown

    And your seeds have grown.

    When time seems so slow

And you’ve no where to go,

Turn the pages in my book,

Let your eyes have a look.

To touch, to sense, to feel,

To find out what is fake or real.

Some words may warm your heart

And some may not be so smart.

    Naked is me,

Open and bare for you to see.

My loves, my strengths, my hates and hurts,

My wants, my needs, my sins.

    MEMORIES

    Forgotten or never known.

    The moment of our conception.

    Love upon tomorrow’s dawn

Embraces many dark nights long ago.

Firm soft flesh of our youth.

    The fate of yesterday’s tear.

The humor of an untold joke

    Rediscovered or remembered.

The strength of bone and muscle

    Rebuilt after fractures from falls.

Bursts of light from new morning suns.

Beauty in the sunset when the day is done.

Graspings of a newborn baby’s hand.

The sweetness of your kiss last night.

    ARISE

The Morning Mist Rose From The River Valley,

    Shades Of Gray.

Droplets On Flower Petals, Like Crystal Chandeliers

    Reflected The Morning Sun.

Birds Began To Sing Their Songs,

    Nests Alive With Chattering Chicks.

In The Fading Darkness A Rooster Crowed

And The Hens Began To Lay.

Wandering Weary Cats Came Home To Rest

From Chasing Vermin In The Darkness.

    The Blazing Ball Of Sun

    Floated Up From The Horizon

To Burn Away The Night’s Chill.

    My Eyes Blinked Clear

And The Cobwebs Were Torn From My Brain.

    I Stretched And Arose,

    Inhaling The Life Of Day.

    Mornings Energy Flowed,

    The Pulse Of Life Perfused.

    My Vessels Began To Beat.

    JOURNEYS

    Storms blew north

    And the birds flew south.

    Roads ran east

    As rivers ran west.

I know not which way is best.

    Planes fly fast.

    Makes no difference

If you have no place to go.

Stand me up and spin me around,

Show me a map so I can be found.

Give me a compass and a flashlight

To show me the way, day or night.

Cast me an axe to cut down a tree

To build me a boat to cross the sea.

Toss me a rope to scale cliffs of stone

Find me a friend, so that i’m not alone.

    Take us to places unseen,

    To meadows and mountains pristine.

Have us look up and out at a star

So, heaven and earth are not too far,

Teach us to love the place where we are.

    AIRPLANE TRIP

    To lands of different tongues,

    Over untrod mountains and deserts,

    Over waters unsailed, I fly.

So high, where no bird has ever flown.

So fast, seeming to race the sun and moon.

Below the shadows of puffed clouds

Dot the checkerboard landscape of farms.

Often the cotton ball clouds coalese

    Into a giant amorphous pillow

That beckons me to come and lie.

    Mountains with ice and snows

    Are trailposts to rivers

    Bound for salty ocean tides.

    As the plane arrives,

    Through portholed windows I see

First houses and highways, then trees and cars,

Wheels reach down and slap the tarmac.

Reversed engines roar as we taxi

To walk ways with giant proboscises

    Rolling out to
